The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee has a lot of good things going for it. It's comfortable and relatively spacious, and it offers class-leading towing and genuine off-road capability. We also like its well-tuned advanced driving aids that help make driving easier and safer. Where the Grand Cherokee comes up short is value. It doesn't offer as much standard equipment as rivals and is priced well into luxury territory when you check all the boxes.

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Review
Pros
- Diverse powertrain lineup with stout towing capabilities
- Impressive list of standard and optional advanced driver aids
- Better off-road capability than most other midsize SUVs
Cons
- Confusing button layout
- Interior materials look nice in pictures but aren't impressive in person
- Can feel a little ponderous when going around turns
What's new
- The Jeep Grand Cherokee is redesigned for 2022
- It's shorter and has less cargo room than the Jeep Grand Cherokee L
- Comes with an optional 4xe plug-in hybrid powertrain
- Kicks off the fifth Grand Cherokee generation for 2022
Overview

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is fully redesigned for 2022. This is Jeep's midsize SUV that has long offered an appealing mix of upscale features and impressive off-road capabilities. The last few years of the previous model had been getting pretty dated, however, so it's good to finally see a new Grand Cherokee on the market.

Don't confuse it with the similarly named Jeep Grand Cherokee L. That SUV debuted for the 2021 model year and has a third-row seat and can seat up to seven passengers. The Grand Cherokee (sans L), as you might have guessed, isn't as long as the L and only seats five. Otherwise, these two Grand Cherokees have a lot of similarities. The fully overhauled interior features Jeep's latest Uconnect 5 infotainment system as well as a new digital gauge cluster display and an optional supplemental display for the front passenger.
Under the hood are two carryover powertrains — the V6 and V8 — plus a new plug-in hybrid system Jeep calls the 4xe. You can fully charge up the 4xe's hybrid battery and drive what we'd estimate to be about 20-25 miles on all-electric power before the gasoline four-cylinder engine switches on. Frequently recharging can significantly reduce the amount of gas you use. As another bonus, the 4xe generates a maximum of 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque, which is more than the Grand Cherokee's already robust V8.
Overall, the redesigned 2022 Grand Cherokee is a welcome improvement over its long-lived predecessor. But it also might be worth your time to check out rivals such as the off-road-capable Land Rover Defender, classy Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport or even a luxury midsize SUV such as the BMW X5. Check out our test team's Expert Rating below to help you decide.

Good
7.9
out of 10
We drove the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee on our test track and on real roads. Our Edmunds team conducts rigorous independent vehicle testing, driving 500,000 miles a year.
Performance
8/10
How does the Grand Cherokee drive? We tested the Grand Cherokee with its optional V8 engine, which comes with the obvious advantage of extra horsepower. It provides immediate power when you want it, and the Grand Cherokee with the V8 covered 0-60 mph in under 6.5 seconds in our testing. That's easily the quickest in the class thanks to the two extra engine cylinders and smooth and quick-shifting automatic transmission.
The brakes give you confident and easy stopping power, and our test Jeep halted from 60 mph in a short 115 feet. We also like the steering for its light but accurate characteristics. Less impressive is the Grand Cherokee's on-road handling around turns. It's not a clumsy SUV, but its limits on grip and driver enjoyment are below average. As consolation, the Grand Cherokee is champ off-road. Equipping your Jeep with the Quadra-Trac II 4WD system and the adjustable air suspension will make it the most capable midsize SUVs out there.

Comfort
8.5/10
How comfortable is the Grand Cherokee? This is a highlight category for the Grand Cherokee. The front seats are very comfortable, even on long trips, and both the front seats and the rear outboard seats can be equipped with heating and ventilation. The optional air suspension helps create a cushy ride that softens bumps in the road without feeling overly soft and floaty.
Our Grand Cherokee was equipped with the available four-zone climate control. It does a pretty good job of maintaining a set target temperature but didn't quite blow as much air as we had expected it to despite the fans running at max speed. The one area the Grand Cherokee came up short was road noise on the highway, which was a bit too much for an upscale SUV.

Interior
7.5/10
How’s the interior? There's plenty of space in the Grand Cherokee even if it doesn't have the largest cabin in the class. There's comfortable space for passengers up to 6 feet tall in the reclining second row. Unfortunately the Grand Cherokee rides kind of high, and you'll need a decent step up to get in. We also noted poor forward visibility in some instances because of the Grand Cherokee's large front pillars and sideview mirrors. Get the available surround-view camera system to help take much of the guesswork out of parking.
Most of the controls are easy to use, but some of the dials are a bit small, and other buttons are positioned at strange angles. Also, certain angles of sunlight can completely obscure the labels for some of the touch-sensitive controls.

Technology
8.5/10
How’s the tech? The Grand Cherokee has Jeep's latest Uconnect 5 infotainment system. It has crisp graphics, and the available integrated navigation system provides helpful turn-by-turn instructions. We did notice, however, that the screen's upward angle can sometimes catch glare from direct sunlight. Our test vehicle had the 19-speaker McIntosh surround-sound system, and we enjoyed its rich, distortion-free sound.
Smartphone integration comes standard, and along with it a ridiculous number of USB ports (we counted 12 total in our loaded test car). We also like the breadth and function of the Grand Cherokee's suite of advanced driver aids. The adaptive cruise control brakes and accelerates smoothly, for instance, and the lane keeping system works great without too many sharp corrections.

Storage
8/10
How’s the storage? The Grand Cherokee has 37.7 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row of seats, which is average for a midsize SUV. (Volkwagen's Atlas Cross Sport offers 40.3 cubes, for instance.) The rear seats can also split and fold flat for loading large items. The tallish load-in height may be the only hurdle for some people.
Storage for smaller items is ample, with plenty of cupholders and spacious center console bins in the first and second rows. Car seat space in the back is ample. There are two sets of anchors on the outboard seats that are easily accessible behind classy leather flaps.
The Grand Cherokee offers excellent towing capability, easily outdoing rivals with a 6,200-pound maximum capacity with the V6 and 7,200 pounds with the V8.

Fuel Economy
5.5/10
How’s the fuel economy? The Grand Cherokee with 4WD and the V6 engine gets an EPA-estimated 22 mpg combined, which is above average for a midsize SUV. You can also get the Grand Cherokee with the plug-in hybrid powertrain. Our test vehicle came with the V8 engine, however, and that's what we have to score this section for. With the V8 and 4WD, the Grand Cherokee gets an EPA-estimated 17 mpg combined. Our test vehicle returned 17 mpg on our highway-biased standardized evaluation route, which tells us that we wouldn't likely see anything above 17 mpg in our regular driving. So set aside some extra cash for fuel.
Value
6.5/10
Is the Grand Cherokee a good value? The Grand Cherokee occupies a strangely wide position in the market. Entry-level Grand Cherokees are priced competitively, but they aren't as well equipped as many competitors. Then there are fully loaded versions like our test vehicle. It's surprisingly nice inside and has luxury options that aren't offered in the segment, but it's also priced like a luxury vehicle. In either case, it isn't a good matchup. Budget-conscious buyers will likely look for more value than the entry models offer, while luxury shoppers will probably want a luxury brand if they're spending that type of money. Build quality didn't feel quite as solid as we'd expect at this price either. We think the Grand Cherokee could hold appeal if a buyer wants a V8 or something with more off-road cred, but it won't be the majority.
Jeep's warranty is par for the course, offering three years/36,000 miles of basic and five years/60,000 miles of powertrain and roadside assistance coverage.

Wildcard
8/10
Whether it's the imposing exterior design, the available V8 engine or its excellent towing and off-road capabilities, the Grand Cherokee carries Jeep's brand cachet that many have come to covet. It may not be the perfect midsize SUV, but there are few criticisms when it comes to style.
2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee trim level differences
The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee is a midsize SUV that is sold in five trim levels: Laredo, Limited, Trailhawk, Overland and Summit. The trims generally follow a typical ladder structure, with the upper levels adding more features to those on the trim below. The exception is the Trailhawk, which has unique off-road upgrades not found on other models.
Which Grand Cherokee trim does Edmunds recommend?
Picking a Grand Cherokee can be tricky since there are so many different trims and powertrains. For the typical SUV buyer, the Limited trim should work out well. It comes well equipped as-is and can be further upgraded through a variety of optional packages.

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit Reserve 4dr SUV 4WD (3.6L 6cyl 8A)
I had a 2014 Grand Cherokee Overland 4x4 V6 for about 6 years and just purchased a slightly used 2022 Summit Reserve 4x4 V6. Unfortunately the prior owner passed away unexpectedly. I can't believe the diferences in the new generation in both inside as well as how it rides and drives. The new generation air suspension is so much better. It does not have that floaty/boat feeling to it … like it used and is way more planted over bumps and in turns. No more rocking around with almost no head-sway. The semi-adaptive dampers definitely help which I think makes a big difference along with the newer longer wheelbase. Don't expect this to whip into corners and ride on rails as it still is a heavy and bigger SUV, but it handles it weight and size very well. I am riding on the 21" Summit wheels and it still rides smooth on road and off. I have a cabin about two hours away and that area is all gravel roads and rutted/pot holes/sand/mud in many spots. This thing blasts right through it. At first I wasn't sure on the exterior design as I was so used to the 2011 to 2022 WK version. That said I am sold on the new exterior and it a nice modern take on the prior without being drastically different. I was going to get an Overland and test drove one, but they are very hard to find with certain options like the all-around view camera, etc. and then you are priced right into the Summit price range. For me I wanted this GC loaded as I plan to keep for a longtime. I don't regret spending more to get the extra options. I will say I do think the price increase from the WK platform to the WL is a bit steep. This is why I looked for a slightly used one and saved about $8k off MSRP. The interior and options/tech are amazing in the Summit Reserve. I have the black interior with orange stiching and it looks spectacular. The massage seats come in handy on trips north to my cabin and so does the nightvision for all of the deer that run around that area. I am very impressed with overall look and layout of interior and the Reserve package puts leather everywhere in place of plastic. The Mcintosh sound sytem is very good and much better than most car systems. Stays crystal clear and zero distrotion the louder you turn it up while not causing fatigue to your ears. The UConnect is improved and such an easy and quick system to use and navigate around in. I tow and use bike racks, but my towing is limited to about 4000lbs give or take. I couldn't justify the hemi gas mileage and extra cost as I use mine for communting a lot as well and just me in the jeep. Yes the hemi is a little quicker and stronger, but the V6 is plenty adequate for most and I am avg. around 22mpg city and highway driving. I will also say the V6 is a lot more muted in this generation than last and it makes this Jeep very quiet. May have helped that they dropped the engine a lower in the generation vs other. Also lowered beltline so visibility is better too. I am 6'2" and find this Jeep so comfortable overall. I call it the Swiss Army knife as it truly satifies all my needs. I wanted a 5-seater SUV that has enough cargo room, gets decent gas mileage, is quiet and comfortable for four adults, has the luxury inside, drives smooth and rides nice on paved roads yet have off-road capability as we get quiet a bit of snow and I drive on some muddy rutted/gravel roads. A lot of little things too that this Grand Cherokee has like puddle lights, lights in all four outer door pockets, ambient lighting, heads up display, heated and cooled rear seats, memory passenger seat with massage, passenger screen. I could go on and on. Zero regrets and I am very happy with it. I would definately put a GC on the list to drive if you are looking for a decent size five seater suv. With so many models and options you have a wide spread depending on your budget. This is a huge leap ahead in ride quality and interior vs. prior. I do wish like others that they bring some more modern poweplants to the table. The 4xe is an option and my guess is the Turbo inline Hurricane V6 will eventually make it into the GC and the Hemi will be retired. On the flip side both current engines are tried and true along with the smooth shifting 8speed auto. No problems with mine as of date and I will give an update after more miles.
Full of Surprises!!!

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland 4dr SUV (3.6L 6cyl 8A)
Never thought I’d be in a Jeep after my wonderful Explorer experience but it ticked all the right boxes. Was able to get our hands on the 5.7 V8 Hemi and it doesn’t mess around. The interior is mint and the infotainment is easy and very responsive. The McIntosh is incredible and did I mention heated/air cooled massage seats? This is what we were looking for without knowing it … existed. Probably Jeep for life now.
Best. Vehicle. Ever.

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit Reserve 4dr SUV 4WD (3.6L 6cyl 8A)
This is my 4th Grand Cherokee, going all the way back to the beginning of the model in 1994. Have loved them all, but this 2022 Summit Reserve is a whole new world! There are not words for what an amazing vehicle this is! I'm a tech guy, and the technology in this is off the hook. V8 w / 8 speed is amazing, luxury is better than Mercedes and Audi by far, ride, handling is super good. … Edmunds reviewer who said there was road noise must have had the windows down or something, because it is dead quiet! Most quiet car I've ever been in to my knowledge. Expensive? Um, yeah.. but can't take it with you. :-)
New Grand Cherokee is a snazzy pick

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland 4dr SUV 4WD (3.6L 6cyl 8A)
Picked up the new Grand Cherokee Overland and completely enjoy driving it. The technology on the vehicle is about as good as it comes and the layout is fairly intuitive. The vehicle rides well and is comfortable. The extras really make it a special vehicle. The road noise is a bit more than you’d want and look it was pricey, while I got what I paid for it does feel a bit much for a Jeep. … Overall the vehicle strikes a handsome mark and it just feels like a true driving experience.
