Honda's 2023 CR-V has long been a top-selling small SUV for many years. The redesigned 2023 CR-V should continue the trend. It has a smooth ride, some helpful technology features, and ample interior space for passengers and cargo. There's also an available hybrid engine that helps save on gas.

Overview

The Honda CR-V is Honda's compact crossover, and it's been a stalwart in the segment since it was introduced all the way back in 1997. We've regularly recommended the CR-V because it's spacious, great to drive, easy to use, and frugal enough to make sure you don't feel too much pain at the pump. For 2023, the CR-V gets a from-the-ground-up overhaul. A lot is new, from the bodywork to the interior, but it keeps plenty of what makes the CR-V great.

Size matters even in a compact SUV, so it's no surprise that Honda has made this new generation larger than its predecessor. The wheelbase has been stretched 1.6 inches, giving the new CR-V even more rear legroom than before. Cargo capacity is similar to before. Notably, the hybrid version of the CR-V is no longer at a deficit compared to the regular model; they both now offer a substantial maximum of 39.3 cubic feet behind the rear seats or 76.5 cubic feet with the rear seats lowered.
Interestingly, Honda isn't marketing a "CR-V Hybrid" anymore. The CR-V's top trim levels now simply come with the hybrid system as standard. Honda has revised the hybrid this year, and we've found it provides slightly quicker acceleration and better overall road manners. But it can still be noisy at times, and our as-tested real-world fuel economy was underwhelming. The CR-V's regular engine, a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder, continues unchanged.
Overall, we're pleased with how the 2023 CR-V turned out. It's a recommended pick alongside other all-stars such as the value-packed Kia Sportage, stylish Mazda CX-50 and evergreen Toyota RAV4. Check out the Expert Rating below to get our test team's full report on the new CR-V's performance, utility and more.

Great
8.1
out of 10
We drove the 2023 Honda CR-V on our test track and on real roads. Our Edmunds team conducts rigorous independent vehicle testing, driving 500,000 miles a year.
Performance
8.5/10
How does the CR-V drive? The CR-V is no track star, but it feels responsive and composed when compared with other small SUVs. The hybrid Sport Touring model we tested accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in 8.0 seconds. That's typical for the class, and you can expect a similar time for the regular 1.5-liter engine.
The brakes work well in emergency situations and make it easy to stop smoothly. We also like the hybrid system's smooth operation in city driving, though climbing long mountain grades can take a heavy foot. Around corners, the CR-V stays composed and under control. The responsive steering offers enough feedback to give you a good sense of what's happening on the road.

Comfort
8/10
How comfortable is the CR-V? The CR-V rides well. Its suspension is soft without feeling floaty. You will feel bumps and cracks in the pavement, but it does a superb job of recovering quickly and returning to its normally smooth ride without too much intrusion.
The sophisticated theme continues inside. The standard heated front seats feel plush and comfortable, though Honda still doesn't offer a ventilated option. You won't notice much noise from the road; the CR-V is well insulated and feels airtight as you're driving. Our one objection is that the hybrid powertrain can get loud and unpleasant sounding, particularly if you're going up an incline.

Interior
8.5/10
How’s the interior? The inside of the CR-V just makes sense. There is plenty of room in both rows, and large windows give you a sense of openness that we appreciate in a small SUV. All that glass also helps with outward visibility. It's harder to see out of the back, but the CR-V has Honda's wide-angle rearview camera that we really like.
The CR-V has big door openings, and all seats are positioned at the right height for adults to slide right in without much effort. It's also easy to get comfortable — the front-row seats have a lot of adjustability fore and aft, while the rear seatbacks are adjustable for reclining.

Technology
8.5/10
How’s the tech? While a standard 7-inch touchscreen and optional 9-inch touchscreen are not exactly tops in the class, the CR-V has an effective operating system that is responsive to the touch and easy to use. Wireless connectivity for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration is standard. The Sport Touring's integrated navigation system has basic-looking maps but otherwise provides helpful routing and guidance.
The voice recognition system only comes on the top Sport Touring trim and, sadly, isn't as advanced as some competitors. But the advanced driving aids are impressive. Loads of them come standard on all CR-V models, and the main ones — adaptive cruise control and lane-centering steering, in particular — work exceptionally well.

Storage
8/10
How’s the storage? The CR-V has excellent cargo space for a small SUV, measuring 39.3 cubic feet behind the rear seats. While not especially deep, the cargo area has plenty of width and vertical height to help you fit bulky objects. Some great news: Unlike the previous generation, this version of the CR-V offers the same cargo capacity for both hybrid and non-hybrid models. You won't sacrifice storage in the name of better fuel economy.
Unfortunately, Honda did take a step back with interior storage. The previous CR-V had a highly configurable hollowed-out center tunnel that could swallow up large handbags. Now that space has been reduced to a conventional center bin. In the second row, big door openings, easy-to-access attachment anchor points and lots of space make it easy to install child safety seats.

Fuel Economy
7.5/10
How’s the fuel economy? Non-hybrid versions of the 2023 Honda CR-V top out at an EPA-estimated 30 mpg combined. For more fuel savings, the hybrid is rated up to 40 mpg; with all-wheel drive that drops to 37 mpg. The latter is what we tested. On our real-world evaluation route, it averaged a disappointing 33.3 mpg. That said, it's a highway-biased route, and most of its rivals also underperformed in Edmunds' testing. (The Kia Sportage Hybrid got 34.5 mpg, for example.) We saw better fuel economy in day-to-day driving around town where the CR-V can better take advantage of its hybrid powertrain.
Value
7.5/10
Is the CR-V a good value? The CR-V is well put together for its price range. The lack of shakes and rattles indicates solid build quality, and it feels both smooth and quiet on the road. Now, there is a fair bit of hard plastic throughout the cabin, but Honda does well to mask it with soft surfaces and some interesting design elements.
You will pay slightly more for a CR-V than many of its competitors, so if you're looking for a cheap SUV, there are better options. Considering the robust construction we find the pricing agreeable, if not exactly enticing. Warranty coverage is only average for the class, with several rivals going a step further to protect from rust, offer better roadside assistance, or complimentary maintenance.

Wildcard
7.5/10
Crossovers aren't as drab as they used to be designwise, and Honda has gone with a classy yet restrained style that leaves the CR-V looking a bit generic by comparison. This SUV is about blending in, not standing out. Still, the new look definitely brings the CR-V into a more modern era compared to its predecessor.
It can be enjoyable to drive in spurts thanks to responsive controls and solid handling for a crossover. Practicality is first and foremost, however. As a result the CR-V should be a hit for those who shop with an arsenal of Excel spreadsheets by their side. The rest of you should go elsewhere to find inspiration and passion in a small family SUV.

2023 Honda CR-V trim level differences
The 2023 Honda CR-V comes in five available trim levels: LX, EX, Sport, EX-L and Sport Touring. Sport and Sport Touring models get the hybrid powertrain, while the LX, EX and EX-L come with the standard turbocharged gas engine. The first four trims are front-wheel-drive and offer optional all-wheel drive, while the Sport Touring comes with standard AWD.
Which CR-V trim does Edmunds recommend?
We'd put our money on the EX-L trim level. It's the best equipped trim to offer the 1.5-liter turbocharged engine, which we find is better to drive than the hybrid powertrain. For the extra money over the EX, the EX-L gives you leather seats, a better stereo system and, importantly, the larger touchscreen with wireless smartphone connectivity.

2023 Honda CR-V Sport Touring Hybrid 4dr SUV AWD (2.0L 4cyl gas/electric hybrid EVT)
The car is super intuitive. It drives nice. It’s super quiet. I don’t know if that’s normal for all hybrids but I have had a couple people in my car who have told me to “turn it on” while it was running. I also, the first night, didn’t realize I didn’t turn it off when I arrived home since it’s the first keyless car I have had. My last car was a stock 2013 Hyundai Sonata so this was a … major improvement for me. There was an offer for SiriusXM but I don’t like that it’s a “free trial” where you have to pay a $2 activation fee. Haven’t driven in snow mode because there’s no snow.
Pros:
-Quiet
-Good gas mileage (drive in Econ mode and use the regenerative braking - get an average of 35 MPG so far between city & highway with about 500 miles)
-Headlights are nice and bright
-Automatic wipers work well
-Sport mode is a nice option
-Driver seat is comfortable for me. My partner is disappointed there’s no lumbar support option for the passenger seat though
-You can set the trunk to open to a certain height which is good for parking in a garage
-Motion sensors seem good
-Back up camera has many view options
-Love the black rims
-Wireless charger is nice
Cons:
-The apple CarPlay is a nice feature however after 3 weeks it randomly wouldn’t pick up my phone anymore? I had to factory reset and add my phone back to get it to work. Not super happy about that and hoping it doesn’t happen again. It also wiped all of my saved locations in my map app after connecting it.
-The windshield wipers are bad - I had bugs on there and kept trying to use it and it wasn’t clearing them. -The spray comes from the wiper so it just doesn’t hit and soak the whole windshield. I ended up having to clean my windshield with a rag to get rid of it because it was getting hard to see.
-Windshield wiper fluid is blue. Car is white. Since the fluid sprays from the wipers themselves, it just blows all over the car and leaves blue streaks
-As others have said the horn is sad but this was super minor for me
-I don’t like the dim lit rear view mirror but I know that’s a thing on most newer cars
-Wish there was more storage space in the front - no coin holder, second middle compartment, small space in the doors, no behind driver seat pocket
Exceptionally good car

2023 Honda CR-V Sport Touring Hybrid 4dr SUV AWD (2.0L 4cyl gas/electric hybrid CVT)
I came to this car after years of driving Audis, Volvos, Mercedes and even a Genesis. I chose it after driving a Venza hybrid, and a Sportage plug-in hybrid. The moment I got into the Honda, it was obvious how solid the car felt, in a way the others didn't. It drives beautifully - smooth and quiet. Great visibility. Easy (really easy) to use the driver controls. Everyone seems to want … buttons - why car manufacturers insist on spaceship like controls is beyond me. Adaptive cruise control is even better than in my Volvo, and I always thought Volvo was the best.
Thus far, my MPG are close to what's advertised: between the dealership and home - largely back roads, I got 41 - 43. On a highway drive (67 MPH for 2 hours), I got about 35. In my town, which is tiny and where speed limits generally don't exceed 30, I have gotten as much as 50 (albeit very short term while bopping around town). I drive in B mode, which is also fabulous where the speed limits are low - much easier to drive close to the speed limit without always having to hit the breaks.
I don't care about all of the things reviewers go on about or complain about a car not having (heads up display, pano sunroof, cooled seats) - you may, but I don't miss those things. I've had them in other cars and never used them. The only two features I wish it had was a spare and auto folding mirrors. I have purchased a spare which I will throw in the back (or in a basket on top) when I go on longer road trips. Otherwise, I'm really pleased with it andI highly recommend.

2023 Honda CR-V Sport Touring Hybrid 4dr SUV AWD (2.0L 4cyl gas/electric hybrid CVT)
Honda CRV Hybrid Sport Touring just feels more solid. It feels small compared to my Honda Pilot. (which is exactly want I wanted). Very quiet, very good feel of the road, very good visibility. All the climate buttons are very easy to find and use while driving. Other brands you just have to think a little too much to find a defogger etc. Its quick enough, and I feel safe. The … other brands will have to wait for me a bit longer. Gas 40/34 mph city/highway

2023 Honda CR-V Sport Touring Hybrid 4dr SUV AWD (2.0L 4cyl gas/electric hybrid CVT)
I just purchased the 2023 Sport Touring CR-V as a replacement for my 2007 CR-V which is still running strong. I've been test driving the various competitor cars over the past few years but landed on the Honda. The Honda CR-V has quality construction and performance that can't be understated. The balance of comfort and utility is so well thought out that it establishes the baseline for … all comparisons. The one thing I was worried about was the new hybrid design. I've also been driving a Ford C-Max for the past decade that has a wonderful hybrid experience. I can say that Honda's new hybrid design is even superior. I hit the published EPA numbers on my first long drive. On the tech side, the lane assist, adaptive cruise control, 9-inch central console features and physical buttons, seat positioning memory, generative braking mode gear, are all excellent. Looks like another 15 year car for me.
