2024 BMW X2

From many angles, the 2024 X2 looks more like a high-riding sports car than a commute-friendly and errand-running small SUV. But take note, because the 2024 X2 is a considerable 7.6 inches longer, 0.8 inch wider, and 2.5 inches taller than before. It also rides on a slightly longer wheelbase that, according to BMW's measurements, translates to more legroom for folks seated in the second row.

BMW has a wide roster of fastback-styled SUVs based on more square-shaped mechanical siblings. These pairings include the compact X3 and X4 duo, the midsize X5 and X6, and the subcompact X1 and X2. In all cases, the sportier of the two has added style, but at the expense of rear headroom and luggage space. The fastback variants are also priced higher despite being less accommodating for craniums and cargo. Still, for SUV shoppers interested in a sportier alternative to the potentially pedestrian-feeling X1, a vehicle like the X2 might push the right buttons.

Stepping up to the X2 M35i xDrive brings along a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that offers 312 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. This trims the X2's zero to 60 mph time down to 5.2 seconds. The M35i also has a more strident sound when punching the gas pedal thanks to an M-specific exhaust system. It's this setup that includes racy quad exhaust pipes peeking out from the rear bumper.

At the time of writing, official EPA fuel economy estimates had not been released for either of the two powertrains.

Don't get too fixated on the X2 M35i's increased horsepower. The engine's 295 lb-ft of torque is actually a downgrade of 37 lb-ft compared to the outgoing model, and what's more, the 2024 model's torque thrust comes on at 2,000 rpm, rather than its predecessor's 1,750 rpm. That means the X2 feels more sluggish when pulling away from a stoplight than it did before. There isn't just less power available; it takes longer to get this small SUV up and moving.

The X2 is also heavier than before — some 127 pounds in M35i spec — which makes it more sluggish off the line. No, 5.2 seconds to 60 mph isn't a bad thing, but the old X2 M35i did the same deed in 4.9.

The steering has a decent amount of weight to its action when you dial up Sport mode, but there's a dearth of feedback about what's happening where the rubber meets the road. Happily, the adaptive dampers quell body motions during cornering, and the X2 M35i stops with confidence thanks to large 15.2-inch front and 13-inch rear M Sport Compound discs, a $700 option.

Despite being a full second slower to 60 mph, we bet the X2 xDrive28i — which we have yet to test — will be the better of the bunch. Smaller wheels with cushier tires and standard suspension tuning should prove to be a better fit for this more milquetoast X2.

While the seats themselves are the right amount of cushy and supportive, the X2's city and highway ride are too harsh for its own good. You feel every single pavement imperfection, especially on rougher patches of city streets. There's also quite a bit of road noise that makes its way into the cabin, harshing the overall vibe.

Animal lovers, rejoice, because Veganza faux leather seating is standard and can be had in five color combinations. Optional in the M Sport package is a combination of Veganza and Alcantara upholstery finished in black with blue contrast stitching.

Both the standard and optional sport seats have been redesigned for more support, comfort and adjustability. Overly narrow and somewhat constricting front seats in the outgoing X2 were something we'd noted, so an improvement here is welcome. We also appreciate that, despite the sloping roofline, rear seat headroom isn't in short supply. Neither is cargo volume, which measures in at a maximum of 51.7 cubic feet in capacity with the rear seats folded. That's more than the cargo room afforded by both the outgoing X2 and new X1, as well as the Mercedes-Benz GLA.

It's capable of over-the-air updates and comes standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, satellite radio and navigation. Wireless device charging and a Wi-Fi hotspot are optional. And for the first time, BMW's Driving Assistance Professional is available on the X2. This is a hands-free driving aid that maintains speed and lane positioning on select premapped stretches of divided highway.

The X2 M35i, meanwhile, starts at $52,395 including $995 for destination. And while it does have a higher level of standard equipment, optioning additional safety and premium features brings the price up over $55,000.
