Toyota's engineers could have gone without making the 2022 Corolla hatchback fun, but they have. And we're happy they went to the trouble. When equipped with a six-speed manual transmission, the Corolla is engaging yet remains comfortable and easy to use. Only a smallish cargo space and a mediocre infotainment system hold it back.

2022 Toyota Corolla Hatchback Review
Pros
- Enjoyable handling as well as a smooth ride quality
- Lots of standard advanced driving aids
- Easy to see out of
Cons
- Rivals offer more cargo and cabin space
- Not much rear legroom
What's new
- No significant changes for 2022
- Part of the 12th Corolla generation introduced for 2019
Overview

Affordable, durable and efficient, the Toyota Corolla hatchback is a practical choice in a compact car. But what about style? That's where the rakish 2022 Corolla hatchback comes in, adding some visual sizzle that's absent in the Corolla sedan. Not only that, but with a larger cargo area and folding rear seats, the five-door Corolla hatch supplies more utility than its four-door sedan counterpart.

Toyota makes no substantial changes to the 2022 Corolla hatchback, which faces new competition from within the automaker's own lineup in the form of the all-new Corolla Cross small SUV. But while that model offers elevated ground clearance and ride height, the Corolla hatchback is far more engaging from a driver's perspective. It even offers enthusiasts a six-speed manual transmission.
Hatchbacks provide an excellent combination of flexible interior space in a smaller, manageable exterior package, which can be particularly appealing to urban dwellers. Sadly, hatchbacks are a fading option in today's market. In fact, the 2022 Toyota Corolla hatchback is one of only a few still available. If you think it could be right for you, be sure to check out our Expert Rating below to learn more about the 2022 Corolla hatchback.
Edmunds Expert Rating
edmunds TESTED
by the Edmunds Experts
Average
7.5
out of 10
We drove the 2022 Toyota Corolla Hatchback on our test track and on real roads. Our Edmunds team conducts rigorous independent vehicle testing, driving 500,000 miles a year.
Comfort
8/10
How comfortable is the Corolla Hatchback? The Corolla hatchback strikes a great balance between comfort and composure. It might be a bit soft over freeway undulations, but the body stays well under control. Go with the SE trim and its smaller 16-inch wheels for maximum comfort. The XSE rides a bit rougher because of its bigger wheels and skinnier sidewall tires.
On the open road, you'll appreciate the fairly quiet interior. The front seats will also appeal to a wide variety of drivers and are relatively comfortable even over long journeys. Airflow from the climate control system is effective at both heating and cooling.

Interior
7.5/10
How’s the interior? The Corolla's climate control buttons are a bit crowded and the infotainment buttons are a bit small, but you can figure things out relatively quickly. There's ample access to the front seats thanks to a large door opening, and the seat height makes getting in and out a breeze.
Adjustments can be made quickly, and drivers of varying sizes will be able to get comfortable behind the tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel. The rear should be OK for most passengers, but taller passengers will desire more legroom. As you'd expect from a compact hatchback, there's great visibility in every direction. A low hoodline aids forward visibility, while plenty of side glass makes lane changes stress-free.

Technology
7.5/10
How’s the tech? The Corolla hatch comes standard with automated emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, auto high-beam control and lane keeping assist — an impressive array for a car in this price range. The high-mounted 8-inch touchscreen is visually appealing, but various speed-related lockouts and a lack of a native navigation system make for a frustrating experience. The decent audio system helps, but other cars have much better.
The native voice recognition system is reasonably accurate as long as you follow the tutorial and set up the system to recognize your voice. Thankfully, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration is now included, and the systems are effective voice command work-arounds.

Storage
6/10
How’s the storage? A small, practical hatchback can be a surprisingly versatile car, but a high floor spoils the Corolla's cargo space. Behind the rear seats you get 17.8 cubic feet. But competitors such as the Honda Civic and the Hyundai Elantra GT offer more.
The door pockets and decent cupholders mean there's some room for small items. In front of the shift lever, there's a shelf that looks to be for a phone, but it's not really big enough to hold one. The center console bin is also a bit small and awkward to reach into. For family duty, the Corolla has a decent amount of space for rear-facing child safety seats. The car seat anchors are easily accessible.

Fuel Economy
8/10
How’s the fuel economy? The Corolla hatchback gets an EPA-estimated 31 mpg combined with the six-speed manual transmission or up to a rather impressive 35 mpg with the automatic. Our manual-equipped test car returned 30 mpg on our 115-mile evaluation route. Our total test fuel economy with random driving mixed in was a more lackluster 25.9 mpg, but we believe the EPA estimate should be achievable for most drivers.
Value
7.5/10
Is the Corolla Hatchback a good value? The Corolla hatchback is well built, offers good fuel economy, and comes with a lot of standard safety features. Overall warranty coverage is average, though you do get free scheduled maintenance for services such as oil changes and tire rotations for the first two years/25,000 miles.
Wildcard
8.5/10
"Surprising" might be the best word to describe the Corolla hatchback. Its styling and upscale interior push the Corolla name a little more upmarket. And its compliant ride, fun handling and willing engine make it genuinely fun. All that and an available manual transmission give it real potential as a fun-to-drive hatchback even if it doesn't quite make it into hot-hatch territory.
2022 Toyota Corolla Hatchback trim level differences
The 2022 Toyota Corolla hatchback is available in SE, SE Nightshade and XSE trim levels. A 168-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder is standard, along with a six-speed manual transmission. With the SE and XSE trims, a continuously variable transmission is optional; the CVT comes standard on SE Nightshade models.
Which Corolla Hatchback trim does Edmunds recommend?
Though it's the most expensive version of the Corolla hatchback, we recommend the XSE trim level. It has the sportiest look, and it provides exclusive access to desirable comfort, convenience, infotainment and safety features.

Exceeded my expectation!

2022 Toyota Corolla Hatchback SE Nightshade Edition 4dr Hatchback (2.0L 4cyl CVT)
I needed a second/ commuter car that looks cool and gets great gas mileage. Car is smooth to drive, nice steering feel doesn't have that front wheel drive steering pull in corners, has plenty of go to get out in traffic. Interior is nice and comfortable, infotainment system is good and stereo is better than expected! It needs a subwoofer to fill in sound. I'm getting 30+ in combination … city/hi way driving motor is still breaking in with 600 miles on it. Over all I like it alot! Alot better that my CLA250 for less that half the price.
Great compact car, plenty of comfort and power!

2020 Toyota Corolla Hatchback SE 4dr Hatchback (2.0L 4cyl CVT)
It is a very sporty, cool looking hatchback! The hatchback lid makes the storage area look small, but the lid goes up as you store more supplies in the back! It has remarkable take off power, smooth and zippy! We were surprised at the blastoff feeling from a stopped position. The CVT is smooth and quiet. Nice! AC is cold, cold, COLD! The backup video makes backing up much less stressful … and easier! Plenty of storage in glove compartment and else within the front seat area. The only thing we really don't love is how low it sits to the ground, but that is a small complaint compared to all of the great value of this enjoyable car!
Hybrid mileage at half the price

2022 Toyota Corolla Hatchback SE 4dr Hatchback (2.0L 4cyl 6M)
I tried to buy a Toyota Hybrid, ALL were either pre-sold or were marketed over sticker & most with big profit Dealer add-ons with one purpose, to jack up the price. I stumbled on this slick available Corolla SE Hatchback with sticker milage ratings of 32/41 MPG.
We took it for a test drive, loved it & bought it for sticker price (+ armor coating) a markup dealer add-on.
First off this … is not a "hot Hatch" with a high rev screaming engine, it Is however, a peppy commuter with adequate power AND a tight build with no squeaks or rattles not to mention it's bigger on the inside than the outside. It's got just about everything (other than heated seats) & includes two years of service for very little cash.
We've had it nearly two weeks, in that time we haven't driven our 2023 BMW X2 once. We're averaging near Hybrid 35 MPG at ten to twenty grand less than a Toyota Hybrid
We love it
Great handling

2020 Toyota Corolla Hatchback SE 4dr Hatchback (2.0L 4cyl 6M)
I own the 2020 6 speed manual se and have been driving it for almost a year now. It is slow off the line for a sporty model but the handling around curves is great.
First gear is short and shift distance is long between 1-2, but nothing terrible.
Gas mileage varies between gas type and driving type. Under perfect highway conditions I pulled 45mpg off a tank. 45 mpg!! Driving sporty … will bring that as low as 32 on the highway but can settle as high as 37-38 as long as you are driving below 65-70.
Adaptive cruise control makes long drives a breeze and with a manual you can even downshift and while the car is breaking and stay locked in to the cars automatic controls. The se manual didn’t come with blind spot detection which was a letdown but I purchased some mirrors that help.
Trunk space is tight, but the fact I can routinely pull 40mpg on a highway makes up for it. En-suite entertainment system for Toyota is useless as apple car play and android do everything needed.
Rear leg room is not for adults unless you are a shorter driver. I’m 6’ 2” and I drive just fine.
Interior Stitching is classy and exterior design is sleek and has definite curb appeal. Dual exhaust system makes this car look like high end cars compared to the standard exhaust pipes found in many models.
LDA (lane departure) works well but this car does not have LTA ( lane tracing) which some people may like. I tested a highlander for 3 weeks with LTA and it was a bit much anyways.
Overall my favorite feature of the car is the adaptive cruise control which keeps a very safe distance between cars and can also be adjusted, where the minimal distance, while aggressive, still feels safe enough while driving on the highway.
Great car for a single commuter or a couple with maybe only small kids.
