The Tundra is Toyota's full-size pickup and it's available in two cab styles, three bed lengths, and with rear- or four-wheel drive. Two engine options are available, both turbocharged V6s, one a hybrid with an electric motor sandwiched between its engine and transmission. A 12,000-pound max towing capacity makes it competitive with other full-size pickups, but the Tundra's strength is being a well-built and well-rounded truck with modern tech and safety systems.

The 2025 Tundra is available in a full range of trims from stripped-down work trucks to highly outfitted luxury rigs. But even the base SR trim includes adaptive cruise control as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration. Step up to the Limited trim and you'll get a bunch of nice features, including a big 14-inch touchscreen and heated and ventilated front seats. Top trims, like the off-road-oriented TRD Pro and Capstone, come standard with the high-output hybrid powertrain and four-wheel drive. The TRD Pro's off-road game is strong with a lifted off-road suspension as well as protective skid plates and an electronic locking rear differential.

Competitors to consider

The choices are almost exclusively domestic: Ford's F-150, Chevy and GMC's Silverado and Sierra 1500-series pickups, and Ram's 1500. Each offers differing strengths and we like the F-150 for its broad range of talents, including a low starting price and a strong max towing capacity, exceeding that of the Tundra. Ram's 1500 offers the best ride quality and does the luxury truck thing very well. And the Chevy/GMC twins offer an undeniably fantastic V8. Driving experience

How does the Toyota Tundra drive? The turbocharged 3.4-liter V6 delivers substantial torque even at low rpm, and the 10-speed transmission shifts quickly and smoothly. In our testing, a 4WD Tundra accelerated from 0 to 60 mph 6.6 seconds. That makes for easy merging and passing on the highway. The Tundra also stops shorter than the average distance for a full-size truck, even with rugged off-road tires.

Light and accurate steering helps guide the truck down tight backcountry roads, but be aware that this is a big, long truck. The underbody can easily hang up on seemingly easy obstacles. Our test truck's TRD Off-Road package added a locking rear differential and all-terrain driving modes but didn't appreciably improve off-road capability. Get the TRD Pro if you plan to drive trails.

The Tundra's buttoned-down, jitter-free ride isn't as relaxed as the Ram 1500's, but it's still impressive. Forward visibility is generally good, even with a sizable hood, but the chunky windshield pillars can block your view on two-lane roads. We recommend the optional surround-view camera. The advanced driver aids work pretty well, though the lane keeping system wasn't great at keeping the big Tundra centered between lane markers.

How comfortable is the Toyota Tundra? Like all full-size trucks, the Tundra offers ample room for all passengers, especially in CrewMax configuration. And when equipped with the optional panoramic sunroof and full-width power rear window, the Tundra feels downright airy and spacious.

While the optional 14-inch touchscreen certainly gets your attention, the Tundra's straightforward interior layout and overall ease of use leave a more lasting impression. Gauges and graphics are easy to read at a glance, and the commanding driving position makes piloting the truck much less daunting. The straightforward climate control system is largely set-it-and-forget-it, but we appreciate the large buttons and dials even if some of the labeling can be tough to decipher in bright sunlight.

In-cabin tech

How’s the tech? The Tundra's available 14-inch touchscreen is a highlight. The graphics look crisp, and the various onscreen menus are easy to use. We'd wager some smartphone users might even prefer the native setup to Apple CarPlay or Android Auto (which also come standard) for some features. Our test truck had the upgraded JBL audio system, but we found the sound quality from the standard system was more than adequate.

How’s storage and cargo? The CrewMax four-door's extra space allows for storing plenty of items you'd rather not keep in the bed. Rear underseat storage is generous, as is small-item storage for front passengers. But the Tundra's interior storage isn't as clever or well organized as that of some of its rivals, and we could see the various bins getting messy in a hurry.

Is the Toyota Tundra a good value? The interior is built to a high standard. Gaps are tight, and all the various trim elements lined up precisely. Though our Limited trim test Tundra lacked luxury touches such as wood and chrome you find in other midlevel full-size trucks, the Toyota did not feel the least bit downmarket or utilitarian. Adding to the Tundra's value statement is a competitive pricing structure that usually places it at a slightly lower price point than competitors.

Warranties are about average for the class, with three years/36,000 miles of bumper-to-bumper coverage and five years/60,000 miles for the powertrain. But the Tundra's free maintenance for two years/25,000 miles is a slight step above.

Towing & hauling

How is the towing and hauling? The Tundra's maximum towing and hauling capacities aren't class-leading, but they're good enough for what most owners will want to do: hauling yard and home improvement materials on the weekends, towing dirt bikes or travel trailers, loading the bed with outdoor gear. Serious towers and builders will lock onto the Ford F-150 and Chevrolet Silverado, but the Tundra offers plenty of useful all-around strength. Our test truck, with its standard turbocharged V6 engine and 4WD CrewMax configuration, was rated to tow 11,120 pounds when properly equipped. A reinforced composite bed is standard.

How’s the fuel economy? Fuel economy isn't usually top of mind for most full-size truck buyers, but those interested in the Tundra might want to lower their expectations. The EPA estimates 19 mpg combined for the 4WD Tundra, which is comparable to competitors. But our test truck only managed a disappointing 15.2 mpg on our real-world evaluation route. It didn't fare much better during a weekend fishing trip of mostly open-highway driving, averaging just 16.9 mpg combined. That's worse than what we've observed from testing other full-size trucks.

The Tundra isn't best-in-class for towing, hauling or ride comfort, but there's nothing wrong with having competence and comfort as primary strengths. It's modern but without the flash and obviousness that Ford and Ram use to show you how modern everything is.

The Tundra is easy to drive and easy to live with, especially given its size, and at times it felt as familiar as the smaller Tacoma. The optional 14-inch touchscreen and full-width power rear window give the Tundra some distinctive features and the subdued interior underscores that everything just works. It's difficult to find fault with that level of competence.

There’s plenty to like here, power, room, styling (subjective I know) and it’s quiet. But the build quality is awful, fuel economy is terrible, and what happened to Toyota dependability? I’m not one of the unlucky people who’ve had entire engines grenade, but I’ve still had issues with oil leaks, a Missfire, and a vibration in the driveline. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rear Visibility."
Defect Consequence:: A rearview image that does not display reduces the driver's view behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
