Overview

The Corolla is Toyota's venerable entry-level model and the best-selling automotive nameplate of all time. The hatchback version adds a little extra utility thanks to its more generous cargo hold. We don't expect Toyota to make any changes to the 2026 model because this Corolla generation is nearing the end of its lifespan. A new model could come in 2027, so those looking for an inexpensive small hatch with cutting-edge tech might want to hold out a touch longer.
Edmunds spotlight: Get the fast one
The GR Corolla is the Corolla hatchback's spicy counterpart. When it debuted in 2023, Toyota hadn't sold a fast hatchback in the U.S. in years. The GR was a major palette cleanser. The combination of a 300-horsepower turbocharged three-cylinder and all-wheel drive is a riot that will put a smile on your face and keep you entertained mile after mile. Toyota even added the option for an automatic in 2025, broadening the appeal to drivers who don't want to row their own gears in traffic.
Competitors to consider
The Honda Civic hatch is the Corolla's most obvious rival, but it's a more expensive proposition. That said, it features a nicer interior, more cargo space and an optional hybrid powertrain. We expect all of those things to come to the Corolla when it gets a fresh design, likely for 2027. But right now, the Honda is the more well-rounded car. If you want something with an even more upscale interior and the option of turbocharged power, the Mazda 3 hatch is another great option to consider.
2026 Toyota Corolla Hatchback trim level differences
[Editor's note: The following unofficial information is based on last year's Corolla Hatchback. We expect the 2026 model will have a similar lineup and we'll update this section once we have complete information.] The Toyota Corolla Hatchback is available in three trim levels: SE, Nightshade Edition and XSE. All Corolla Hatchbacks are powered by a 168-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder paired with a continuously variable transmission, or CVT, that drives the front wheels.
Which Corolla Hatchback trim does Edmunds recommend?
Toyota hasn't released official information on the 2026 Corolla Hatchback as of this writing. We'll update our recommendation if anything changes, but based on last year's Corolla Hatchback, we'd opt for the range-topping XSE model. That trim gets you all the features of the SE plus useful extras like blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, heated front seats and a wireless charging pad. It also comes with larger 18-inch wheels and an upgraded audio system from JBL.
