The F-450 is the most capable member of Ford's Super Duty pickup line. While the heavy-duty F-250 and F-350 can also tow heroic loads, the F-450 is for buyers who only tow heroic loads. But the heavy hauling lifestyle has its compromises. It is offered in fewer configurations than the similar F-350: It is only available with dual rear wheels, the regular and crew cabs — no extended SuperCab — the 8-foot bed, and only with the pricey diesel engine. Lesser Super Duties are workhorses, but the F-450 is a commitment and a statement of intent.
Aside from its distinctive commercial-grade 19.5-inch front wheels and wider front axle, the F-450 is nearly indistinguishable from the F-350 with its available dual rear wheels (often abbreviated as DRW). But there are other upgrades hidden from view that are meant to support the F-450's higher capacities. These include larger brakes and a stronger rear axle. All together, the F-450 has an additional 2,000 pounds of towing capacity with either a conventional hitch or a gooseneck (30,000 pounds and 40,000 pounds, respectively) compared to the F-350 DRW.
Competitors to consider
Given the fierce competition in the heavy-duty pickup class, it's a little surprising that there is no 4500-series version of the Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra or Ram. Well, in the case of the Chevy and the Ram there are, but they are chassis-cab trucks meant for commercial use. If you want a regular heavy-duty pickup with a badge that starts with a 4, the Ford is your only choice. Shoppers who don't need ultimate capability at all times may find they are happier with the better-riding F-350, Chevrolet Silverado or GMC Sierra 3500 HD, or Ram 3500.
2026 Ford F-450 Super Duty trim level differences
The 2026 Ford F-450 is a heavy-duty full-size pickup that is offered in five trim levels: XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch and Platinum. XL and XLT buyers can choose from a regular two-door cab or a four-door crew cab, both of which are paired exclusively with an 8-foot bed. The Lariat, King Ranch and Platinum are only available with the crew cab.
Which F-450 Super Duty trim does Edmunds recommend?
Even if you're buying an F-450 strictly as a work tug, we'd recommend the XLT. It also includes the integrated trailer brake controller that is essential for any trailer weighing even half of what this truck can tow, as well as forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking. Otherwise, the Lariat is nicely equipped for the price.
2024 Ford F-450 Super Duty Limited 4dr Crew Cab 4WD DRW (6.7L 8cyl Turbodiesel 10A)
Hands down the best truck on the market, hence the shortage of inventory, and backlog of customer orders. Technology is astounding. The new HUD is fantastic, and the screen is better quality than my previous 2019.
Awesome until the HO engine blew at 8100 miles

2024 Ford F-450 Super Duty Limited 4dr Crew Cab 4WD DRW (6.7L 8cyl Turbodiesel 10A)
Engine blew while towing a 21000lbs 5th wheel down I-40. Large chunks of metal in the oil pan. Ford Roadside Assistance was worthless. Stranded three weeks waiting to get it repaired.
