Edmunds' Expert Review
by the Edmunds Experts
Pros
- Excellent ride and handling characteristics, good low-end pull from 3.8-liter V6, roomy cabin, nifty fold-flat second- and third-row seats.
Cons
- Unimpressive reliability history, low resale value, can't get stability control.
What’s new
This year the Grand Caravan receives a styling refresh and a new Stow 'n Go seating and storage system with fold-flat second- and third-row seats, as well as a hefty base price reduction.
Edmunds says
Pleasant to drive and ride in, the Grand Caravan finally steps up to the plate with fold-flat rear seating, allowing families to get the most out of its expansive interior. Reliability and resale value are still in question, but this Dodge is worth a test-drive if you're shopping for a minivan.

Great Value

2005 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT 4dr Ext Minivan (3.8L 6cyl 4A)
This is a great van. There are minor mechanical issues with this model. If you can work on your own car and get one of these used you can save a ton of money. Honda and Toyota are twice a as much used. Transmissions are solid as long as you use Dodge approved fluid only (ATF +4) and nothing else. A Dodge transmission is $1,700 and a Toyota is $4,700 to replace.

A no hassle & dependable vehicle

2005 Dodge Grand Caravan CV 4dr Ext Minivan (3.3L 6cyl 4A)
This is my second Grand Caravan. My first was about the same as the second; great. I bought this one used with 80,000 miles and have put on 55,000 trouble free miles. Totally dependable, comfortable, and so utilitarian. I can go from hauling 20 bags of concrete to hauling 6 passengers in about 1 minute. I can put the middle seats in the floor and cart 7' tall basketball players … around in comfort! I have never had such a versatile car. A full sheet of sheetrock slides right into the back!
I discovered with this car that the tires are really important. I am running Goodyear Vivas (from Walmart around 75$ each) and they make SUCH a difference. Much quieter, smoother, and good in all types of conditions.

2005 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT 4dr Ext Minivan (3.8L 6cyl 4A)
I bought my Grand Caravan new in 2004. I had already drive 2 other caravans but this one is by far the best. I started at 2000 miles and now have almost 150,000 miles on it. I haven't had to put any money into this van except regular maintenance (brakes, tires, serpentine belt at 100,000 miles etc.). I have taken it on several road trips to Florida, Georgia, and New York and it is very … comfortable. (Even slept overnite in it for camping). Can transport large items and fill it up with camping supplies plus 4 passengers! The mileage was good for a larger vehicle and I am looking for a smaller vehicle only because I don't need a minivan anymore and could use higher gas mileage savings.

A really good minivan

2005 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT 4dr Ext Minivan (3.8L 6cyl 4A)
Just purchased 15 days ago, has had very good care for a 2005. Drivers seat extremely comfortable, great support. Left rear power door not working. Rides and handles well.
UPDATE
Bought it from a dealer about 3 weeks ago, with 163,000 miles. Well maintained, looks like the struts have been replaced, body is much better than most of the same model year. Drivers seat is exceptionally … comfortable, great support, features all work except left middle power door does not work. dealers safety check missed a burnt out high stop light, burnt out left fog light, and had a 24 inch wiper on the tailgate window instead of the correct 16 inch wiper. The sound insulation package makes for a quite ride. It does not have the DVD players, navigation,u connect, CD "changer", center console, seats are cloth, interior is near perfect except headliner is separating in front.
UPDATE
This van is doing good, I actually enjoy driving it more than the 2008 Town and Country, maybe that is because the struts are new and I assume the struts on the 2008 are original. This van does not have the full computer EVIC, I am trying to see if I can vary the length of time the headlights stay on after I shut it off. Waiting for warm weather to repair non working left sliding door, and right sliding door power lock.
.
Quite happy with this van, it's a joy to drive. That't all for now. (3/5/19)
UPDATE
9/19/19
Repaired Left power door, replaced drivers door power window assembly, just replaced battery, have not torn the right middle door apart
yet to repair/replace power lock, not a priority. van continues to perform well. Pleased
3/18/20
Van running fine. I am now hearing a rubbing/clicking noise, may be a brake ware indicator, going to have to check front and rear brake condition.
UPDATE 9/19/20
Left power door fixed, now repairing right rear power lock. van performance is good.
UPDATE 3/21/21
Power sliding doors work well, power door locks working well, changed all interior lights to LED
The van still a pleasure to drive. after each snow once the roads are dry I go to the carwash to DE SALT the van, it has a very good underbody flush, this is crucial to fight the rust.

The Left and power door stopped working about 2 weeks ago, maybe my repair did not hold. I replaced the cowl to windshield rubber gasket about 3 weeks ago, I did not even call the dealer for a price, got one off amazon for a lot less I am sure, this one is larger/thicker, I was having trouble inserting it, I had to remove the cowl, and of course remove the wiper arms, had to buy a puller to do that. The van is giving good service. Still pleased, a joy to drive
9/23/22
All power doors working, all power locks working. Still enjoy it over the T&C, slight leak in power steering fluid, watching that, still pleased!
