The 2025 Audi Q5 Sportback is the sleeker version of the regular Q5 thanks to its sloping roofline. Audi is redesigning both the regular Q5 and the Q5 Sportback, but it's not releasing them until midway through the model year. That means you'll have to figure out whether you're getting the old Sportback or the redesigned one when you're buying a 2025 model. Audi is calling the redesigned Q5 Sportback the "All-new Q5 Sportback."

Although you will likely be happy with the current model's comfortable ride, well-executed tech and nicely appointed interior, you may regret not waiting once you see the overhauled model. Its exterior design isn't a big departure from the current one, but to our eyes, it looks sharper and more dynamic. The Q5 Sportback's interior is also upgraded; it's dominated by huge driver and center touchscreen displays, and a passenger-side touchscreen is optional. The new model will also have Audi's latest tech, including a much-improved infotainment system.

Competitors to consider

There aren't many small luxury SUVs with coupe-like styling. The BMW X4 is based on the previous-generation X3, which is a shame because the redesigned 2025 X3 is a significant improvement over its predecessor. The Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe is the superior rival thanks in part to a cabin that offers a sporty design with high-end materials. You should also consider the Genesis GV70; it doesn't have coupe-like styling but it's very sporty-looking and is one of our favorite small luxury SUVs. How does the Audi Q5 Sportback drive? Our Q5 Sportback accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in 6.3 seconds. That's a respectably quick time for a small luxury SUV with a base engine, but in real-world driving, the engine can feel overworked, and there's a noticeable delay when you press the gas pedal. By contrast, the brake pedal feels good in regular driving, but the Audi stopped in a below-average 129 feet from 60 mph.

Other downsides include overly vague and imprecise steering (you don't get a good feel for the road) and an engine stop-start system that's overly jarring when it fires the engine back up. There are also issues with ride comfort. The suspension sends vibration from the road to your seat, making it unavoidable that you will feel cracks and bumps in the pavement. It's not especially firm or sporty — it's just constantly busy. The lack of a refined ride quality is unusual in luxury SUVs of this caliber, and we expect more from the Q5 Sportback.

The Q5 Sportback does have good grip and poise when you push it hard around turns, but it's the singular bright spot amid otherwise middling performance. The advanced driver aids also performed well.

Comfort

How comfortable is the Audi Q5 Sportback? With the Sportback design, it can be a bit more difficult to get in and out compared to the standard Q5 — especially for tall passengers. But once you're inside, the cabin is spacious whether you're sitting in the front or the back seat or fitting a child seat. We also like the commanding driving position and the Prestige trim's superbly comfortable front sport seats that have heating and ventilation. These front seats are the single most premium item in the cabin.

The cabin controls are relatively simple, including physical climate controls. We're not sure the touchscreen-only tech interface is as user-friendly as the old system that included a center console control knob. Climate control performance was also less than ideal, and while interior noise is hushed, we noted a surprising amount of vibration.

In-cabin tech

How’s the tech? Audi's navigation maps are clear and easy to read, with accurate turn-by-turn directions. Our test vehicle came with a rich Bang & Olufsen stereo system that certainly scores some luxury points.

There were a few hiccups. Though wireless Apple CarPlay smartphone integration comes standard, connection issues forced us to plug in via a USB port. Bluetooth compatibility worked well, and our vehicle included a wireless charging station.

Stack items higher and you'll notice a bigger difference. There are a few tie-down points inside but no underfloor storage. Small-item storage inside the cabin is a bit below average. There's an average-size center console and two small trays that could hold some business cards but not much else.

When so equipped, the Q5 boasts a maximum towing capacity up to 4,400 pounds, which is strong for the class. Only a few competitors can match it.

Build quality is a hallmark of Audi vehicles, and the Q5 Sportback is true to the brand. There are tight-fitting panels throughout the cabin and an interesting mixture of authentic metals, leathers and woods. Some competitors do a better job of wowing you with crystals or flashy styling, but the Q5 Sportback brings a lot to the table.

The Sportback's base price is appealing for a luxury SUV considering you get standard all-wheel drive. But by the time you move up to the Prestige trim, pretty much every rival offers the same impressive set of features. There isn't a whole lot that separates the Audi from the pack at this price. Warranty coverage is average for a luxury car.

I have my 2023 Q5 Sportback four months and it is a disaster. Right from the showroom it began to exhibit problems. Audi service could not fix the MMI so the car acted irrationally.
