Here's one thing to know right away for 2022: There are actually two different Range Rovers on sale. The current Range Rover (the one that is part of the fourth-generation model that debuted in 2013) doesn't see too many changes, though the range of available engines has decreased as both the plug-in hybrid and diesel engine options are no longer offered. But Land Rover has also introduced a fully redesigned Range Rover that's also being sold as a 2022.

Though it has a similar look inside and out, the new Range Rover is fully redesigned. It boasts an improved infotainment system, a new V8 engine and — for the first time in this luxe SUV — a third row of seating. When you're shopping for a 2022 Range Rover, it will be critical to know which generation a dealership is selling and which one you want.

We drove the 2022 Land Rover Range Rover on our test track and on real roads. Our Edmunds team conducts rigorous independent vehicle testing, driving 500,000 miles a year.

Performance

How does the Range Rover drive? We tested the Range Rover SE with the long wheelbase and third-row seating and P400 engine. It's a big SUV, weighing in at nearly 6,000 pounds. In our testing, the SUV reached 60 mph in a remarkable 6.1 seconds. Still, it prefers to be driven leisurely and delivers a comfortable and refined ride. The smooth gear shifts are especially notable.

Should you attempt to take your Range Rover off-road, there are a number of capable tools at your disposal, from two locking differentials to a standout maximum ground clearance of over 11 inches, plus five terrain driving modes including Wade for traversing rivers. Feasibility for aggressive off-roading is debatable given its delicate bodywork, but it's still hard to beat this SUV's capabilities at any price.

Steering and handling are another issue. The Range Rover is tuned for comfort, which in this case means somewhat loose steering and a suspension that allows noticeable body lean under cornering. The brakes are strong, but some three-row luxury SUVs can stop from 60 mph in a shorter distance. On the plus side, all-wheel steering is standard, meaning the rear wheels will turn in the opposite direction of the front wheels to aid your turning capability at low speeds. It's helpful especially when parking.

Comfort

How comfortable is the Range Rover? The Range Rover's standard air suspension is the star of the show. Its ability to provide a luxurious ride over all road surfaces is a delight. Our test vehicle rode on 23-inch wheels, usually a detriment to ride quality and comfort due to the necessary low-profile tires. But the suspension smoothed out nearly all road imperfections.

Also impressive are the optional 24-way power-adjustable front seats, and all three rows enjoy supple cushioning and a supportive structure to keep passengers happy. The Range Rover's comfort is betrayed, however, by its underpowered climate control. And while an airtight cabin eliminated outside noise, we noticed creaks and rattles you don't experience with other luxury marques.

Interior

How’s the interior? The interior of the Range Rover SE is a joy. It's easy to climb in and out of thanks to massive door openings and helpful steps, not to mention an automatically lowering suspension. Neat stuff. Inside it's spacious in the first two rows, but adults will find the third row cramped. The Range Rover also has enormous windows to aid visibility and reduce blind spots. We found it had an excellent driving position that is easily adjustable.

As for drawbacks, it's the same old story for Range Rover veterans. Buttons and controls, as well as commands within the touchscreen, are difficult to find and operate. Sometimes their function is unclear, other times they're buried in numerous menus, and still other times they take two or three tries to work. A familiar issue that deflates our otherwise verdant enthusiasm.

Technology

How’s the tech? The single-most pressing issue we noticed with technology is the voice controls, which simply don't recognize most commands. The Range Rover system handles addresses fine, but it struggles with points of interest and doesn't offer natural language functionality like many rivals.

The tech found elsewhere impresses. Maps and turn-by-turn directions are clear and simple to follow, while you can easily connect wirelessly to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto if you prefer. Another strength is the advanced safety suite featuring a smooth adaptive cruise control system. Of particular note is the lane-centering steering, which can often be annoying in modern cars, but the Range Rover's subtle application felt smooth and helpful.

Storage

8/10

How’s the storage? In a three-row Range Rover like our test vehicle, cargo space is a bit disappointing. It has only 8.7 cubic feet behind the third row, or roughly half the space of a Mercedes GLS, and far less than a Cadillac Escalade or Lincoln Navigator, which have extended-wheelbase versions that dwarf the Range Rover. Fold the third row down and it actually offers more space than the GLS, though, so we give it some leeway.

Towing is a strength, at 7,716 pounds of maximum capacity, which is plenty for most trailers and boats. There is enough space throughout the interior for personal belongings but only just — nothing goes above and beyond what you might find elsewhere. For those with small children, installing car seats is easy because the anchors are easy to find and use.

Fuel Economy

How’s the fuel economy? Such a large, heavy vehicle is significantly aided by its standard mild hybrid system. The Range Rover SE returned 21.3 mpg on our 115-mile evaluation route, right in line with its EPA estimate of 21 mpg combined. This indicates an accurate real-world return, though if your driving includes a majority of city streets you may see this figure suffer. For an SUV of this size, it's commendable fuel economy.

Value

7.5/10

Is the Range Rover a good value? The Range Rover features eye-popping, bombastic features — including a marvelous air suspension and loads of off-road equipment — and is priced accordingly. While that may seem a fair trade for well-heeled buyers, the cost could easily turn more discerning customers away. The sense of luxury, style and exclusivity is there, but questionable interior plastics and consistent on-road creaking lessened our enthusiasm. Land Rover offers coverage of four years/50,000 miles for both the basic warranty as well as drivetrain protection, which is average warranty coverage for the class. That said, this is the industry standard for large luxury SUVs.

Wildcard

8.5/10

The Range Rover isn't exactly fun to drive, but boy oh boy, does it ever have presence. The elegant exterior styling appears to have been carved by a glacier, and its standard air suspension dramatically lowers the vehicle upon your approach. Few vehicles can command attention and admiration on sight like this one. Take our advice and experience it at night when the glowing ambient lights amplify an already palatial experience.

2020 Land Rover Range Rover P400 HSE 4dr SUV 4WD (3.0L 6cyl Twincharger gas/electric mild hybrid 8A)

I was very happy with my 2010 and 2012 Range Rover HSE vehicles, they were beautiful, and drove so smoothly in all 3 areas of acceleration, braking, and steering. I cannot say this about the 2020 Range Rover. Furthermore, basic interior amenities and luxuries are missing in the 2020 model. DRIVE-ABILITY: -Accelerating...In regular drive mode, it shifts 4 times in 4 seconds going from a … stop to less than 20 MPH like when leaving a parking space and just driving down the row. Each shift is noticeable in lack of smoothness and is entirely unnecessary. At this speed, in moments you will be pressing the brake and then it will downshift 4 times, so 4 upshifts and 4 downshifts in 8 seconds, that makes for a miserable experience. Even if you were decelerating and then at 25mph press the gas pedal slightly, it will very abruptly downshift and delay applying acceleration and then almost seemingly to make up for the delay, really aggressively applies acceleration. -Decelerating....when going about 12 mph, letting your foot off the gas and waiting 3 seconds, the car down shifts in such a pronounced way that it feels like the brakes are being pressed. There are two people driving this car - me and the transmission. In summary, apply the acceleration and deceleration issues together and that is what you experience in regular traffic, this car spends way to much time shifting up and down, and it is especially a problem when you are slowing down and then speed up, it gets really confused, and behaves very badly jerking the car. It is not a luxury smooth experience. -Auto engine off. The feature were the car shuts its engine off when you are stopped and have your foot on the brake, and automatically starts the engine back up when you take your foot off the brake pedal is not a smooth or luxurious experience. It is the opposite, the extra rumbling and shaking of the car as the engine goes from 0 rpm to 800 rpm and at the same time engages the transmission is very miserable. Also I've only had the car for 2 months now and two times it failed to auto start and I had to press the ON/OFF button twice to then get it to restart. I guess you can thank the EPA for this, but it is really ruining the smooth luxury experience. HANDLING: -The handling in the 2020 is not as tight as the 2012. In the 2020, under minimal breaking and turning, the body dives and rolls, this is especially noticeable, at low speeds. The 2012 handling was luxurious and smooth with very little body roll. The 2020 feels like it is heavier and higher from the ground, although apparently it weighs less. INTERIOR: -There no longer is a Sunglasses holder, or anywhere like an open exposed cuby to set them. I understand that maybe in re-engineering the roof they didn't have a natural place for it, but you can't just get rid of it, sunglass holders exist cars for a reason. Humans still have eyes and still wear sunglasses while driving cars. -The Glove box won’t stay open, why the heck would it be designed that way? You have two use two hands to hold it open while you try to grab something out of it with your other hand. -There is no visible accessible storage without having to open compartments which makes trying to put an item away or retrieve an item a real chore. Specifically people would have a phone and/or some other small item. Currently you have to put it in a cup holder, or open up compartments to put it somewhere and then you cannot easily access it. -The center console storage is awkward to open and is mostly behind your body, making it incredibly awkward to fully open it and then to place items into it or retrieve items from it. -The center console has a flat shelf under the armrest which is really useless and just becomes another barrier to just getting to the actual deep storage. The flat shelf under the armrest is really useless, it does not even have a lip around it to hold items in. Where do you even put a pen? It seems to have a sticking surface on it, maybe for a phone, but again, it is incredibly awkward to open the arm rest where your elbow is now behind your body, then lift your arm over it, to put a phone in and then close it. Horrible design. -The base of the seats no longer have bolsters on the side - they used to. So now there is nothing to keep you laterally in the seat. You legs will tend to splay outward and you can slide side to side in the seat. -The touch screen is slow to respond. Often you need to make a point to press and hold for a second just to make sure it registered your press. I've contacted Range Rover about this all and they just say that is the way the car is designed and there is nothing wrong with its behaviors. Ugh. The frustrating part is that you don't really notice the problems until you do a lot of braking and accelerating which you only do in rush hour bumper to bumper slow traffic which you don't get to test when at the dealership.

Do not buy any RR with the p400 engine. This is a black-eye to the brand that I was previously loyal to. Land Rover rushes this mild hybrid to the market & after multiple software updates, it’s still a huge disappointment to drive EVERY SINGLE TRIP.
