If you want a Land Rover that can scramble, tow and take the family to town, the 2025 Land Rover Discovery hits the sweet spot. It's smaller and more affordable than the Range Rover, and it has a sleeker, more sophisticated look than its boxy Defender counterpart. The Discovery's party trick is squeezing three rows and seven-passenger seating into a midsize SUV footprint with impressive off-road and towing capability. There's only so much room for a third row in a midsize SUV, though, and the Discovery's rearmost seats are predictably tight and hard to access.

Driving experience

How does it drive? Expect competent but unexciting performance from the Discovery. The six-cylinder engine in our test vehicle propelled it from 0 to 60 mph in 6.7 seconds at our test track, trailing rivals like the Audi Q7. While it doesn't leap off the line, smooth midrange power makes highway passing easy.

The Discovery's dynamics make it feel larger than it is, with ponderous handling and a high center of gravity that causes noticeable body lean in tight turns. The standard air suspension, while generally comfortable, can occasionally create a mildly floaty ride. Visibility is good overall thanks to large windows, though the oversized rear headrests obstruct the rear view, making its advanced camera system particularly useful.

The Discovery includes a solid set of standard driver aids, such as parking sensors, lane keeping assistance and a 360-degree camera system. These features worked reliably without false alerts. However, the overall number of features is below average for the class, and adaptive cruise control, while available, was not included on our test model.

Comfort

How comfortable is it? The Discovery is comfortable overall. The first two rows of seats feature nicely shaped cushions that hold up after hours of driving, even though they don't have much thigh support. The interior is impressively quiet, and the climate control system works well to heat or cool to your liking.

But … there are a lot of buts. Land Rover really needs to hire some people from Toyota and Honda for the next Discovery in hopes of devising better controls and ergonomics. Here's our list: 1) The haptic touch climate panel requires too much of your attention to use while driving; 2) The armrest snaps shut with the speed of a guillotine; 3) It's shockingly difficult to operate the upper glove box; 4) There's also no quick release for moving the second row forward, so third-row passengers are almost entirely dependent on someone else to help them exit; 5) The driver's seat sits up way too high, giving the Discovery an almost bus-like driving position.

In-cabin tech

How’s the tech? The cabin tech centers on an 11.4-inch curved glass touchscreen running Land Rover's Pivi Pro system. The interface is crisp, but the native navigation has quirks. The predictive text algorithm often makes illogical choices, prioritizing Starwood over Starbucks, and destination results can be messy, sometimes listing distant addresses above famous landmarks. Fortunately, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard.

Device support is mixed. The front row gets one USB-A and one USB-C port, while the second row has two USB-C ports and two USB-A inputs. Third-row passengers have no dedicated ports. The standard Meridian sound system is fantastic, delivering clear audio that avoids rattles common in lesser systems.

Storage & cargo

How’s storage and cargo? The Discovery's split cargo door design is quite nice, with the short bottom portion ensuring items won't roll out when you park on an incline. Unfortunately, the amount of cargo room behind the third row is laughable. Even with the second- and third-row seats lowered, the Discovery's cargo space is below average and well off class leaders. Storage for small items is generous, with big door pockets and a sizable bin between the front seats. There's even a small cubby behind the climate panel.

If you plan on towing, know that the Discovery has a higher capacity than most other midsize three-row luxury SUVs. Properly equipped, it's rated to tow up to 8,200 pounds.

Is it a good value? The Discovery is priced appropriately for a midsize luxury SUV. The interior materials are top-notch, and we noted no squeaks or rattles during our test. Even its exterior fit and finish are on par with its closest competitors.

This luxurious three-row sets itself apart by offering plenty of standard equipment, such as its Meridian sound system and 360-degree camera system, which you'd have to pay more for from other brands.

However, this Land Rover's warranty coverage is unremarkable, with bumper-to-bumper and powertrain coverage for four years/50,000 miles. The same goes for roadside assistance. Thankfully, maintenance is included for all-new Land Rovers for five years/60,000 miles, bumping up the brand's previous offerings.

How’s the fuel economy? The Discovery with the turbocharged six-cylinder engine gets an EPA-estimated 19 mpg combined. In our real-world testing, the Discovery returned 21.7 mpg, which is comparable to the test results we got for the Audi Q7 (21 mpg) and BMW X5 (21.5 mpg).

X factor

The ponderous handling saps some of the fun you could have in the Discovery, but if you're plowing straight ahead, this big SUV is perfectly pleasant. The six-cylinder powertrain is a gem even if it doesn't hustle this lug with much urgency. The Discovery is a looker inside and out, and Land Rover has done a great job making this aging SUV feel fresh from behind the wheel.

The Discovery offers plenty of off-road capability, too. Its maximum ground clearance is 11.2 inches, which is quite high for a three-row SUV. It also has multiple traction modes and an available two-speed transfer case to help you navigate rocks and ruts if you have the urge for some adventure.

The 2025 Land Rover Discovery comes in four trim levels: P300S, P300 Dynamic SE, P360 Dynamic SE and the P360 Metropolitan Edition. The P300 trims are powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine (296 horsepower, 295 lb-ft of torque), while the P360 trims get a turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder with a mild hybrid system (355 hp, 369 lb-ft). Which Discovery trim does Edmunds recommend?

The P300S base trim gets our nod as the pick of the portfolio. It's loaded with standard features, including everything from the next trim up, the P300 Dynamic SE, except for the 21-inch wheels. It lacks the more powerful six-cylinder engine of the upper trims, though, so if you plan to do more serious towing (the four-cylinder is rated for nearly 6,000 pounds) or off-roading, you'll want one of the P360 models. Otherwise, the P300S is a strong value.

Competitors to consider

The Discovery stands apart from most midsize SUVs thanks to its off-road readiness, but the Lexus GX measures up with a chassis and hardware informed by Toyota's Land Cruiser and 4Runner legacies. The GX even offers a center console chiller like the Discovery. The longer Jeep Grand Cherokee L is a more affordable but still classy option with equal off-road aptitude. If your activities tend more toward the pavement, the Acura MDX, Audi Q7 and Lincoln Aviator all place ahead of the Land Rover in Edmunds' luxury midsize SUV rankings. The BMW X5 is another worthy competitor with an optional third row.

Edmunds spotlight: Keep the change

Change comes slowly to the Discovery. This current version debuted eight years ago, and updates for 2025 are limited to standard foglights and minor shuffling of options. That's not a bad thing because the Discovery's fundamentals — impeccable cabin, smooth ride, off-road ability — remain sound. With an available two-speed transfer case and powerful V6, the Discovery can tow more (up to 8,200 pounds) and go deeper into the outlands than most rivals. A recently upgraded infotainment system now ranks among the class standouts, although a lack of wireless phone connectivity remains a glaring omission. Unfortunately, the Discovery's deeper flaws are more structural and include cramped rear quarters, a tall driving position and top-heavy handling, miscues that can only be addressed in the next redesign.

The car is beautiful and is a gorgeous burnt orange color. The inside still smells new. Great pickup when you're accelerating through traffic. So far, I love it!
