Logic dictates that a 5,498-pound SUV sitting high enough off the ground to provide 8.4 inches of clearance cannot possibly accelerate, corner and brake like a 2025 BMW X5 M can. Because physics. And yet, thanks to M division witchcraft, this family-friendly midsize sport-ute is also an absolutely bonkers high-performance vehicle. The turbocharged and electrified V8 engine produces substantial forward thrust, and this version of the X5 gets a full suspension, steering and braking massage to back it up. Add a healthy helping of luxury, and you have an SUV addressing all of your emotional wants and practical needs.

Driving experience

How does the BMW X5 M drive? The X5 M is hilariously quick, with a 0-60 mph time of just 3.5 seconds. That's faster than most sports cars we test at Edmunds, much less a 2.5-ton luxury SUV. That said, it's not hairy to drive. It settles down in the city or on the highway. Braking performance is similar, with sports car-like numbers in testing and smooth operation around town.

It handles well too, with a mostly stable suspension and decent steering, though some drivers may find the heavy steering weight makes parking a chore. Everyone is likely to find the ride to be too stiff, though, even in its Comfort mode. It's far too extreme. Our other major complaint is the overabundance of drive modes. There are six settings for the transmission, along with multiple modes for the brakes, engine and suspension. It's needlessly complicated.

Visibility is not great for an SUV, but there's a surround-view camera system standard. Various other driver assist technologies are very good too. Adaptive cruise control, blind-spot and rear cross-traffic warning systems are excellent, though active lane centering and auto high beams are only average. The Traffic Jam Assistant allows for hands-free driving, but only up to 40 mph.

Comfort

How comfortable is the BMW X5 M? As uncomfortable as the ride is, interior comfort and space are very good in the X5 M. The front sport seats offer plenty of adjustment. It may take some time to set the driver's seat up just right, but you'll be glad you took the time. The padding is firm and supportive, with good side and thigh bolstering. Just be mindful that its big side bolsters make it a little harder to get in and out of the seat.

Two adults will fit comfortably across the rear seat, but three will not. For car seats, there are upper anchors for all three rear seat positions, but most car seat lower tethers will only easily reach the lower anchors in the two outboard positions. The lower anchors are well marked behind plastic doors.

The climate control system could be better, though. Aside from the system being fussy to use, the fans are too weak and too loud for a car at this price. The cabin controls are also an issue. Most are buried in display menus and require tapping around a seemingly endless number of apps and pages. The learning curve is steep but rewards the effort. Fortunately, the excellent voice recognition system offers a shortcut.

In-cabin tech

How’s the tech? Though it's somewhat difficult to navigate, there's very little to fault with the in-car tech. The screen responds quickly and looks great with deep blacks and great bright colors. The standard sound system will satisfy most buyers, but hardcore audiophiles can opt for the 20-speaker Bowers & Wilkins system. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto both connect wirelessly and work faultlessly; we didn't experience a single errant disconnect.

BMW's voice control system is one of the best around. It can process commands like opening the sunroof, changing the temperature, turning on and off the head-up display, and more. Given how many of these functions are buried in a touchscreen menu, this is a welcome feature.

Storage & cargo

How’s storage and cargo? The X5 has always had a split-opening tailgate and it remains one of this midsize SUV's best features. It makes reaching toward the back of the cargo area a little harder, but it's otherwise a big point in the X5's favor. Total capacity of 33.9 cubic feet is strong for a midsize luxury SUV, too, and the load floor is reasonably low.

Unfortunately, there aren't many places to stash your smaller personal items. The cellphone tray is handy, but it's obstructed if you're using the cupholders, and the center console box is relatively small. The door pockets are moderately sized but don't do much to help you organize your small items. For such a luxury family-oriented vehicle like the X5, it's unfortunate there's not more cabin storage.

Is the BMW X5 M a good value? BMW, like other German automakers, has a well-deserved reputation for build quality. The interior is appointed with high-quality materials, including leather covering the seats, armrest and dashboard. Even the plastics look better than what you'll find in more mainstream vehicles. The fit and finish is equally impressive, with tight panel gaps and no shakes or rattles to speak of. That said, everything should be this nice given a price tag that soars deep into the $100,000 range. That price is typical for its small high-performance segment, so overall value is as well.

How’s the fuel economy? The EPA estimates the X5 M gets 15 mpg in combined city/highway driving. That's near the bottom of the class and warrants a score of "Poor" in our standardized fuel economy rating system. We don't expect performance SUVs to be thrifty, but be prepared to pay for frequent fill-ups.

While the X5 M can't quite hide its size and weight, it's got loads of charm. The turbo V8 helps this bruising SUV scoot with a verve that will put a smile on your face. And if the performance wasn't enough, the M version of the X5 loses none of the standard model's practicality. That means you can haul your family, their gear, and, you know, go really fast.

To create the X5 M, BMW's M performance division upgrades every component contributing to acceleration, braking, steering, ride and handling. The heart of the SUV is its turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 engine, which cranks out 617 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque. This SUV is a performance supercar. Sound, speed, tech, feel, materials. Love I upgraded from x5m60i (which is an awesome truck). This thing is beast. Love the exhaust note. But not uncomfortable (try my GTR Nismo). Still practical. Considered Land Rover (nice style but did not hit me), Jeep Trail Hawk (monster but not upscale). I am going to miss the end of the monste combustion engines …
