With midsize sedans growing increasingly rare, it follows that midsize hybrids would be rarer still. The base Blue trim gets 52 mpg combined (identical to its Toyota Camry rival), while the higher trim levels get 47 mpg combined. For comparison, the non-hybrid Sonata with the base 2.5-liter engine is rated at 32 mpg combined. Like the regular Sonata, the Sonata Hybrid has built a reputation as a sensible, reliable midsize sedan at an attractive price. Its roomy and comfortable interior makes it a smart pick for families and for drivers who like the cabin space of an SUV but not the taller ride height or driving position. Its infotainment system is also one of the more user-friendly out there. Check our test team's Expert Rating below for a more in-depth look at how the Sonata Hybrid might fit your life.

Good
8.0
out of 10
We drove the 2023 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid on our test track and on real roads. Our Edmunds team conducts rigorous independent vehicle testing, driving 500,000 miles a year.
Performance
7.5/10
How does the Sonata Hybrid drive? The Sonata Hybrid is adequate from a performance perspective. Acceleration feels good off the line but tapers off once you're rolling. Essentially, it feels zippy around town but may take some planning to pass cars at freeway speeds. In Edmunds' testing, our Sonata Hybrid test car covered 0-60 mph in 8.3 seconds. That's about as quick as the Camry Hybrid but a little slower than the Honda Accord Hybrid.
Around turns, the Sonata Hybrid feels balanced and controlled. It's also easy to drive around town. The six-speed automatic transmission is quicker to downshift than the continuously variable transmissions in the Accord Hybrid and Camry Hybrid. In general, the Sonata Hybrid drives a lot like a regular car, which could be a high point for some buyers. The brakes also feel pretty natural without any of the hybrid weirdness that can stem from blending regenerative and regular braking processes.

Comfort
7.5/10
How comfortable is the Sonata Hybrid? The Sonata Hybrid is a pretty comfortable car, but it isn't perfect. The front seats have a nice shape to them, but we found the padding a bit stiff, which can reduce your comfort on long trips. The outboard rear seats are nice and cushy, but the middle seat is stiff and uncomfortable.
Ride comfort is a high point and strikes a good balance between being compliant and controlled. The Sonata Hybrid's suspension absorbs impacts well without being overly floaty or soft when you take on curvy roads. The climate control system blows strong and cold at its max and is very effective at regulating cabin temperature in auto mode.
Surprisingly, road and wind noise is higher than average. It's not bothersome or loud, but you know that it's there. There's some engine noise at freeway speeds as well.

Interior
8/10
How’s the interior? The Sonata Hybrid's interior is intuitive to learn. The center stack controls are easily reachable for both driver and front passenger. The sharp and responsive 10.25-inch infotainment screen is also easy to read and use.
There's plenty of interior room for front occupants, and rear legroom is among the best in the segment. Most drivers will find that it is easy to settle into a comfortable driving position due to the decent range of adjustments in the seat and steering wheel. Visibility is good to the front and sides. But rear visibility is a little impeded because of the thick rear window pillars, sloping rear roofline and high rear deck.

Technology
8/10
How’s the tech? The Sonata Hybrid is loaded with tech and everything works pretty well. It leads the segment in infotainment screen size and response. It also has a segment-first solar panel roof that charges the hybrid battery when the car's moving or parked. Smartphone pairing and integration are excellent for both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and they work with the wide-screen format. The screen is also great when using the available surround-view camera system while parking. The voice controls work well with natural speech commands for radio, navigation and phone.
The suite of advanced driver aids is comprehensive, and the aids work well in concert. The warning sensors can be sensitive but never annoying. The instrument panel features unique sideview cameras when merging into the left or right lane.

Storage
8.5/10
How’s the storage? There's a good amount of storage in the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. It's easy to load things into the cargo area. The trunk is deep and broad and has a wide opening, and the hybrid battery doesn't intrude too much. Having rear-seat access levers in the cargo area is a plus.
Inside, there's plenty of storage to keep small items. The center console area alone has plenty of spaces for multiple phones, electronic passes and other items. The console itself is about 5.5 inches deep, and the cupholders are sizable enough for larger cups and bottles. As for installing child safety seats, there's plenty of room in the rear for even a rear-facing seat. The lower car seat anchors are somewhat buried in the upholstery, so installation can be a little tedious.

Fuel Economy
8.5/10
How’s the fuel economy? The Sonata Hybrid SEL, our test car, has an EPA estimate of 47 mpg (45 city/51 highway). That's right about what the other top-performing midsize hybrid sedans get. A trim-matching Camry XLE is rated at 46 mpg, while the Accord is at 47 mpg. We averaged 47.1 mpg in our test car during our mixed-driving evaluation route, which indicates the EPA's estimates seem to be spot-on.
Hyundai also offers an optional solar panel for the Sonata Hybrid. It covers the length of the roof between the windshield and the rear glass. It directly charges both the 12-volt battery and hybrid battery pack, and Hyundai says the solar panel can potentially power about 2 miles of extra driving per day. Toyota offered a solar roof on the Prius in the early part of the last decade, so it's not an all-new idea, but the Prius' panel could only power the climate control system.

Value
8.5/10
Is the Sonata Hybrid a good value? The Sonata Hybrid delivers on Hyundai's strong value proposition, giving you a lot of features for your money. The Limited trim level, which is the model we tested, validates its top-level price with exclusive features such as a solar panel roof and a 10.25-inch touchscreen. Warranty coverage is also fantastic, as Hyundai provides a five-year/60,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty and a 10-year/100,000-year powertrain warranty.
The interior and exterior build quality looks pretty good too. The assembly is precise, though Honda and Mazda manage to do interiors a bit nicer. Perhaps it's the dominant gray interior texturing that still looks a little cheap.

Wildcard
8/10
Whether you enjoy squeezing the most miles from every gallon of gasoline or having a hybrid that's enjoyable to drive on curvier roads, the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid is a willing partner. It's big on visual appeal too. It looks sporty, sophisticated and futuristic at the same time. It's a head-turner in a fairly vanilla segment.
2023 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid trim level differences
The 2023 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid is available in three trim levels: Blue, SEL and Limited. All are powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired to a hybrid system and a six-speed automatic transmission. The hybrid powertrain produces 192 horsepower. The Sonata Hybrid is only available in front-wheel drive.
Which Sonata Hybrid trim does Edmunds recommend?
If having the most efficient trim (Blue) isn't a priority, we recommend the SEL. It adds more comfort and tech features such as heated seats, a Bose audio system, a larger touchscreen and a wireless charging pad. It also offers the digital key feature, a neat party trick that lets you use an Android phone as a key.

Absolutely Amazing Car for the money..
5 out of 5 starsMatt Clark, Realtor, 02/24/2022
2022 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Limited 4dr Sedan (2.0L 4cyl gas/electric hybrid 6A)
I have a black limited with black leather, I researched every brand, BMW, Honda, Toyota, Kia, Lexus, Infinity, Mazda etc. This car has more tech than I could ever dream of for the price I paid. I actually said to dealers of high end luxury cars "Ok, so what can your $50, 60, 80, 100k car do that is so amazing?" I would put this car up against any luxury car and for the price and fuel … mileage, and warranty, I wouldn't take anything else. (now it is SLOW compared to a V8 Mercedes or BMW, but that car is NOT going to get 45-51 MPG. I love it, I wouldn't trade it for anything.
Battery goes into deep sleep
3 out of 5 starsBryan, 09/04/2022
2022 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Limited 4dr Sedan (2.0L 4cyl gas/electric hybrid 6A)
I loved this car at first. We parked at the airport for long term and by the fifth day I could no longer communicate using Bluelink. I contacted Hyundai. They told me that Bluelink was suspended because the battery went into a deep sleep automatically after sitting for a few days. I was told by Hyundai support that I would need to have it serviced each time it sits for a few days. This … is happening to other owners of the same car. For us, when we arrived back at the airport, two weeks, our key fobs would not work. The car was dead. We had to manually unlock it which required disassembling the door handle. Tried to start it, no response. The battery had to be jumped. Hyundai is refusing to discuss this with me and offer a fix. On a Facebook forum, other new owners are having the same issue and are in the process of arbitration with the lemon law process in their state, as Hyundai has admitted that they designed it that way. For another owner on the forum their battery could not be jump started and they had to get car towed to dealer. My car only has 6000 miles and it is broken, other new owners are experiencing the same according to the Facebook forum. This is with a solar roof which should keep a trickle charge to keep battery from going into deep sleep.

2021 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Limited 4dr Sedan (2.0L 4cyl gas/electric hybrid 6A)
Only had this vehicle for 2 weeks and purchased it because of its safety reviews and many safety features. I traded from a Jeep Renegade to this and this handles the road better than the Jeep. The issue I'm having is poor customer service from Hyundai and from the dealership. There's a noise that comes on at around 50mph plus my wife says it's from the front left-hand side I'm hearing it … from there as well as from the rear. The other issue is with Blue Link, Hyundai does not seem able to assist or maybe they are overwhelmed, also the dealership is unable to assist as they say it's too new and they don't know enough in order to assist. The dealership is Weisner in Conroe Texas, they appear to be very disorganized and not interested in any form of Customer Service.
Disappointed - 2023 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Limited
2 out of 5 starsBob Brady Decatur Costumer, 04/26/2023
2023 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Limited 4dr Sedan (2.0L 4cyl gas/electric hybrid 6A)
I purchased a brand-new Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Limited in January 2023 at Bob Brady Hyundai in Decatur IL. I will start my review by thanking Kyle Costello for his excellent customer service, knowledge of the inner working of the vehicles, and just for being a genuine person who is just as interested in helping you with your new car experience as he is with "selling" you a car. … Unfortunately, that is where my positive comments end. My experience did not begin with Kyle and was with a different salesperson who was pushy, did not disclose all the many add-ons and the cost added to the vehicle purchase until I was literally sitting in front of the financing guy with documents pushed in my face to sign (and yes I kept asking for a breakdown of the price), and he has had a very condescending attitude towards me since I purchased the vehicle and particularly when I asked for help communicating with the maintenance department about the car’s electrical issues. I purchased a brand-new Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Limited in January 2023. This is a beautiful car with more features than I will probably ever use! However, there are issues with the onboard displays and air conditioning that could be related to electrical issues or a software defect. I have been so disappointed having just paid over $40,000 for this 2023 Hyundai Sonata. This was my very first new car! I was so excited. The maintenance department have tried to diagnose the issue and did establish there was indeed a problem that is "beginning to show up in other vehicles" as well. The car was taken for over a week for repairs. After retrieving the vehicle, the very same problems consisted including onboard drivers displays reverting back to initial factory settings, resetting meters and indicators for fuel, mileage, and economy, the air conditioning also turns off and resets among other issues. On an almost daily basis I have to go in a reprogram the displays to show the correct information and I have lost any information stored for fuel, mileage, and fuel economy. My greatest disappointment is how I have been treated as a customer after purchasing the vehicle. I feel very much like now that they have my money, I am not a priority and there has been little to no communication from the maintenance department with any updates or communications from the Hyundai engineers. I understand that things like this can take time, but I have gone weeks without even a courtesy update on the status of my vehicle. I believe if I stopped calling the maintenance department, they would never bother to contact me and would just wait for me to go away.
We have a limited number of reviews for the 2023 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, so we've included reviews for other years of the Sonata Hybrid since its last redesign.
