Overview

When it comes to carrying lots of people, hauling plenty of cargo, and towing a bunch of weight, nothing but a traditional full-size SUV will do. Among them, the 2022 GMC Yukon XL is one of the biggest and most accommodating, an extended version of the standard Yukon that provides more third-row seat room and additional cargo volume in exchange for small reductions in payload and towing capacity.

This year, the Yukon XL lineup adds a standard digital driver information display and an infotainment system with Google built-in natural voice recognition technology. GMC also makes its more powerful 6.2-liter V8 engine available with the AT4 off-road-oriented trim for 2022, swaps its former trailering app for new trailering features, and adds a new Buckle to Drive function to the SUV's Teen Driver safety technology.
GMC positions the Yukon XL as a premium-brand offering, which makes it more expensive than its near twin, the Chevrolet Suburban. Choosing between the GMC and Chevy comes down to personal styling preferences because the two SUVs are otherwise largely identical. However, when you get the 2022 GMC Yukon XL Denali, it comes with a more upscale and sophisticated dashboard design not available in the Chevrolet.
Other than the Suburban, the Yukon XL's only direct competitor is the Ford Expedition Max. If you're willing to give up some interior volume, the Jeep Wagoneer is also a worthy alternative.

2022 GMC Yukon XL trim level differences
The 2022 GMC Yukon XL is a full-size SUV that seats seven to nine passengers in three rows of seats, depending on configuration. It is available in four trim levels: SLE, SLT, AT4 and Denali. A 5.3-liter V8 (355 horsepower, 383 lb-ft of torque) is standard with all but the Denali, which gets a 6.2-liter V8 (420 hp, 460 lb-ft). The larger V8 is an option with the AT4 trim. Additionally, a turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder diesel engine (277 hp, 460 lb-ft) is available at extra cost with the SLE and SLT trims and at a discount with the Denali trim. All engines use a 10-speed automatic transmission to power the Yukon XL's rear wheels. Four-wheel drive is optional across the entire model line except on the AT4, where it's standard.
Which Yukon XL trim does Edmunds recommend?
If you're not interested in saving thousands by choosing a Chevrolet Suburban, you should go ahead and get the high-luxe Denali trim of GMC's Yukon XL. It's the version that best delivers on the promise of GMC's premium positioning, including the more powerful V8 engine, bold mesh grille, exclusive dashboard design and available plush Ultimate package.

They don’t make them like they used to

2022 GMC Yukon XL Denali 4dr SUV 4WD (6.2L 8cyl 10A)
Although these vehicles are beautiful to look at, they definitely don’t make them like they used to. I didn’t even have it 2 full days and the radio and sound throughout the whole vehicle went out. It wouldn’t work again until I shut the car down for the night and tried again the next day. Hasn’t happened again for a few days, but from what I’ve investigated, it’s prone to happen again. … It’s got a few things that I’m not too happy about. Nothing that’s the end of the world, but definitely annoying when you pay 90k for a vehicle.
Disappointed - the roof leaks after 2 years

2021 GMC Yukon XL AT4 4dr SUV 4WD (5.3L 8cyl 10A)
Bought our 2021 GMC Yukon XL SLT brand spankin’ new off the lot. No complaints until 2 years and 20 days after ownership when the roof leaked on a rainy morning. The water poured into the car through the interior light covers and control panel above the driver and passenger seat. Water also poured in through a lower duct by the driver’s left leg. GMC would not allow a warranty on it. We … give thumbs down to GMC and Chevrolet products. It’s no wonder so many people buy foreign cars —- they are better quality than American cars. 👎🏼GMC👎🏼
I love my GMC Yukon XL but not love at first sight

2021 GMC Yukon XL SLT 4dr SUV (5.3L 8cyl 10A)
UPDATE TO MY REVIEW BELOW: I guess this is a vehicle that has to be "broken" in. I'm happy to report that my GWM Yukon XL is "broken" in! The seats are comfortable and the steering wheel has conformed to my grip. My 6 and 8 year old grandbabies can operate the rear entertainment system with no issues. I still wish it would work with an iPhone instead of just an Android phone. I … purchased the floor mats that interlock for the front, middle, and back floors. The front and middle are perfect. The back mat leaves much to be desired. I'm comparing it to my 2015 Suburban and it does not prevail. The Yukon back mat is not rubber even though the GM website and my local dealership says it is. It slides back and sometime the back hatch door will not shut because the mat is in the way. The mat cost over $100 and I was provided with velcro to place on the back on the mat and on the vehicle carpet to keep the mat in place. I did not put the velcro on the mat or on my carpet and I will not do that. The mat that I bought from Chevy for my suburban was, in fact, rubber and did not slip or slide. It stayed in place. In addition, it was only $65. Disappointed in that. GM - you can do better.
The Yukon XL looks nice and drives good. Comfort is an exception - the steering wheel is not padded. It is wrapped in leather but has a protrusion at the top facing the driver that really causes pain when driving - it is extremely hard and uncomfortable. The drivers seat has three seams and is not comfortable. The rear entertainment center is very hard to get working. I have an Iphone and therefore you can't use the Iphone with it unless you purchase a new cord that will work with it. I ended up using an Amazon Fire Stick that works fine now but it took me two days (six hours) to figure out how to operate it and make it come out of the speakers. It shouldn't be this hard.....
GMC Way To Go.
