Step up from older RAV4 Hybrid

2022 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Limited 4dr SUV AWD (2.5L 4cyl gas/electric hybrid CVT)

I traded in my 2016 RAV4 Hybrid Limited for the 2022 version of the same model and trim. The trade-in offer for my 2016 was just too juicy to ignore, even while I had to pay the full MSRP for the new one. Further, there was essentially no waiting time as the dealer happened to have one available (due to a cancelled order) with essentially every feature (even color scheme) I would have … specified. A rare dumb luck case of being at the right place at the right time. Gas prices had just spiked to $4.00/gallon, so the few hybrid vehicles the dealer was able to get were being immediately gobbled up. As I write this, gas is now getting closer to $5.00/gallon. I'm feeling particularly fortunate acquiring this vehicle when I did. Now that I've driven the new model, I realize I would have waited the months it would have taken if I had to place a cold order. Pretty much everything is a step up from the 2016 hybrid (and I liked that one a lot): A more refined ride, superior gas mileage, much improved punch/acceleration, increased horse power, higher ground clearance, interior ambient lighting, excellent and additional technology appointments, and more. My driving environments include flat Florida highways and suburban roads, seriously twisting, steeply inclined mountain roads in mid-Atlantic ski country, and some light off-road routes to out-of-the-way fishing spots. The added power is going to help especially with ascending the mountain roads. The acceleration improvement is a welcome change on the highway when passing and generally getting out of the way. The on-demand AWD is plenty capable for moderate off-road and snow travel adventures. I'm going to upgrade the OEM Dunlop tires for better cornering and traction in inclement weather conditions. Some reviewers complain about the vehicles being noisy, but I find the 2022 model noticeably more quiet than its 2016 counterpart. Maybe add some carpeting for added noise dampening if that's an issue? For me it is not. Also, some reviewers caution that headroom and legroom might be limiting factors for taller drivers. I'm 6' 3'' and weigh 190 lbs. I have no problem with either. In fact, I often wear a hat while driving with no issues. I'm very pleased with the cargo space, build quality, SUV height with sedan quality ride, all the tech and safety features.......pretty much everything about this car. Assuming it proves as reliable and lasts as long as my former Toyota vehicles, this purchase was a big win during difficult availability and high fuel cost times. If you are considering a hybrid vehicle, the new RAV4 hybrid is a worthy contender, in my opinion.

A most Excellent Hybrid

2022 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid XLE Premium 4dr SUV AWD (2.5L 4cyl gas/electric hybrid CVT)

We put a deposit down to be on the wait list for a 2022 Rav 4 hybrid. We wanted XLE Premium trim but were flexible on the color. Our salesman said it was taking about 2-4 months. We got a call one week after we put down the deposit. They received a black XLE Premium Rav 4 and we got called because four other people did not want the black color. We took delivery on Friday, June 10, … 2022. The salesman was extremely helpful. He demonstrated all the new technology and made sure that we were comfortable before we drove home. We came out of a 2012 Rav 4 V-6 Limited that we bought new. Carvana gave us a fantastic offer to buy it outright. The 2012 Rav could get about 24 mpg on a long trip. Otherwise, about 19 in town. As another reviewer noted, the new Rav is leaps and bounds ahead of our 2012. It is a bit smaller, at least on the inside, but still very roomy. The new Rav is substantially quieter than our 2012. The ride is very smooth, tight, and you can tell that this is using Toyota's new TGNA chassis. The power is very good, comparable to our old V-6. The throttle tip in is spot on, compared to the hyper sensitive throttle on our old Rav V-6. Very impressive. Our new one has the JBL audio upgrade. This is an amazing sound system. Excellent depth, clarity and loudness without distortion. The new safety features are a huge upgrade. Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Blind Spot Monitor, pre collision braking, Lane Keeping Assist, Advanced cruise control, and so on. Very nice and they are very helpful. We drove 32 miles home on the highway and averaged 43,8 mpg. The braking feels no different than what we are used to. Just good, strong braking. The Rav runs on battery quite a bit and has Stop/Start when you stop. Electric motors get you going and gas kicks in when needed. Hats off to Toyota, because all of these systems operate seamlessly and you would not know when the gas engine cycled on or off unless you looked at the monitor that shows the power flow. The build quality is exceptional. Ours was built in Canada where the Lexus equivalent is assembled. The 9" display is clear, and responds well to inputs. The Sirius xm radio sounds amazing through the JBL. Have not driven it at night yet, but I look forward to the blessing of LED lighting. We also had the door edge guards and body side moldings put on. I will add the mudguards later. We are very happy with our new hybrid! Update: all that I noted in the first review remains true. We now have 16,000 miles on it and as of today, the MPG is at 47.7! Cold weather drops your mileage so after winter we were at 41.1 MPG. We have had our car for 2 1/2 years. ALl that I initially posted remains true. Great quality, all things work as they did when we bought it and mileage continues to impress. Update June 2025: our Rav continues to perform flawlessly with great mileage In typical Toyota fashion there have been no quality issues

Overall a great Hybrid minus some issues.

2022 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid XSE 4dr SUV AWD (2.5L 4cyl gas/electric hybrid CVT)

Love the looks of my XSE, especially the black roof and black wheels with silver body, it all comes together. The interior also looks acceptable and sporty. Ergonomics, really no complaint. I purchased my 2022 RAV4 XLE Premium in May 2022. All summer and most of the fall I averaged around 40 to 42 mpg. However, in early November the fuel mileage began to drop significantly as the temperatures cooled off. I just returned from a 1,000 mile trip and only averaged 32.5 mpg.
