2026 Lexus GX Review
Overview

No matter which Lexus you buy, you can be assured that luxury was the priority during the design and engineering process. That's no different with the 2026 Lexus GX. But the GX packs an almost equal amount of off-road capability to accompany the soft leather seats and whisper-quiet interior. Its rugged underpinnings and relatively compact size make it a compelling choice for well-heeled adventure enthusiasts.
Edmunds spotlight: Hidden capability
Sure, the Lexus GX has the styling of a futuristic rugged SUV, but there are a lot of vehicles on sale today that can't exactly back up their looks. But when you opt for the GX in its Overtrail trim, there's genuine capability lurking beneath that pristine paint job and wonderfully detailed interior. Complete with all-terrain tires, a locking rear differential, a low-range transfer case, and terrain-specific stability and traction control, the GX doesn't need any help getting off the parkway and deep into the national park.
Competitors to consider
When you think luxury off-roader, the Land Rover Defender should immediately spring to mind. A reincarnation of the legendary safari SUV, the Defender was recently reborn swathed in leather and premium materials but still packed with real off-road chops. With three available body styles, the Defender does offer a bit more personalization than the GX. If you're on a tighter budget, the Toyota Land Cruiser offers much of the same hardware as the GX but with a less powerful engine and a more basic interior.
What’s it like to live with?
Our test team purchased a Lexus GX to find out how much the latest generation GX has improved. At around $86K, it wasn't cheap, but that got us the new Overtrail trim, which comes with off-road-optimized suspension, all-terrain tires, and extra cameras for better trail visibility. We'll be driving and living with this GX for about a year and 20,000 miles. Read Edmunds' Lexus GX One-Year Road Test for all of the details.
Edmunds Expert Rating

Driving experience
Handling isn't this big SUV's forte. When pushed, there's noticeable body roll, though you won't feel like you're out of control. Off-road is where the GX can shine. The Overtrail version comes with some extra features, such as a locking rear differential, to give this SUV better-than-average capability.
The GX has a lot of standard and optional driver aids, but our staff didn't love how they worked on the road. The hands-free driving system is a neat inclusion, but it only works up to 25 mph and constantly beeps at you and dips in and out of operation. On the other hand, the surround-view and off-road camera systems are excellent.
For such a prominent off-road SUV, the ride quality is impressive. The Luxury model and its on-road tires will deliver an even nicer ride than what we experienced with the all-terrain rubber on our Overtrail test vehicle.
Comfort
In terms of passenger space, there's less second-row room than you'd think given the GX's size, and the third row is very cramped. As a five-passenger vehicle, the GX is passable, but if you want to carry any more than that, you'll need to be prepared to field some complaints from the peanut gallery.
The GX's driver controls are better than those in some of the automaker's other SUVs because it has real buttons on the steering wheel that are intuitively laid out. The climate controls are baked into the screen, but a physical dial is there for adjusting the temperature, which is nice.
Installing a car seat isn't too bad with three LATCH anchors available. However, the somewhat tight door opening might make the process a bit more cumbersome.
In-cabin tech
The cabin has multiple USB-C ports in both rows, and a wireless charging pad that is neatly tucked away in the center console storage area.
Storage & cargo
Small-item storage takes a hit if you opt for the cooled center console because it makes that storage bin quite small — though it's still large enough to fit three or four cans of whatever it is you need to keep cold. There are decently sized door pockets, but the front of the car especially lacks spots to put any items other than a phone.
The GX tows over 9,000 pounds, which is better than the Cadillac Escalade and the Infiniti QX80.
Value
The GX has just about every option you could want on a luxury off-roader, but some of its features, like navigation, require a subscription. After three years, you will need to pay each month to keep them activated. The four-year/50,000-mile warranty is good for the segment but not the best.

2026 Lexus GX trim level differences
[Editor's note: The following unofficial information is based on last year's GX. We expect the 2026 model will have a similar lineup and we'll update this section once we have complete information.] The Lexus GX is a midsize luxury SUV available in six trim levels: Premium, Premium Plus, Luxury, Luxury+, Overtrail and Overtrail+. A turbocharged 3.4-liter V6 (349 horsepower, 479 lb-ft of torque) is the only engine offered and it's paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. Four-wheel drive is standard on every trim.
Which GX trim does Edmunds recommend?
Lexus hasn't released official information on the 2026 GX as of this writing. We'll update our recommendation if anything changes, but based on last year's GX, we think the base Premium will satisfy most buyers. It comes well loaded with heated and ventilated seats, a large touchscreen, and plenty of driver assistance features. More adventurous types should consider the Overtrail model for its beefier tires and locking rear differential.
