RYAN ZUMMALLEN: Hey, I hope you like drag racing on dry lake beds, because that is exactly what we're going to do right now. What are we drag racing, you ask? Our long-term Ford Bronco, which we own, going up against our long-term Jeep Wrangler, which we also own. We came out to the desert to drag race a whole bunch of trucks, and these two came along as our support vehicles. Turns out, it's the end of the day, we've got a little extra time, let's see what happens if we throw these two out there.
Now here's the funny thing about that. The Bronco is relatively new. We've only had it for a few months. But the Wrangler, we've had for a long, long time. There's about 70,000 miles on that thing, and they're pretty hard miles. Basically, any video of ours that you've seen with some off-roading in it, that thing has been bringing up the rear as our support vehicle.
They say the perfect race car crosses the finish line first and immediately falls to pieces. Because of this, neither one of our test drivers were that stoked about driving the Wrangler. So we settled it with a coin toss.
JONATHAN ELFALAN: Tails. [BLEEP]
I am in our long-term Jeep Wrangler, and if there's any advantage that I have over that Bronco, it's age and experience. This car is nearly five years old, and I have over 80,000 miles on the odometer. So this thing is well broken-in, and that has to count for something, right?
REESE COUNTS: We've got Edmond's long-term Bronco. It's pretty closely matched on paper, but that Wrangler has got about 80,000 miles on it. So that Pentastar V6 may be a little tired. I'm hoping the turbo and the EcoBoost will really help me here. Honestly, I'm just going to kind of brake it, give it some gas, and hope for the best.
JONATHAN ELFALAN: My strategy for the race here is really just to keep the wheels on, and hope that nothing else falls off in the process. But I'm also going to turn off stability and traction control, run it in 4 high, do a little power braking to take up the slack in the transmission, pray for the best. Because let's be honest, I think I've already lost this race. I blame the coin tosser, really. Like, you should have seen it. Worst coin tosser in the history of coin tossing.
RYAN ZUMMALLEN: OK, guys, here we go. Get your refrigerators ready. 5 4, 3, 2, 1. Go.
JONATHAN ELFALAN: Oh, I got the jump. Here we go. Come on, don't look away!
REESE COUNTS: Go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go.
JONATHAN ELFALAN: You got this.
REESE COUNTS: Yeah.
JONATHAN ELFALAN: You got this. Ooh, so close. Oh, you don't got this. But it's so close.
REESE COUNTS: How'd it go?
JONATHAN ELFALAN: Dude, I almost had you.
REESE COUNTS: You did, I was a little-- I stumbled a bit off the line.
JONATHAN ELFALAN: But let's be honest. Were you scared for, like, even just a little bit?
REESE COUNTS: Honestly, I thought you might have me until about halfway down. Yeah, when the turbos came on and this EcoBoost, it really, really, really picked up.
RYAN ZUMMALLEN: Reese, explain yourself.
REESE COUNTS: Well, I kind of narfed the launch, but kept my foot in it and powered past Jonathan right at the end. I really thought the Jeep had me. I-- yeah, yeah. You got out of the gate quick.
RYAN ZUMMALLEN: Let's do another one, see what happens.
JONATHAN ELFALAN: Let's do it. I'm down. I'm feeling pumped now.
REESE COUNTS: I know, I'm ready. Not going to catch me this time.
RYAN ZUMMALLEN: Refrigerators ready? 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. Go.
REESE COUNTS: Oh, this is-- stumbles out of the gate.
JONATHAN ELFALAN: Come on, Wrangler. Come on, buddy. Come on. Go, go, go, go, oh. Oh, my god, it's so close. Oh, my god.
REESE COUNTS: A little closer, that one.
JONATHAN ELFALAN: Yeah, I think-- I mean, I think you got a better launch, too.
REESE COUNTS: Yeah, I did get a better launch that time. But that Jeep looked like it got a good one, too.
JONATHAN ELFALAN: Yeah, I don't know. I'm feeling pretty good. Like, this thing is feeling surprisingly potent for 80,000 miles on the odo.
REESE COUNTS: I've always liked that Pentastar V6. Man, this thing still felt really strong.
RYAN ZUMMALLEN: All right, guys. Let's line up for a rolling race.
JONATHAN ELFALAN: All right, Kate, you got this. You got this.
RYAN ZUMMALLEN: All right.
JONATHAN ELFALAN: You got this.
RYAN ZUMMALLEN: Ready, set, go.
REESE COUNTS: Oh. Oh. And mid-range power. Bye, bye, Jeep.
JONATHAN ELFALAN: Yeah, I didn't think that rolling race was going to help me at all. Well I guess I can say that it's not a complete waste of money, now that you managed to beat a five-year-old car with over 80,000 miles-- hard miles, might I add-- but yeah, I guess you won that one.
REESE COUNTS: Excuses, excuses. You're just jealous you don't have a Ford power under that hood.
JONATHAN ELFALAN: I mean, that's true, but, you know, I'm also very well broken-in and I think I think I held my own, all considering what this thing has been through. It's had a really, I mean, I'm not going to say rough life, but it's had a well-traveled life under our ownership, and especially as a support vehicle. Hey, I have. I'm walking away with no regrets in this thing.
RYAN ZUMMALLEN: So let me break down what you just witnessed. In the first race, it was a surprise attack with the Wrangler jumping out to an early lead. But actually, by the time the Bronco got up to speed, it hit 60 miles per hour, more than a second faster than the Wrangler did. And that continued all the way to the finish line, where the Bronco finished in 15.7 seconds to 16.4 for the Jeep.
Race two was a very close start off the line as the Bronco seemed to be working out some internal struggles. But before long, it had sorted everything out and got to 60 miles an hour in 8 seconds, with the Wrangler hitting 60 in 8.6. This was just the advantage that the Bronco needed to come across the finish line about 2/10 of a second ahead of the Wrangler.
In the rolling race, the Bronco was much more comfortable this time, and had little trouble building a gap that it would not lose to the Wrangler. Still a pretty impressive showing for the Jeep, though.
Well, we finally have an answer to that age-old question, which is better at drag racing, a Bronco or a Wrangler? OK, maybe it's not an age-old question, but we have an answer now. Click like and subscribe if you want to see more drag races just like this one. And leave us a comment and let us know what we should do with these two cars next. I mean, we're doing this crazy stuff with them. Maybe we should take them up a jump or something. We own them both. I don't know. Why not?
