The moment it burst onto the scene in 2019, the BMW X7 established itself as one of the preeminent large three-row luxury SUVs. It offers a choice of powerful engines, standard all-wheel drive, and the kinds of high-tech features that we simply can't seem to live without these days. It's also surprisingly fun to drive thanks to its well-sorted suspension and brakes. BMW gave the X7 a noteworthy styling and technology update for 2023, and even though that's a few years in the rearview, the changes were enough to keep the big cruiser afloat for a while. We don't anticipate any major changes until an all-new X7 debuts, possibly for the 2027 model year.
Edmunds spotlight: Big but still a BMW
We already mentioned that the BMW X7 handles well, but it's especially true when you compare it to other vehicles in its price category. Naturally it handles better than truck-based SUVs like the Cadillac Escalade and Jeep Grand Wagoneer, but even with the base six-cylinder engine, it out-accelerates them too. The X7's steering and brakes feel sharp and responsive, a trait missing from most of its competitors, which makes it satisfying even on a mountain road.
Competitors to consider
While the BMW X7 has its strengths, it's a little smaller than others in its price category. If you need more room, the Escalade, Grand Wagoneer and Lincoln Navigator all offer more space. The Mercedes-Benz GLS is also a little roomier and more plush inside even if it doesn't have the BMW's sharp handling.
