byReese Counts

- Comfortable and luxurious cabin
- Sporty handling and acceleration
- Impressive off-road capabilities
Cons
- Modest cargo capacity for the class
What's new
- Plug-in hybrid and diesel engines no longer available
- Minor changes to optional and standard equipment
- Part of the second Range Rover Sport generation introduced for 2014
The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover Sport is a midsize luxury SUV. It slots between the full-size Range Rover and the smaller, sleeker Range Rover Evoque in Land Rover's lineup. The current-generation Range Rover Sport dates back to 2014, but Land Rover has made enough rolling updates over the years to largely keep pace with the competition.
Cost to DriveCost to drive estimates for the 2022 Land Rover Range Rover Sport P360 HSE Silver Edition 4dr SUV 4WD (3.0L 6cyl Twincharger gas/electric mild hybrid 8A) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of $4.15 per gallon for premium unleaded in Virginia.

Avg. Midsize SUV
There are a few significant changes for 2022, most notably to the powertrain offerings. The turbocharged diesel V6 is no longer available, and the plug-in hybrid variant has been dropped for 2022 because of parts shortages caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Range Rover Sport has a lot of competition in the market. Some of our favorite midsize luxury SUVs include the Audi Q8, BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz GLE and Porsche Cayenne. Compared to those rivals, the Range Rover Sport is a step or two behind in terms of comfort and technology features. It's also somewhat more expensive, though you do get respectable off-road capability as part of the deal. Overall, the Range Rover Sport isn't our top pick for a midsize SUV, but it has a certain charm that's hard to replicate elsewhere.
Which Range Rover Sport does Edmunds recommend?
We think the best pick of the bunch is the HSE Silver Edition. It offers more standard features than the base SE while keeping the cost reasonable. You'll probably want the Drive Pro Pack option as it adds some helpful advanced driver aids such as traffic-adaptive cruise control.
Land Rover Range Rover Sport models
The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover Sport is available in seven trim levels: SE, HSE Silver Edition, HST, HSE Dynamic, Autobiography, SVR and SVR Carbon Edition. For 2022, the engine lineup has been slimmed down. Land Rover no longer offers the diesel engine or the plug-in hybrid powertrain. That leaves the turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six and supercharged 5.0-liter V8 as the only two engines. Both are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard four-wheel drive.
SE
Starts you out with:
- Turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine (355 horsepower, 365 lb-ft)
- 19-inch wheels
- LED headlights
- Power liftgate
- Proximity keyless entry and push-button start
- Power-adjustable front seats
- Dual-zone automatic climate control
- Digital instrument panel
- 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system
- Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration
Every Range Rover Sport also comes with:
- Lane keeping assist (steers the Range Rover Sport back into its lane if it begins to drift over the lane marker)
- Parking sensors (alert you to obstacles that may not be visible in front of or behind the vehicle when parking)
- Forward collision mitigation (warns you of an impending collision and applies the brakes in certain scenarios)
HSE Silver Edition
Gains a bevy of features, including:
- 21-inch wheels
- Panoramic sunroof
- Upgraded power-adjustable front seats
- Heated and ventilated front seats
- Heated rear seats
- Heated steering wheel
- Front console refrigerator
- Four-zone automatic climate control
- Cabin air ionizer
- 19-speaker Meridian audio system
- Blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert (warns you if a vehicle is in your blind spot during a lane change or while in reverse)
- Driver attention warning (issues an alert if sensors determine you are becoming fatigued)
- Surround-view camera system (gives you a top-down view of the Range Rover Sport and its surroundings for tight parking situations)
HST
Sportier than the HSE Silver Edition, the HST has:
- Increased engine output of 395 hp and 405 lb-ft of torque
- Adaptive suspension (enhances ride comfort and handling)
- Contrasting black roof
- Black exterior trim
- Aluminum interior trim
- Leather and simulated suede upholstery

- Supercharged 5.0-liter V8 (518 hp, 461 lb-ft)
- Air suspension (can adjust the vehicle's ride height)
- 21-inch wheels
- Upgraded power-adjustable seats
- Panoramic sunroof
- 13-speaker Meridian audio system
- Additional leather trim
- Blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert
- Driver attention warning
Autobiography
The most luxurious trim available on the Range Rover Sport, the Autobiography has just about everything above as standard, plus:
- Even more adjustments for the front seats
- Soft-close doors (catch as they're being closed and gently pull shut)
- 19-speaker Meridian audio system
SVR
Effectively a sportier version of the Autobiography, the SVR has:
- More powerful supercharged V8 (575 hp, 516 lb-ft)
- Sport-tuned air suspension
- Upgraded brakes
- Front sport seats
- Sport steering wheel
SVR Carbon Edition
While Land Rover breaks this out into a separate trim, it's more of a package for the standard SVR. Upgrades include:
- 22-inch gloss black wheels
- Exposed carbon-fiber hood
- Carbon-fiber engine cover
- Carbon-fiber interior and exterior trim
The Range Rover Sport is available with a number of options. Notable ones include:
- Drive Pro Pack
- Blind-spot monitor (SE trim only)
- Adaptive cruise control (adjusts speed to maintain a constant distance between the vehicle and the car in front and can also react to traffic signs and set speed)
- Upgraded frontal collision mitigation system
- Towing Pack
- Off-Road Pack
- Additional drive modes
- Transfer case with low range
- 23-speaker Meridian audio system
- Cabin air ionizer

1/5 stars, Major electrical issue
J white,
HSE 4dr SUV 4WD (3.0L 6cyl S/C 8A)
Just purchased a brand new 2019 Range Rover sport and the car has had a complete electrical/ system failure. Tried to start the car and nothing works. We had the car towed and the dealer has no solution except to wait until corporate engineering finds a solution. The car has been at the dealer for a while now and others have been affected for over a month with no solution or fix on the … horizon. From what we have learned this seems to be a much larger issue.
1/5 stars, Inreliable waste of money and time
mbakir,
P400e HSE 4dr SUV 4WD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo gas/electric hybrid 8A)
My new 2020 RR PHEV had engine light still turned on after 3 times back to dealer service with changing parts. Now in service 4th time and they said that all this model cars in the world will be recalled for new hybride software that will be ready at the end of September 2020. 3 mo ths after buying a new very expensive car, still stuck to service and my lowyer has been dealing with … manufacturer. UNRELIABLE CAR!!!!!
1/5 stars, Electronic nightmare
PHEV owner,
P400e HSE 4dr SUV 4WD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo gas/electric hybrid 8A)
If all you had to do was look at this beauty in the parking lot or sit in it, it would be fabulous...unfortunately, you also have to drive it and that's where the romance ends.
I purchased a P400E, the plug in hybrid, which purports the ability to select a "full electric" drive setting. Despite selecting this drive mode, the car has never driven under full electric at any time. … Typically, only 25% of any trip is under electric power when selecting the "full electric" "EV" position. Land Rover has tried to explain the car has "certain algorithms" that force it into gas engine mode. While I agree that my Volvo PHEV also turns on the engine for a short burst if I accelerate hard, it turns it off fairly quickly and returns to full electric mode. This cannot be said for the Range Rover Sport which seems to turn on the engine randomly in addition to a hard acceleration.
Black screens. The Sport's two center information panels also have a mind of their own turning themselves off at will. Occasionally, the screens reset themselves after a few minutes at other times, one must turn off the car to reset them. Additionally, under normal operation, they are slow to respond making access very clunky.
Back up camera. Another feature that works about 90% of the time, but when you spend 90K for a vehicle, you would expect something 100% reliable.
Other issues...throttle response inconsistent, parking brake occasionally activates by itself at when leaving a parking space, electric plug sometimes does not release (locking and unlocking the car a couple of times usually fixes it).
Bottom line, pass on this vehicle. If you are really need this brand, skip the Sport as I know other people that have returned theirs due to similar electronic gremlins. If you're looking for an SUV PHEV that works, try the Volvo.

Time line:
I bought the car brand new 11/12/21 cash $112k cash
The first week I started noticing vibrations though it was just a tire balance thing seeing I'm over 2hrs from dealership went to my friends tire shop by where I live he said one was no good had a broken steel belt in it So I called the dealer they overnighted me a new tire I had it … put on and there was still a vibration right at 40mph. So we balanced all the tires still was there so called the dealer told them and the car was pick up at my house and I was left a loner to drive.
That was 11/28/21 it went back to Marin Land Rover
After a week of being at the dealership I started wondering what was going on was told one of the wheels wasn't balanced correctly it was missing 14oz's of wheel weights which is Insane if you know anything about cars. They put almost a pound of them little silver weights on one wheel. They told me it was fixed and the were sending the car back I asked did you drive the car and the vibration is gone now was told yes. When the car did arrive back at my house I called the dealership and was told the vibration was not gone after he did drive it himself. the next day I was told it was one in a million thing but the right rear axle was bent 2 days to get part now its been 8 days and I'm not feeling to confident about whos working on my new 112k car. So i guess I call so many time that the GM and Service foreman call me that night telling me that there tire machine was broken that why the crazy wheel weight thing happen. and they had the new axle and the old axle out of the car taking time to inspect the rear end for damage which takes time before they can put the new axle in. Please give them till noon the next day and it would be done. And I was told you seem upset how about I just give you all your money back? And I should do that because if it does need a rear end its back ordered and don't when they could get one? After hearing all the BS from that night I drove down there about 5am getting there about 7am as everyone was coming in to work. My car Hadn't been touched other that one rear wheel was off the car No axle out No rear end Needed And come to fine out later from Livermore Land Rover The rear end wasn't back ordered at all. Just trying to buy the car back so they could sell it for more was admitted to me by the foreman in the shop!I had the car removed from there dealership and Brought down to Livermore where a friend of mine had work before and told me who to talk to there.
"Please note on work orders there pulling on 14oz of weights and I the next work order there taking them off
12/7/21
Livermore tech looks at the car and drives it they first take off the 14oz of wheel weights and rebalance the 2 rear tires only and find the rear rt axle is bent they get the axle replaced nothing at all wrong with the rear end of the car as stated at the last shop. Drive the car and there's still a vibration . so the replace the rear drive shaft. and give the car back to me saying its fixed. and give the car back 12/21/21 I drive it for a couple weeks and I'm noticing a vibration in the front along with the steering wheel is turned a little to the right while going straight along with when you hit the gas the whole car takes off to the left changing lanes on its own.
2/1/22
I call Livermore Land Rover and tell them all this back to dealership service it goes they see exactly what I'm seeing and this time balance the front tires. and align the car not once but twice. straightening the steering wheel and get the car to almost not pull to the left when stepping on the gas. but when pulling in they hear a noise coming from the front of the car so the replace the right front wheel bearing. that don't get now they see something wrong with the front short shaft so the replace that. even though the car still goes to the left when hitting the gas but say that its just because it such a powerful motor. and they align it again but that's the best they can do. while its there because I by now complain to Land rover the northern rep see my car and asks for all the work order's on the car AND I'M TOLD SEEING IVE HAD SO MANY PROBLEM THE GOT TO EXPIDITE THE REPLACEMENT OF MY CAR.
Which brings us up to date with the saying they no longer replace cars due to the pandemic
2/16/22
I get the car back and there's still a vibration not as bad but still there steering wheel is straight now but the car still takes off to the left when stepping hard on the gas. But I don't sweat it because I was told by the service mgr. and the GM at Livermore there going to replace the car. They don't like to but If I keep pushing the issue they will they just did for another one of there customer's. ITS NOW GOING BACK UNDER THE LEMON LAW DUE TO THE FACT OF IT BEING IN THE SHOP FOR REPLIRS THE FIRST 42 DAYS OF THE FIRST 90 DAYS
I OWNED IT

Land Rover Range Rover Sport vs. the competition

2022 Land Rover Range Rover Sport

2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class
Land Rover Range Rover Sport vs. Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class
The Mercedes-Benz GLE is Edmunds' top-rated midsize luxury SUV. From in-car tech to a premium interior, the GLE offers nearly everything we could ask for in a luxury vehicle. The Range Rover Sport is generally more entertaining to drive (save for Mercedes-AMG models) and offers standard all-wheel drive. That said, it simply doesn't feel as modern as the Mercedes.
Land Rover Range Rover Sport vs. Porsche Cayenne
The Porsche Cayenne is the driver's SUV in this segment thanks to sharp handling and a lineup of powerful engines. The Cayenne doesn't sacrifice performance for comfort, though there are more comfortable vehicles in this class. The Cayenne's main issue is price. Base models are relatively light on features, and options can quickly add up.
Land Rover Range Rover Sport vs. Land Rover Range Rover Velar
The Range Rover Velar is the Range Rover Sport's smaller sibling. The design is sleeker and more stylish than the Sport, though the pair drive similarly. The Velar doesn't offer quite as much passenger space, but it does offer more cargo space than the Sport. It's also quite a bit less expensive.

Should I lease or buy a 2022 Land Rover Range Rover Sport?
Is it better to lease or buy a car? Ask most people and they'll probably tell you that car buying is the way to go. And from a financial perspective, it's true, provided you're willing to make higher monthly payments, pay off the loan in full and keep the car for a few years. Leasing, on the other hand, can be a less expensive option on a month-to-month basis. It's also good if you're someone who likes to drive a new car every three years or so.
