Automakers typically redesign their vehicles every five to six years. But push the life cycle longer, and they run the risk of having an overly dated product.

Land Rover hasn't fully redesigned its Range Rover Sport since the 2014 model year. Compared to some newer luxury SUVs (including some even in Land Rover's own lineup), the Sport might come across as a little dated. Thankfully, there have been enough recent updates to keep the 2020 Range Rover Sport a viable pick.
The Sport may be an old-timer, but it looks just as fresh as the brand's newer SUVs. Credit is due in part to a significant refresh in 2018 that updated the interior with a new infotainment system, a secondary touchscreen for the climate controls, and more. And late last year, Land Rover swapped out the previous supercharged V6 engine for a new turbocharged inline-six engine. This engine, thanks to a mild hybrid system, is more fuel-efficient while still maintaining a robust amount of power.
For 2020, a new four-cylinder plug-in hybrid powertrain (Land Rover calls it the PHEV or P400e) is available. It produces about 400 horsepower, and Land Rover says it can travel 22 miles in EV mode before the gas engine kicks in. It should be an intriguing pick for prospective owners who do more city driving than adventuring off-road.
While the Range Rover Sport still feels spry, the segment has gotten more competitive recently. The BMW X5 was redesigned last year, and the Mercedes-Benz GLE and the Audi Q8 are all-new. You might even want to check out Land Rover's sleek new Velar. But overall, we think the Range Rover Sport manages to be pretty compelling against this fresh batch of rivals.
2020 Land Rover Range Rover Sport trim level differences
The 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Sport is a midsize luxury SUV offered in five main trim levels: SE, HSE, HST, Autobiography and SVR. Five-passenger seating is standard, and a power-folding third row that boosts capacity to seven passengers is available on all trims except the HST, models with the plug-in hybrid powertrain and the SVR. Compare the 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Sport trim levels in-depth.
Which Range Rover Sport trim does Edmunds recommend?
Though packed with desirable features, the SE doesn't offer much in the way of customization. Available feature packages and stand-alone options are limited for this base model. We think it's worth paying a little extra for the HSE. It comes with two of the SE's packages, plus a few more features that luxury buyers should expect. It also opens the door to a pair of alternate powertrains — the P400e plug-in hybrid and P525 supercharged V8, along with an expanded list of optional features.

2019 Land Rover Range Rover Sport HSE 4dr SUV 4WD (3.0L 6cyl S/C 8A)
Just purchased a brand new 2019 Range Rover sport and the car has had a complete electrical/ system failure. Tried to start the car and nothing works. We had the car towed and the dealer has no solution except to wait until corporate engineering finds a solution. The car has been at the dealer for a while now and others have been affected for over a month with no solution or fix on the … horizon. From what we have learned this seems to be a much larger issue.

Now in service 4th time and they said that all this model cars in the world will be recalled for new hybride software that will be ready at the end of September 2020. 3 mo ths after buying a new very expensive car, still stuck to service and my lowyer has been dealing with … manufacturer. UNRELIABLE CAR!!!!!

2020 Land Rover Range Rover Sport P400e HSE 4dr SUV 4WD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo gas/electric plug-in hybrid 8A)
If all you had to do was look at this beauty in the parking lot or sit in it, it would be fabulous...unfortunately, you also have to drive it and that's where the romance ends.
I purchased a P400E, the plug in hybrid, which purports the ability to select a "full electric" drive setting. Despite selecting this drive mode, the car has never driven under full electric at any time. … Typically, only 25% of any trip is under electric power when selecting the "full electric" "EV" position. Land Rover has tried to explain the car has "certain algorithms" that force it into gas engine mode. While I agree that my Volvo PHEV also turns on the engine for a short burst if I accelerate hard, it turns it off fairly quickly and returns to full electric mode. This cannot be said for the Range Rover Sport which seems to turn on the engine randomly in addition to a hard acceleration.
Black screens. The Sport's two center information panels also have a mind of their own turning themselves off at will. Occasionally, the screens reset themselves after a few minutes at other times, one must turn off the car to reset them. Additionally, under normal operation, they are slow to respond making access very clunky.
Back up camera. Another feature that works about 90% of the time, but when you spend 90K for a vehicle, you would expect something 100% reliable.
Other issues...throttle response inconsistent, parking brake occasionally activates by itself at when leaving a parking space, electric plug sometimes does not release (locking and unlocking the car a couple of times usually fixes it).
Bottom line, pass on this vehicle. If you are really need this brand, skip the Sport as I know other people that have returned theirs due to similar electronic gremlins. If you're looking for an SUV PHEV that works, try the Volvo.
DO NOT PURCHASE THIS CAR!!!

2019 Land Rover Range Rover Sport HSE Dynamic 4dr SUV 4WD (3.0L 6cyl S/C 8A)
I bought this car in March of 2019. I really loved the look and was excited about having a luxury vehicle for the first time. This car almost cost my daughter and I our life. Within months of owning the vehicle this car stopped without any warning in the middle of a five lane highway. The car completely locked up. I couldn’t even shift the gears. Cars were speeding up on us and my … daughter was screaming from the back. I called 911, but it took the police a half hour to arrive because of the holiday traffic. Once they arrived, it took two tow trucks over two hours to figure out how to unlock the wheels to put it up on the bed. I filed a claim with corporate. The advisor James Rochester said they would review the case and get back with me within 30 days. Almost 60 days later he sends me a letter stating that they were sorry about the inconvenience, but because they fixed it they are denying my claim. It took them two weeks to fix the engine failure and they added 50 miles to the car to make sure it was ok. My car has a warranty and The added mileage was on me. He stated it would have to be a repeat incident and possibly they would reopen my case. They did NOTHING!!! Not even a Reimbursement for the two weeks or the mileage. A repeat case??? I also found out that the engine failure was a recall one month before the purchase of my vehicle. I was never notified!!! I do not recommend ever purchasing a car from Range Rover.
