The 2023 Durango might not appeal to a broad audience, but its performance and practicality are certainly impressive. After all, not many SUVs can hit 60 mph in under 5 seconds and tow up to 8,700 pounds. But what you get in capability you lack in refinement. As well equipped as the Durango might be, you are constantly reminded this is one of the older platforms on the market.

Overview

Dodge was one of the earliest automakers to see the potential of SUVs as family vehicles when the Durango debuted in the late 1990s. Now late in its third generation, the 2023 Dodge Durango competes for your attention among a much greater swath of models, as nearly every automaker has a three-row SUV in its lineup.

There are some high points for the Durango. It has a bolder personality than the average family hauler, and that goes a long way toward making a practical vehicle feel less like an appliance. And when equipped with an available V8 engine — a big contributor to that personality — the Durango is capable of towing small to midsize trailers with ease. But it's also true that this generation Durango has been around for a long time, and its fuel economy and overall design are now behind the times.
For 2023, the Durango will once again be offered in SRT Hellcat guise, with a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 under the hood pumping out 710 hp and 645 lb-ft of torque. The Durango SRT Hellcat debuted in 2021 and was supposed to only be around as a one-year model, but it has been revived to once again blow the top off the Durango's performance ceiling.
Rumors have it that a redesigned Durango is in the works, though it's unclear at this point when it will arrive. In the meantime, the 2023 Durango faces off against all-stars such as the Kia Telluride, Honda Pilot, Hyundai Palisade and Volkswagen Atlas. Read Edmunds' Expert Rating below for our test team's take on what to expect when buying a Durango.

We drove the 2023 Dodge Durango on our test track and on real roads. Our Edmunds team conducts rigorous independent vehicle testing, driving 500,000 miles a year.
Performance
8/10
How does the Durango drive? The Durango SRT, which is what we tested, is a testament to Dodge's commitment to performance. The engine is powerful, accelerating this 5,500-pound behemoth effortlessly to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds. Yet the Durango is also well mannered in everyday driving. Braking performance is strong and smooth.
The transmission's shifts are also buttery smooth and don't feel the least bit abrupt in stop-and-go traffic. Steering and handling are decent for a vehicle of this size and weight, but it does have its limits. Performance and everyday usability are rarely so even.

Comfort
7/10
How comfortable is the Durango? The seats in the Durango for all positions are roomy and comfortable. The first and second rows offer a good amount of legroom, while the third row can easily hold larger kids. The climate control works well with adequate airflow for all three rows.
The Durango SRT's ride, on the other hand, leaves a bit to be desired. While tolerable, it's not going to lull you to sleep on road trips. Road noise is omnipresent and so is the engine but that could be a welcome thing. The exhaust note is intoxicating.

Interior
7.5/10
How’s the interior? The interior is airy and you can see well out of it, but the front and rear pillars can obstruct some visibility in tighter situations. The cabin is straightforward and user-friendly, and the interface for controls is simple to understand and find. Getting in and out of all seating positions, even the third row, is also fairly simple.
Drivers of nearly any size should be able to find a comfortable seating position thanks to the numerous seat and steering wheel adjustments.
Drivers of nearly any size should be able to find a comfortable seating position thanks to the numerous seat and steering wheel adjustments.
Technology
7.5/10
How’s the tech? The Uconnect 4C interface on the 8.4-inch screen, while feeling a bit dated, is user-friendly and syncs up well with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration systems. If you can get the new 10.1-inch screen, which has Chrysler/Dodge's latest infotainment software and features. There are plenty of USB and 12-volt charging options for passengers in all positions.
Driver aids such as adaptive cruise and lane keeping assist are useful, but they are part of an optional Technology Group package. The upgraded Harman Kardon audio system sounds great and is worth getting.

Storage
8/10
How’s the storage? Even with performance as the top priority, the Durango SRT manages to be practical and flexible like an SUV should be. There's 84.5 cubic feet of space with all the seats folded, which places it slightly above the middle of this class. Small-item storage is exactly what you want in a three-row SUV with enough cubbies and cupholders for all passengers. But the party trick for this Durango might be its excellent 8,700-pound tow rating when properly equipped.
Fuel Economy
5.5/10
How’s the fuel economy? Here's a formula for you: SRT = bad mpg. That's just the way it goes. The Durango SRT is rated to get an EPA-estimated 15 mpg in combined driving (13 city/19 highway). On our 120-mile evaluation route, we were able to get 15.5 mpg, indicating that the EPA's estimates are at least realistic. The best fuel economy you can get is a rear-wheel-drive Durango with the V6, which gets 21 mpg combined. That's a lot better but still a tad below rival V6-equipped SUVs.
Value
6.5/10
Is the Durango a good value? What do you want in your SUV? That's what you'll have to ask yourself to define value. If you want luxury and comfort, look elsewhere because that is not what this SUV is about. The interior looks and feels a bit low-buck. But you certainly get your money's worth in performance. Dodge lines up with the rest of the class in warranty and roadside assistance coverage.
Wildcard
9/10
The Durango SRT is a burly, powerful SUV that looks and sounds the part. It's upfront, in-your-face, and shouts at you like a drill sergeant. It doesn't handle all that well but doesn't feel like it loses a step when it's fully loaded with people. Day to day, it's really more fun than an SUV has a right to be.
If you're into making a scene as you arrive and leave, this is the SUV for you. The looks and exhaust note will turn heads. Though it might have more attitude than sense, we can definitely see the appeal.

2023 Dodge Durango trim level differences
The 2023 Dodge Durango is available in six trim levels: SXT, GT, R/T, Citadel and SRT 392 and SRT Hellcat. The Durango is available with either a V6 or one of three V8 engines; all are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive is standard on most trims, though all-wheel drive is available and comes standard on both the Durango SRT 392 and SRT Hellcat.
Which Durango trim does Edmunds recommend?
There are a lot of trims to choose from, but we suggest going with the midtier R/T trim. It comes with the V8 engine plus some welcome additional features and advanced driver aids that might otherwise be optional on the less expensive trims.

Perfect do-anything vehicle

2022 Dodge Durango R/T 4dr SUV AWD (5.7L 8cyl 8A)
I researched vehicles for about a year (looking at 2-door coupes right up to full-size trucks, because I couldn't decide what I needed!) before finally deciding on a Durango, and placing an order for a 2022 R/T Tow-and-Go. I've had it for about four months now, and I am incredibly happy with my choice. Every time I get in the Durango, every time I smash the pedal to the floor, every time … I'm walking up to it in a parking lot, I smile. It has everything I want: aggressive good looks (especially from the front and side, with the SRT-style fender flares and wheels), amazing throaty sound (the Tow-and-Go trim has performance exhaust, and it is music to the ears), good solid performance, ride comfort, utility, etc. It has fantastic road manners, and drives like a much smaller vehicle; you feel very planted on the road, and it loves corners, despite its proportions.
I could go into detail on just about anything on this vehicle, but I'll try to condense it into a pros & cons list for brevity:
Pros:
Amazing sound both in and out of the vehicle; no drone, either!
Great performance – it’s not a Hellcat, but the R/T is no slouch!
Sleek, modern, and comfortable interior – good workmanship and no rattles
Great compatibility with Android Auto & wireless charging
Pretty good stock speakers
Very, very smooth ride – even with the stock run-flat tires
Aggressive good looks
Great pedal feel especially with the Brembo brakes on the TnG
Plenty of utility; tons of trunk space with the third row folded down
I haven’t had a need for it yet, but a huge towing capacity
Cons:
I wished they tuned it for a little higher on the horsepower; other Dodge vehicles with the same motor are rated for an extra 15 HP
Gas mileage isn’t great, but that’s to be expected with a 5000+ pound vehicle with an 8-cylinder motor
Everything else has been updated, but the rear of the vehicle is getting dated and could have used a touch-up
Overall, I love this vehicle. I’m very happy with it, and I can’t say enough good things about it.
Love the Durango… Hate the oil leak!

2023 Dodge Durango R/T Plus 4dr SUV (5.7L 8cyl 8A)
2023 Durango RT Plus Blacktop Edition
I purchased this vehicle 4 Months ago and had it back to the dealership twice now!
The 5.7 engine developed an oil leak at (only 4,500 miles) at the oil filter adapter that attaches to the block.
The dealership replaced it with a new one with new gaskets. Drove it for two weeks with no issues then the other night I smelled oil burning, looked … under the front and the whole bottom side of the engine and transmission are covered in oil.
The adapter started leaking again! Added two quarts oil and drove it to the dealership the next morning. Dealership tried to repair the gasket by using “approved” Mopar sealant and it started leaking again after running 5 minutes.
Now it’s been sitting for two days at the dealership waiting on another new adapter and gaskets.
The dealership replaced the rubber trim on the back drivers door on the outside of the window. The rubber had turned a spotty white/gray looking color.
The dealership also order new exhaust because the right side exhaust tip is pointing inward toward the center of the bumper. It was that way on the showroom floor when I purchased. 4 other Durangos on the lot had the same thing. Awesome quality control at Dodge!!
Update 12/7/2023… After three failed attempts to fix the oil adapter leak, Dodge has granted to replace the whole engine with a new one. They determined the engine block was not milled correctly causing the oil adapter and engine block not to mate evenly which caused the leak after the engine warmed up.
Build date on the Durango is 7-23
Update 4/5/2024, The new engine developed another oil leak after only 4,000 miles on it.
The leak was towards the rear of the engine and Dodge claimed the oil pan gasket failed when the engine was put together at the factory.
We had that repaired and two hours later smelled oil burning on the exhaust and also oil dripping onto the ground in the same area.
Dealership claims it’s now a rear main seal that needs to be replaced along with another oil pan gasket.
As much as I hated too because I’ve always been a Mopar guy, we got rid of this lemon!!
Total mileage on the Durango 12,000 miles.
We traded this Durango on a new Ford Explorer ST and haven’t looked back at Dodge since!!
UPDATE: After the rear main seal was repaired, it was still leaking oil everywhere.
Dodge technicians determined it was again the oil pan gasket. This did not cure the leaking oil.
Dodge determined this new 2nd engine that the engine block wasn’t milled to specs causing the oil pan gasket to leak.
This whole experience has turned me completely away from Dodge and I will never buy another Dodge vehicle ever again!
Traded the Durango for a new 2023 Ford Explorer ST
after I was told I needed a 3rd new engine in only 12,000 miles.
Never had an issue with this Ford Explorer ST and it’s reliable!

2022 Dodge Durango R/T 4dr SUV AWD (5.7L 8cyl 8A)
2022 Durango RT AWD. Excellent driving suv, but would not purchase one until manufacturing gets the UConnect right. Dealership update was worthless and customer service at corporate was terrible. Buy another suv and wait. I regret buying this one everyday and I am stuck with it.
16 months in, 16,000 miles, so far, so good.

2022 Dodge Durango SXT 4dr SUV (3.6L 6cyl 8A)
It makes no sense to read reviews from owners who have had their cars for 2 or 3 weeks. It is far more helpful to get a sense of what the car is like over a year of driving. That being the case, I have had no problems whatsoever with my SXT Durango 2wd drive. In fact, I really like how well it drives, sufficient power, quiet smooth drive. I like the naturally aspirated 6 cylinder and … 8 speed transmission, doesn't seem to hunt and peck for gears, smooth acceleration, and very quiet.
Plenty of room for 6, and small adults can comfortably sit in the 3rd row. Seats are comfortable. The Uconnect works well enough.
Averaging 23.5 mpg, mixed, up to 26 mpg on highway at 65-70 mph, only 23.5 mpg at 75-78 mph.
This SUV has a "middle of the road" exterior design, that some see as dated, but I think it looks great.
Having test driven every midsize 3 row crossover, I found this one drove the best, looked the best, and surprisingly was the least expensive. I do not regret this purchase at all.
We have a limited number of reviews for the 2023 Dodge Durango, so we've included reviews for other years of the Durango since its last redesign.
