Volvo made several updates to the S60 for 2023. The previous Momentum, R-Design and Inscription trims have been renamed and are now Core, Plus and Ultimate. Some features have been reshuffled among the new trim levels. Volvo also introduced Dark, Bright and Black Edition exterior styling packages.
The S60 also receives a new Google-based infotainment system that features Google Assistant (a voice recognition assistant) and Google Maps (a navigation system). Few brands offer this type of infotainment system. Volvo made slight updates to the exterior, the most notable being the hidden exhaust in the rear bumper, and redesigned the overhead console inside.
The S60 isn't normally the first choice for most shoppers seeking a small luxury sedan, but we think it's a compelling and well-rounded alternative to the three Germans that dominate the segment: the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, the Audi A4 and the BMW 3 Series. It's also the only model in this class to offer a plug-in hybrid engine that's not only efficient but very powerful.
2023 Volvo S60 trim level differences
The 2023 Volvo S60 is available in Core, Plus and Ultimate trim levels. The standard B5 engine is offered in either front- or all-wheel drive. The plug-in hybrid Recharge T8 engine option is available in the same trim levels and in the Polestar Engineered performance trim. It comes standard with all-wheel drive.
Which S60 trim does Edmunds recommend?
The midlevel Plus trim offers the best balance of features and price. It includes the long list of features from the Core trim and adds leather upholstery and Pilot Assist, which is an advanced driver aid consisting of adaptive cruise control (maintains a driver-set distance between the Volvo and the car in front) and a lane keeping system (makes minor steering corrections to help keep the vehicle centered in its lane). Parking is also much easier with the Plus trim's surround-view camera system and front and rear parking sensors.

Recalls
5 recalls foundChecking if a car has a recall is simple. Just type the car's VIN number into the NHTSA website (https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls). If there's an unrepaired recall, you'll see it there.
If a recall shows up, just call your local car dealer. They'll know about the recall and will work with the car maker to fix it for free (if the recall happened within 10 years of the car being first sold).

2021 Volvo S60 T5 R-Design 4dr Sedan AWD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 8A)
Love the car’s looks, both exterior and interior. I have read so many complaints about the infotainment system, but I find it easy to navigate. Voice controls also work very well. Most people do not think of Volvo vehicles as fast, and they sure look surprised when you easily pull quickly away from an aggressive driver on the freeway! The car handles well and is fun to drive and … relaxing at the same time. The suspension is just a little firm, but not jarring, and the seats are amazingly supportive and comfortable. I am unsure still about the long term reliability of the vehicle, but so far, all is well.

2021 Volvo S60 T6 R-Design 4dr Sedan AWD w/Prod. End 11/20 (2.0L 4cyl Twincharger 8A)
This is my third Volvo (a 1980 242GT and 2012 S60 T6 R-Design) and my wife is on her fourth. I grew up driving Volvos in Canada as my Dad had a P1800 and as a teen and in my early 20's I drove my Mom's 544 and P130 Amazon. I took delivery of my 2021 T6 R-Design S60 in Pebble Grey Metallic with Slate interior 3 months ago. This car is absolutely loaded with every available option … including the Bowers & Wilkins audio system and the Polestar Engineered software upgrade and I couldn't be happier. I am in my late 60's but raced motorcycles and was an amatuer ski racer when I was young so I prefer a car that goes and handles yet is comfortable and has all the tech toys and this Volvo delivers. I have had an Audi S4 that was faster and louder as well as a Lincoln MKZ with a twin turbo 400 hp V6 that was faster too. I considered several comparable BMWs, Mercedes-Benz and Genesis cars but felt the Volvo would be the best combination of doing everything well and I haven't been disappointed. I was pleasantly surprised by the increased performance the Polestar option gives the car, with an increase to 330 hp and torque to 325 as well as a nice little rumble from the exhaust. I live in Western NY and usually drive several weekends a month to Canada to visit family as well as a trip to FL in the spring. Because of COVID-19 that isn't happening just yet but can't wait for some long trips as that's when the Volvo really shines. Pros include the gorgeous looks of the car both inside and out, the Bowers & Wilkins sound system is absolutely the best I have heard in a car, overall sporty handling, comfort and the standard level of security you get from a Volvo. The touchscreen system may be a little different at first but you get onto it very quickly and it is actually very intuitive. A couple of minor cons; at this level I would like to see approach lighting and a power tailgate (which I believe is available on other models as it's on my wife's XC60.) All in all, I absolutely love this car. I am glad that Geely hasn't messed with what a Volvo has been famous for and I think they have hit the ball out of the park with this one. If you are in the market for a great sports luxury sedan and want something you won't see at every stoplight, it deserves a look.

2021 Volvo S60 T5 Momentum 4dr Sedan (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 8A)
I've had the 2021 Volvo S60, momentum, for several months. This is a tremendous vehicle, the interior is insanely great, minimalist with enormous premium appeal. There's also several technology features that are far more impressive than similar level models from different brands. I have the Harmon/Kardon sound system and I wouldn't cheap out on anything less, the sound is unbelievable … and it's a huge part of the appeal/enjoyment of the car. I've had zero issues with reliability, Volvo as a brand has made strides over the past few years ensuring reliability comes first. It's very fun to drive but also took it on a 300+ road trip and was able to do 38+ MPG on ECO mode. Lastly, don't let those who drove the car once complain about the touchscreen usability, it took me 3 or 4 days to get used to it, just like any car and it's wonderful to use. I'd argue the 15 million buttons on a BMW or comparable brand is far more confusing and ultimately useless compared to having the touch screen command center in this car.
I'm new to Volvo, but if this car continues to be as solid as it has been the last few months, I'm likely going to be a Volvo customer for years to come.
T8 R-Design Expression

2021 Volvo S60 Recharge Plug-In Hybrid T8 R-Design Expression 4dr Sedan AWD (2.0L 4cyl Twincharger gas/electric plug-in hybrid 8A)
First the things I wish were different. The lack of wireless charging and automatic closing trunk are odd. You just expect those. The infotainment screen is small-ish, and the navigation system can be a little clunky. A holder for sunglasses is $72(?). I'd like firmer brakes. Now the good stuff. My car has the Polestar Optimization upgrade; I highly recommend it. In everyday … driving, I get about 25 miles of all electric range without stomping the accelerator. That is plenty for my ~9 mile commute (one-way). The interior is plush; nearly every surface feels like the highest quality. While other manufacturers weren't willing to deal (summer 2021 car shortage), Volvo offered many incentives and 1.99% financing. Plus, you get a $5600 federal tax credit for this plug-in hybrid. I hoped to get a true R-Design rather than "Expression" version, but I couldn't find any in a reasonable distance. But the Premium and Advanced packages, plus the Polestar Optimization, got me nearly the same car. The difference is the true R-Design's firmer suspension.
We have a limited number of reviews for the 2023 Volvo S60, so we've included reviews for other years of the S60 since its last redesign.
