Major mechanical problem after 2 months

2024 Volvo XC40 B5 Ultimate Bright 4dr SUV AWD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo gas/electric mild hybrid 8A)
I have a brand new XC40 which experienced a major mechanical problem. My car had to be towed to the dealership 2 days ago. I do not have a final diagnosis or remedy and am told that may take another week. But I do know that the problem is serious and "never happens" and was called a "major fault". Reliability was my number one concern buying a new car - I had my previous car over 10 … years. I have never had to have my car towed for mechanical problems. Needless to say, this is very disappointing. I like the look of the car and some of the features and thought I was purchasing a long term reliable vehicle. The other negatives I would say are the head restraint position causes a lot of discomfort on longer drives. It is positioned too far forward for me, and I did not know this when just test driving the car. I was trying to resolve this with different pillows with no real solution yet. And I believe the car would be improved by more physical buttons such as for more of the climate control features. You have to use the infotainment screen, and it is difficult when driving to make simple changes like the temperature or fan speed. The google voice controls don't have all of the options you may want, and the voice controls don't always do what you say. My infotainment system has shut down and rebooted twice while I was driving. When this happens, you lose access to everything controlled through the infotainment system. I don't know what is causing this glitch. The car has good performance when driving - it's quick enough and a good drive. But these problems right now are overshadowing my experience with the car. This is a brand new car with 1,300 miles. These problems should not be part of a new car owner's experience.

Picked up the car on a Saturday, emissions light pops up 2 days later. Needed some type of valve replacement; also turns out there is a software brake recall...really? Spent 3 days at the service location, no loaner provider. Got it back, 2 days later, emissions light indicator back on, schedule to go back for service. Level of frustration is unsurmountable, think twice and then think … twice some more.

2023 Volvo XC40 B4 Plus Bright 4dr SUV (2.0L 4cyl Turbo gas/electric mild hybrid 8A)
I have only owned this brand new Volvo xc40 2023 for three months and it has been in the shop for 29 days and counting. The IHU (radio) has been replaced. That replacement has been “fixed” once and it is now in the shop with the same issue- the IHU shuts down and this time with a warning not to drive the vehicle. The IHU is the hub that controls everything from the climate control to … the phone to the radio and navigation. It’s a big deal when it fails. There are other issues as well. The car shuts off if you open the door while it’s in park, the driver’s seat sometimes moves on its own and twice after turning off the ignition, I got a warning upon opening the door that the engine was still running (it was not). You might say I have a lemon (and I’m sure I do), but I’m also not confident that other Volvos won’t have similar problems. I would steer clear of a 2022 xc40.

2024 Volvo XC40 B5 Ultimate Dark 4dr SUV AWD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo gas/electric mild hybrid 8A)
I own a 2020 Volvo XC40 T4 R-Design that came fully loaded when I purchased it used with only 25K miles. It was a dealer’s lease vehicle so maintenance records were pristine. I have had a 2024 XC40 B5 Ultimate as a loaner from the dealer. I could not help but compare this vehicle with the 2020 edition. Pros for the 2024: The electric motor makes restart in Eco mode totally smooth and … transparent to the driver. Control for auto start/stop to conserve fuel is no longer available. Cons • Google interface is inferior in many ways to Volvo’s Sensus. First, the text labels with the Google interface are small and more difficult to navigate as a driver. Second, the Google interface is more complicated with many more sub-menus to navigate. Third, the 12 inch display does not provide as much useful info at a glance as the Sensus system. Fourth, drive modes are down from 4+ on 2020 to 2 on the 2024. And last, most of the software bugs are ironed out in my 2020 model whereas the Google system will need more time for users to report bugs that will need to be squashed. • The “get-up-and-go” with the 2020 model has “gone” in the 2024 model. The throttle response of my 187HP 2020 is so much better than the more powerful 2024 that I could not image buying the newer model. • Braking the 2024 takes more pedal pressure than the 2020 model, and the contrast is noticeable immediately. Now I had to get used to the brakes on my 2020, and having different settings through the Sensus system software helped me adapt to the XC40. That option is gone on the 2024. • The ride in the 2024 B5 Ultimate was noisier and not as comfortable as my 2020. This was very surprising given that my is a FWD vehicle with the “sportier” suspension that comes with a R-Design. I admit that ride comfort and quietness was substantially improved on my 2020 R-Design by swapping out the OE Pirelli’s for Michelin CrossClimate2’s. That’s an highly recommended upgrade for ride comfort and stopping distance, especially in wet or snowy road conditions. One final comment regarding the 2024 B5 vs the 2020 T4. The B5 is a AWD vehicle that requires premium fuel and will probably “eat tire treads” more rapidly than the FWD vehicle. That’s been my experience with another AWD vehicle, and in our climate, we just do not need AWD. On demand 4WD is fine except for the increased costs associated with servicing the differential. The T4 will run on 87+ octane gas; Volvo recommends 89 octane or higher for best gas mileage and performance. With Volvo’s recommended fuel for my T4 and with tweaking the performance using Sensus to customize the drive mode, I consistently get 27 MPG around town and 33+ MPG on road trips. I have experienced gas mileage as high as 39 MPG on the highway with worn Pirelli tires, but the aggressive pattern of the Michelin CrossClimate2 tires has reduced highway mileage to 33-36 MPG depending upon weather conditions and speed. Personally, I love the 2020 XC40 that I drive. I chose it over the small luxury options from BMW, Mercedes, and Cadillac because it simply meets my needs with all the luxury touches and safety that one expects with Volvo.
