A luxuriously equipped pickup truck capable of triple-digit off-road speeds might seem like a rich person's fantasy, but the Ram TRX makes that fantasy come true. With 702 horsepower from a supercharged V8 engine and a trick off-road suspension, the TRX just begs for open land and an empty horizon. The price of entry is certainly steep, but if you value continent-crossing capability, without using asphalt, the TRX is your ticket.Read full review

- TRX-specific suspension is effective for both off-roading and on-pavement comfort

- Reduced towing and payload capacity compared to a regular Ram 1500
- Fuel economy that only an oil executive will love
What's new
- The turbodiesel engine option has been discontinued
- TRX gets Final Edition package, featuring new paint options, extra equipment and unique interior detailing
- Part of the fifth Ram 1500 generation introduced for 2019
Overview
Full-size pickup trucks are the best-selling vehicles in the U.S., making this segment one of the most competitive. The 2024 Ram 1500 is one of the best choices in the class, with plenty of models to choose from and a unique rear suspension design that results in a very comfortable ride. This year, the Ram 1500 loses its more fuel-efficient diesel engine option but you can still have the stout V8 that can tow up to 12,750 pounds. If you have your heart set on a V8-powered Ram, it would be best to act now. The upcoming 2025 redesign drops the tried-and-true V8 engines for turbocharged inline six-cylinder units. There will also be an electric Ram with a range-extending gasoline engine.

Edmunds spotlight: Ride quality
In 2009, the full-size Ram pickup (still under the Dodge banner at the time) made a bold move away from a traditional leaf-spring rear suspension in favor of a more modern coil-spring setup. The old leaf springs may have been inexpensive and durable, but ride quality suffered, especially when the bed was unloaded or traveling over choppy roads. The new coil springs deliver a noticeably smoother ride and improve off-road performance. Fifteen years later, the 2024 Ram 1500 remains the only truck in the class with this suspension and it's one of the main reasons why it deserves consideration.
Competitors to consider
The 2024 Ram 1500 ranks a close second to the Ford F-150. They're close enough that personal preference could legitimately decide between them, though the F-150's available hybrid powertrain is more efficient and versatile. Toyota's recently redesigned Tundra is also a worthy alternative, but its roster is much smaller, leaving you with fewer midrange trim choices. The Ram's advantage is most noticeable against the Chevrolet Silverado's ride quality and in other areas that we point out in our Expert Rating.
What’s it like to live with?
Edmunds is in a unique position to review the Ram 1500 because we went out and bought one to add to our long-term test program. Our 2019 model was the first year of the current generation, but many of our impressions still apply. We cover everything, from fuel economy to comfort and capabilities. Read all about it here.

Rated for you by America's best test team.Performance
8.5/10
How does the Ram 1500 TRX drive? The TRX's supercharged V8 makes enough power to spin the front tires from a dead stop. At our test track it ripped from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.2 seconds. That's just as quick as a Dodge Challenger Hellcat Redeye we also tested. The accompanying thunderous exhaust and supercharger whine are just the icing on the cake. But the TRX doesn't have to be driven flat out to be enjoyed. It's more than happy to dawdle around town until you get a chance to turn it loose down a sandy wash.
The TRX has been blessed with fairly competent brakes. At our test track, they were capable of hauling the big truck down from 60 mph in only 130 feet. That's a shorter stopping distance than the previous-generation Ford Raptor and considerably shorter than the Jeep Rubicon 392. Due to its sheer size, we wouldn't recommend taking the TRX down a tight and narrow road, but the TRX was predictable and consistent in our handling tests.
As for the TRX's off-road capability, if you prioritize low-speed rocky adventures you might want to look elsewhere. With impressive ground clearance and sophisticated long-travel off-road suspension, the TRX is purpose-built for high-speed off-road fun. Only the Ford Raptor is any real competition.

Comfort
8/10
How comfortable is the Ram 1500 TRX? For a truck capable of triple-digit speeds across open country, the Ram 1500 TRX is impressively comfortable. The ride quality, thanks to the giant sidewalls and compliant suspension, is rarely upset by a poor road. At freeway speeds, the Sport setting helps keep the TRX tied down. Even after a long day of bombing around the desert, the TRX is a great truck to drive home.
The Ram 1500's climate control also works well to keep you comfortable, even in triple-digit heat. Our only real gripes stem from an exhaust system that drones at highway speeds and seats that, as comfortable as they are, could use more support for off-road driving.

Interior
8.5/10
How’s the interior? The Ram TRX crew cab's interior is well turned out and matches what you expect to get with a truck of this price. The doors open wide to make it easy to get in, and all four doors have their own chunky and well-positioned grab handles. Just be aware the TRX takes a bit more of an effort to climb into its taller cab.
Passengers in any seat will find plenty of headroom, legroom and shoulder room. The cabin is spacious, and no sacrifices have been made from the standard Ram to its TRX conversion. Although the rearview mirror is a bit small, the Ram's large windows and larger exterior mirrors make changing lanes a bit less stressful. The optional surround-view camera system is worth the money because the TRX is wider and bulkier than a more run-of-the-mill Ram 1500.

Technology
8/10
How’s the tech? The 12-inch touchscreen is a dazzling addition to any vehicle, let alone a pickup truck, and it looks right at home in the TRX's upscale and sporty interior. Multiple USB and USB-C ports, plus Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, are standard. The graphics are clear and easy to read with a quick glance. The optional Harman Kardon audio system is a little bass-heavy but otherwise worth the asking price. Wireless charging is part of an expensive option package, but there are plenty of power options in the TRX.
Only automatic emergency braking is included as standard with the TRX. Adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assistance, and blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic warning are available as options.

Towing and Storage
8/10
How are the towing and storage? Beneath all the TRX's wild off-road capability is still a Ram 1500. And that means the interior is filled with generous and thoughtful storage options for all passengers. The large center console has ample room for both front passengers, and the rear is easily adept at carrying smaller belongings or large items you'd rather not put in the bed.
Planning on towing? The TRX is rated for up to 8,100 pounds when properly equipped. That's enough for a decent-sized trailer and similar to what the Ford F-150 Raptor can tow. But know that the truck's off-road-oriented suspension ultimately limits what you can pull compared to a regular Ram 1500. Also, the TRX's maximum payload capacity of 1,360 pounds is lower too. Finally, the elevated ride height of the TRX can make loading heavier objects in the bed harder to do.

Fuel Economy
6.5/10
How economical is the Ram 1500 TRX? You can't expect a 702-hp, desert-conquering full-size pickup truck to get anything resembling decent fuel economy. The EPA estimates the TRX will get 12 mpg combined, and that's what we recorded in our real-world evaluation route. That was also the one and only time we saw double digits on a tank of fuel. To offset its abysmal mileage, the TRX does come with a 33-gallon fuel tank. That should ensure a few hours of off-road fun before the need to track down a gas station.
Value
7/10
Is the Ram 1500 TRX a good value? Most truck buyers don't need the serious off-road capability of the TRX so the starting price of $70,000 might seem a bit steep. But for those who live for the weekends and love to play in the desert, the asking price for the TRX won't seem that excessive. Our fully equipped test truck stickered at nearly $88,000. A fully loaded Ford Raptor is similarly priced.
Build quality looks to be strong, with positive-feeling switchgear, lots of faux suede, and nice attention to detail. But after spending time in our long-term Ram 1500 Laramie, some parts failures and panel inconsistencies began to reveal themselves. So unfortunately we've had to pull back some of the glowing praise we once had for the Ram lineup.
Warranties are fairly standard with three years/36,000 miles of bumper-to-bumper and five years/60,000 miles of powertrain coverage. Roadside assistance is also guaranteed for five years/60,000 miles.

Wildcard
9.5/10
Everything about the TRX just shouts capability and fun. But it's more than just a weekend toy, and it can do the day-to-day slog as well as get you to your favorite off-road playground with a high degree of comfort. It is a bit big for most parking lots and back roads, but if you've got an endless desert horizon and a full tank of gas, there's nothing better.
Which 1500 does Edmunds recommend?
Deciding on a TRX largely comes down to whether you want one stock (which is still very well equipped) or loaded up with even more options. Or you could think of it this way: How much do you want to spend?

Ram 1500 vs. Ford F-150
The Ford F-150 remains our favorite full-size pickup truck and has been awarded Edmunds Top Rated status. That said, the Ram 1500 comes in a very close second place and we're confident shoppers will find both very capable for a variety of needs. Both come in a wide range of trim levels, but the F-150's hybrid powertrain gets slightly better fuel economy than the Ram 1500's.
Ram 1500 vs. Toyota Tundra
The Toyota Tundra gets high marks for its overall comfort and easy-to-use infotainment system. We also like the potent hybrid powertrain that returns equally impressive fuel economy. As is the case with the Ram 1500, the Tundra is offered in trim levels that range from basic to downright luxurious, but the Ram's lineup offers more choices in between.
Ram 1500 vs. Chevrolet Silverado 1500
Despite several recent updates and improvements, the Chevy Silverado 1500 and the related GMC Sierra 1500 trail its rivals in this very competitive class. While these GM trucks are offered in a wide range of variants with several powertrains to choose from, the ride quality is noticeably rougher, especially when the bed is unloaded. The ZR2 off-road model also falls short of the mark set by competing all-terrain trucks.
