The 2022 Lexus GX 460 is a bit of a mixed bag. It's as solid and well built as ever, but parts of it are almost comically old despite updates over the years. And while the engine is strong and smooth, the braking is poor. Other luxury SUVs have surpassed the GX 460 in almost every way.

Overview

These days you won't find many SUVs with true go-anywhere credentials, but the Lexus GX 460 is one happy exception. With its body-on-frame construction and full-time four-wheel-drive system with low-range gears, the Lexus GX can handle just about any terrain you can throw at it.

Although having off-roading chops is a plus in our book, you need more than that to succeed as a luxury SUV. The GX lacks the on-road refinement of more modern competitors like the Land Rover Discovery and Mercedes-Benz GLE, and its V8 engine is thirsty and underpowered. Another major shortcoming is its inadequate cargo area (particularly when the third-row seats are in place). But if you're looking for a rig that will pamper you on the trails, the Lexus GX 460 could be for you. Learn more about the 2022 GX 460's pros and cons by reading our test team's Expert Rating.

We drove the 2022 Lexus GX 460 on our test track and on real roads. Our Edmunds team conducts rigorous independent vehicle testing, driving 500,000 miles a year.
Performance
6.5/10
How does the GX 460 drive? The Lexus GX 460 has much going for it but stumbles in key areas. In routine use around town, the GX can feel lethargic owing to its heavy curb weight and an economy-minded throttle pedal and transmission calibration. Emergency braking performance is also disappointing. The stopping distance from 60 mph, despite improving by quite a bit this year, is still the worst in class at 133 feet. Thankfully, low-speed handling maneuvers are easy due to its tight turning circle and light steering effort.
The GX has decent on- and off-road handling, but its steering is lifeless and numb. As for going off-road, the GX 460 has a low-range transfer case and a lockable center differential, and the suspension system (KDSS) automatically generates impressive wheel articulation. But ground clearance isn't great, and the overhangs are low. It will be a good choice for second owners willing to add expedition bumpers and a lift kit.

Comfort
7/10
How comfortable is the GX 460? The Lexus GX 460 is supremely quiet, and the ride is generally smooth without being floaty or buoyant. But ripples and patches in the asphalt often create a mild jostling motion that your passengers might find uncomfortable. Also make sure you test out the seats before you sign on the dotted line. Everyone is different, but our entire staff disliked the seats due to the plank-like seat bottoms in all seating positions.
The climate control system's layout is dated, but to its credit, it works exceptionally well. The front seats are heated and ventilated, and the second-row seats are heated. All three rows have air vents, and those in the second row have their own climate controls.

Interior
8/10
How’s the interior? The Lexus GX has a dated-looking interior layout, but it functions well. There's generally abundant space, and a good driving position is easy to find. The high seating position gives a commanding view of the road, but it makes the step up a bit higher than in newer SUVs.
The available parking assist makes maneuvering this vehicle in tight parking areas a breeze, as do the vehicle's excellent sight lines. The exterior mirrors are appropriately sized and welcome in both on- and off-road situations.

Technology
6.5/10
How’s the tech? Even with a larger screen and the addition of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for 2022, there's simply no escaping that the GX 460's tech features look and feel outdated. From the last-generation map graphics to the unforgivably awkward trackpad controller and antiquated driver assistants, the GX is a technological disappointment. On top of that, many off-road apps found in other luxury SUVs (angle indicators, multiple camera angles, terrain management) are either not available or are exclusive to an option package on the top trim.
Storage
7/10
How’s the storage? The second and third rows of seats may fold flat into the floor, but cargo capacity isn't class-leading. The load deck of this traditional body-on-frame SUV is somewhat high, so anyone of smaller stature will struggle to load heavier objects. The swing-out rear door blocks curbside access. Maximum towing capability is listed at 6,500 pounds, but the tow hitch and wiring are dealer-installed accessories and not factory-integrated.
Fuel Economy
5/10
How’s the fuel economy? In this day and age, even larger SUVs can be somewhat fuel-efficient. The GX's rating of 16 mpg combined (15 city/19 highway) is not good, and our GX 460 test vehicle hovered around those figures, which makes it pretty terrible.
Value
7/10
Is the GX 460 a good value? The GX 460 oozes quality in terms of materials and workmanship. But the interior looks the better part of a decade old. While the simplicity and layout might appeal to some buyers, most everyone else will likely be put off by the lack of modernity.
Wildcard
6/10
It's about as fun to drive as a boxy truck-based SUV can be, which isn't saying much. It's also far more sophisticated and quiet than you'd expect. But it feels a bit straight-laced, stodgy and as old as the hills. Its time has passed.

Great SUV

2022 Lexus GX 460 4dr SUV 4WD (4.6L 8cyl 6A)
Some say it’s dated. For me it’s perfect. V8 power, tried and true, full time 4wd, 6500 pound towing capacity, body on frame. It’s been a pleasure to own, no problems, zero. Build quality, paint, interior, all great. This is a quality vehicle that will give you many years of service. Update 10/22. The GX has been perfect with zero issues. Still drives new and no rattles. Interior still … looks new. Still feeling good about this purchase! Update 4/20/23
Just passed 70,000 miles. Had the front brakes done along with the scheduled maintenance. No issues at all to report. The GX still runs and drives as new, with not a squeak or rattle. The paint and interior are still great and I get compliments on it. The phone companies recently phased out 3G and it affected some of my telematics, which is disappointing, because Lexus is not offering any repair/updates to upgrade the truck to 4G. These are great vehicles and if your looking at a used one buy a 2019 or newer, which have 4G. Update 10/20/23: no issues to report. I just got back from an extended trip to several states. She was loaded down but performed well in the mountains. For a 2016 with 81,000 miles to still be as tight and rattle free is impressive. I will look at the all new 2024, but it may be out of my price range. These are great vehicles.
Update: 4/24. The GX is still running perfect. No issues to report. Paint and interior still holding up very well. I use F11 Pro on the paint and get compliments on the truck all the time. No squeaks or rattles. I’m not sure you can buy a better built or more reliable vehicle. Update: 10/24 still going strong at 92,000 miles. Zero problems of any kind. Still runs and drives like new. Having a hard time deciding to keep it or trade it. When you hit 100,00 miles, you take a pretty good hit on resale. If I keep it much longer, I may just drive it until it acts up. That could be a while, I have a friend that has one with 328,000 miles. He drives it every day. Update: 4/25 Just had 4 new tires put on my GX. The SUV now has 97,000 miles on it and is running perfectly. Zero issues, as usual. I take it to the Lexus dealer for all routine maintenance, and keep all of that up to date. I usually trade vehicles before 100,000 miles, but after driving several SUV’s and thinking it over, I’m keeping this one for now. I’m still concerned about the V6 issues Toyota/Lexus is having with new engine that replaced the V8’s in new trucks and SUV’s, including the GX550. I just couldn’t find anything I was willing to trade for, because I really like what I have. In 2 weeks I will be heading north for an extended trip in it, and have absolutely no concerns. At this stage of my life, reliability means a lot to me and I have it with this vehicle.
It has flaws, but everything else is awesome

2022 Lexus GX 460 Luxury 4dr SUV 4WD (4.6L 8cyl 6A)
MPG is not great, tech is okay with Apple Car Play, but that’s not really the point of this vehicle….. this is a very rugged and luxurious SUV. It really is the Japanese G Wagon. The styling stays pretty much the same year after year and it’s near timeless. Safety is incredible and off road capabilities are as good as any 4x4 Jeep or truck if not better. Very hard to beat the value.

2022 Lexus GX 460 4dr SUV 4WD (4.6L 8cyl 6A)
I watched and read many reviews on this vehicle and eventually purchased one with the Premium trim. First off, it's a body-on-frame vehicle and it drives like that - I like it, some may not. On the stock tires, the ride is pretty smooth. Even over rough roads and bumps - did I mention it's a body-on-frame SUV...The V8 is responsive - not incredibly quick but strong enough. I get 17.5 mpg … on mixed driving. Every review mentions that it has an ancient engine and transmission. Other than the gas mileage, it performs well and it's bulletproof. If you're looking for a proven vehicle that can handle the rough stuff and comfortably tackle the daily drive, this is a great choice.
love my 2021 gx 460 premium w/ sport package

2021 Lexus GX 460 4dr SUV 4WD (4.6L 8cyl 6A)
Don't listen to negative reviews, i was shopping around Range rovers, Mercedes suv and this Lexus Gx since i drove a GS 350 which was bulletproof reliable. The range rovers have awful reliability complaints, mercedes are nice but don't hold their value well so i went to Lexus and test drove this 2021 Gx with sport pack and fell in love. The infotainment system is plain but works and im … getting 14.5-16.5 mpg in city and 19-20 mpg in hwy which is not bad for a v8. Love the triple beam headlights ! it makes it look almost like a new bodystyle Gx even though its a refresh. This car with the sport package, 19 inch black wheels and white paint exterior turns heads. I was looking at 2020 pre owned and they are almost same price as the deal i got on new one, these hold value very well so you won't have to be thousands upside down when its time to trade like a range rover junk or mercedes and on top of that its bulletproof reliable !
Today is 3/1/22 and i still feel the same about my GX , great vehicle and such a mean looking presence with the sport package when i drive or see another on the road :)
