2022 Honda Pilot Review
Pros
- Versatile and roomy interior
- Smooth and compliant ride in most conditions
- Better fuel economy than most rivals
- Many clever storage compartments
Cons
- Collision warning and adaptive cruise control are overly sensitive
- Third-row access is narrow
- Higher starting price than many other rival SUVs
What's new
- LX and EX trim levels are no longer available
- Part of the third Pilot generation introduced for 2016
Overview

The 2022 Honda Pilot is one of our favorite three-row SUVs thanks to its spacious, thoughtfully designed interior and smooth ride. Added bonuses include better-than-average fuel economy as well as a smooth, powerful V6 engine. The Pilot pretty much had the class covered until the Kia Telluride and Hyundai Palisade came along and shook things up. It's rumored that Honda's looking to redesign the aging Pilot for 2023 — it's been around in its current guise since 2016 — to put it back on top of this family-friendly class.

For now, though, Honda is tightening the belt by discontinuing the LX and EX, which were previously the Pilot's two most affordable trims. That means the 2022 Pilot lineup starts out with the EX-L. This won't matter much if you were shopping for a nicely equipped SUV to begin with, but budget shoppers will no doubt be put off by the Pilot's higher starting price this year.
Within the three-row midsize SUV class, we think the Palisade and Telluride are still top of the pack. There's also the roomy Volkswagen Atlas and refined Mazda CX-9 to consider. But overall, the Pilot does a lot of things very well and has few major pitfalls. Read our Edmunds Expert Rating below for more.
What's it like to live with?
If you're interested in knowing what it's like to live with a Honda Pilot, check out our long-term test of the Pilot. We tested a Pilot Elite for a year, driving it over 20,000 miles, commuting with it to work, taking it on road trips, and collecting data all along the way. Note that while we tested a 2016 model, most of our reporting still applies to the 2022 Pilot.

Great
8.2
out of 10
We drove the 2022 Honda Pilot on our test track and on real roads. Our Edmunds team conducts rigorous independent vehicle testing, driving 500,000 miles a year.
Performance
7.5/10
How does the Pilot drive? The Pilot is a surprisingly able performer. We tested a Pilot Elite and recorded a 0-60 mph sprint of 7.0 seconds, which is a bit quicker than most rival midsize three-row SUVs. Slowing down is easy too. The brakes have a relatively consistent feel and are easy to use in everyday driving. The Pilot's panic-stopping distance from 60 mph (129 feet in our testing) is average for this class of vehicle.
Twisty mountain roads don't pose a problem for the Pilot — this SUV feels more nimble than most. The steering is precise but offers little feel for the road. The Pilot's available AWD system is fine for slippery road surfaces, but this SUV lacks the ground clearance and specific off-road aids such as hill descent control to make it truly capable off-road.

Comfort
9/10
How comfortable is the Pilot? The Pilot rides comfortably both around town and on the highway. Body motions are well controlled, but not at the expense of overall ride comfort. Small bumps are dispatched without issue. The front seats have supportive backs and bottoms, providing hours of comfort, and the second-row seats are similarly cushy and can recline and slide.
There's very little tire or wind noise inside the cabin, and the V6 sounds pretty good if you wind it out. The tri-zone climate control works well to keep everyone comfortable.

Interior
8/10
How’s the interior? The Pilot exhibits typical Honda efficiency with smart use of space and practical features. The first and second rows are roomy. The third row is big enough for occasional use for adults, but it's not as spacious as the third row in a Kia Telluride or Volkswagen Atlas. Access to the third row is also a bit narrow.
Most drivers will be able to find a suitable seating position, though tall drivers might want a little more steering wheel adjustment. The upright seating position gives the driver a more commanding view out than a Honda Odyssey minivan provides.

Technology
8/10
How’s the tech? Overall, the Pilot's touchscreen system is easy to use. The navigation system responds quickly, and the 10-speaker audio system sounds great. A Wi-Fi hotspot is included on Touring and Elite models, and users with the Honda CabinControl app can connect to the in-car Wi-Fi and control certain things such as rear cabin temperature and music playlists.
As for driver assist features, the Pilot's adaptive cruise control system isn't nearly as smooth in accelerating and braking as the systems in some rival SUVs. It also only works above 20 mph, which is a bummer for drivers stuck in stop-and-go traffic. The lane keeping assist feature works fine on straight roads but can be overly intrusive if the road starts to bend.

Storage
8.5/10
How’s the storage? The Pilot is a useful vehicle when you need to carry a lot of stuff. While cargo room is solid — 16.5 cubic feet behind the third row and a maximum volume of 83.8 cubes with the second- and third-row seats folded — it trails segment leaders. Still, there's generous storage under the load floor, and the space is very usable. The large door pockets and clever, configurable small-item storage within the center console are among the many places to store your things inside the cabin.
There's a really nice amount of space for car seat installations in the second row with good access to the car seat anchors. The rear tether points are on the bottom of the second-row seats and are easy to miss if you don't know where to look. The one-button slide access to the third row helps facilitate seat installation back there.
Want to tow? The AWD Pilot's maximum towing capacity is 5,000 pounds, which matches the capability of most V6-powered three-row SUVs. Front-wheel-drive Pilots are limited to 3,500 pounds.

Fuel Economy
8/10
How’s the fuel economy? The EPA rates the all-wheel-drive Pilot at 22 mpg combined (19 city/26 highway), which is about midpack for three-row SUVs. On Edmunds' 115-mile standardized drive loop, which is made up primarily of highway roads, the Pilot returned 25.2 mpg, indicating that the EPA estimates are realistic.
Value
8/10
Is the Pilot a good value? We tested a fully loaded all-wheel-drive Elite, which is one of the pricier models in the class. However, it provides better comfort, quality feel and a nicer cabin than many competitors, so the price seems justified. The quality of materials and assembly is high for a non-luxury vehicle. The soft-touch plastics on the dash combined with high-gloss trim and matte-finish secondary controls look and feel good.
Basic warranty coverage is for three years/36,000 miles with a powertrain warranty for five years/60,000 miles. These are about standard for the class, as is the three-year/36,000-mile roadside assistance coverage.

Wildcard
8.5/10
Among three-row SUVs, the Pilot comes across as one of the most well rounded. Its appealing combination of power and relatively rewarding handling is rare. It's certainly not sporty, but there's a willingness to change direction that's lacking in similar SUVs, with the exception of the Mazda CX-9. It's also comfortable and offers many conveniences.
2022 Honda Pilot trim level differences
The 2022 Honda Pilot is a three-row midsize SUV that comes in five trim levels: EX-L, SE (or Special Edition), Touring, Elite and Black Edition. The EX-L, SE and Touring models have seating for eight, though second-row captain's chairs — which reduce capacity to seven — are optional on the Touring. The captain's chairs are standard for the Elite and Black Edition trims.
Which Pilot trim does Edmunds recommend?
Now that the entry-level LX and EX trims have been discontinued, the 2022 Pilot's starting price is quite high by class standards. Luckily, the base EX-L packs a lot of features for the money, such as heated front seats, leather upholstery, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone compatibility. Our pick, though, would be the SE (or Special Edition). It's similar to the EX-L but has blacked-out trim and wheels for a more stylish appearance.

2022 Honda Pilot Black Edition 4dr SUV AWD (3.5L 6cyl 9A)
We bought a 2022 Pilot Black Edition in July 2022. The ride, handling, and interior beats the Highlander and Explorer hands down. Then at Christmas . . . after stopping at a light on a highway, the vehicle struggled to accelerate past 25 mph and the steering wheel began violently shaking - with traffic pushing me from behind and honking at me. Check engine light was solid orange. Limped … to the nearest gas station and shut it off for 10 minutes. Drove 20 miles home without incident. Honda dealer called it a "phantom misfire." Said they've had reports of 15 other V6 Hondas (including Passports and Odysseys) with the same problem. They said they found water in the intake manifold and think that may have caused it, but they are not sure. Less than 4 weeks later, it happened again at a busy intersection off an I-94 exit. Loss of power, violent shaking of the steering wheel at 20-25 mph. Brought it back to the dealer. They have no clue. The service manager thinks it may be related to cold weather. Other service tech said there was water in the intake manifold again. But they aren't sure. Mystery problem, with no known fix, and they are crossing their fingers for Honda Tech to figure out a fix. They nonchalantly tell us to keep driving it and simply pull over and stop/start whenever it happens on narrow hwys with traffic buzzing around us. Dealer offered to "help us" by buying it back for $20K less than what we paid for it 6 months ago. Hard pass. Does anyone else have this problem with Honda? I'm not finding much on Google re this issue, but if 15 other people reported the problem to my dealer, this has to be a relatively common problem with newer V6 Hondas. This was my 6th Honda in the past 30 years; I'll never buy one again.

2022 Honda Pilot EX-L 4dr SUV (3.5L 6cyl 9A)
Is the oil pressure switch covered under the powertrain warranty? 39K miles already had to pay for transmission fluid flush at 30K miles because it was kicking at low speed (not covered), now Emission System Problem, engine light on, dealer diagnosed a bad oil pressure switch but WILL NOT COVER IT UNDER THE POWERTRAIN WARRANTY.
UPDATE 08/25/2022
1 day after the dealer charged me to … replace the oil pressure sensor, Emission System Problem showed up again, and now also Transmission System Problem is showing up, car started kicking up at 30MPH and panel flickering.

2022 Honda Pilot Touring 4dr SUV w/Rear Captain's Chairs (3.5L 6cyl 9A)
We got our 2022 pilot touring dec 2021. I want to love it but it has caused us nothing but grief. Flickering navigation screen from day one. It appears like it’s shorting out. Very annoying and should not be happening in a brand new vehicle. Secondly in the cold of winter 3 times went into limp mode turning onto a main highway. Limp mode meaning it loses all power and engine light starts … blinking. Very dangerous and I’m lucky I didn’t get rear ended. Spent a month back in service. Navigation system not fixed and who knows what it will do again next winter when it’s cold again. I don’t feel safe or trust this car in winter…which is half the year in alberta!

2022 Honda Pilot Sport 4dr SUV AWD (3.5L 6cyl 9A)
TL;DR -
Honda sold us a faulty (brand new) car. Within 2 months of purchase, the engine destroyed itself and the subsequent ‘repair’ work has caused new issues to arise. Honda is unreliable, unsafe, and unsupportive — they are blatantly disregarding our safety by refusing our request to replace the car.
___________________
On November 12, 2021 we purchased a brand new 2022 Honda Pilot … at Hendrick Honda of Charlotte. Less than 2 months later, on December 30, 2021, the car dropped a valve 3 hours into a 7 hour road trip, destroying the engine, and stranding us in the dark and cold. We waited 7.5 hours only to hear that there was no timeframe for replacing the engine and weren’t able to pick up our car again for about 2 weeks.
Honda, Hendrick Honda, and Roadside Assistance have not shown any care to rectify the situation. Honda’s mission states that they “are dedicated to supplying products of the highest quality,” but they are not living up to this mission. This car has proven to be risky and faulty but Honda has refused to replace the car.
My family and I are long-time, loyal Honda customers and expected better from Honda. We are disappointed, concerned, and ultimately regret our purchase and loyalty. We bought this car with the promise of reliability, safety, and quality but have received none of this. Honda should be accountable for replacing a faulty product.
We call on them to prove that they really do care about their mission statement.
