2021 Chevrolet Express Review
Pros
- Powerful V8 and diesel engines
- Towing and payload capabilities are near or at the top of the class
Cons
- Less cargo space than many competitors
- No high-roof cargo option
- Dated interior styling
- Poor highway ride compared to unibody rivals
What's new
- 6.0-liter V8 replaced by 401-horsepower 6.6-liter V8 engine
- Optional navigation system no longer available
- Part of the first Express generation introduced for 1996
Overview
For more than 25 years, the Chevrolet Express has maintained the same basic design, providing lots of seating and impressive towing capability. Unfortunately, when you compare it to passenger van rivals, it's clear that the Express has fallen desperately behind the times. The Express (also known as the Express Passenger) uses body-on-frame construction, much like a modern pickup truck, which helps it provide tow ratings as high as 9,600 pounds. Unfortunately, this body-on-frame design also means that the Express has an uncomfortable ride, both on the highway and in the city.

Rivals such as the Ford Transit are much more likable and much more comfortable. The Transit, along with vans including the Nissan NV and the Ram ProMaster, are considerably more modern than the Express. They offer updated interiors, a wider variety of configurations, and high-roof options that will give your passengers the room to walk around between the seats without having to crouch. With the Express, there's no medium or high roof to speak of. An Express might be appealing if you want a highly utilitarian vehicle with room for up to 15 passengers, but we recommend looking at some of the competition first.
2021 Chevrolet Express trim level differences
The 2021 Chevrolet Express comes in both the standard cargo van and the Express Passenger. This review covers the passenger van. In terms of capability, there's the standard 2500 and the heavy-duty 3500, which offers a higher GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating, or the weight of your vehicle plus any passengers and cargo). A longer 3500 extended-wheelbase version offers more space for seats or cargo. The longer wheelbase also means that the 3500 increases seating capacity from 12 to 15 passengers.
Which Express trim does Edmunds recommend?
If you go with the Chevy Express, go with the top trim level: the LT. The LT comes with a number of driver aids such as forward collision alert and lane departure warning, as well as some convenience features including keyless entry and interior carpeting. And if you're looking for maximum towing capability or gross vehicle weight rating, go with the 3500.

2007 Chevrolet Express LS 3500 3dr Van (6.0L 8cyl 4A)
We bought the Chevy van because we wanted a vehicle that could sit 11-12 people, the Dodge Sprinter cost twice as much and doesn't have the towing power. We rented several vans for diferent long distance trips and compared. We have two other vehicles that are Ford and are very happy with them but the Ford Van fell short against the Chevy for handling and safety. The Chevy has way way … less top heavy sway. Ford hasn't updated there van for a while, the chevy rides soo much better and seems to have more interior room. Over-all we liked the Chevy better and decided to buy one. It also has a lot more room behind the rear bench for luggage. We average 12.3 MPG with the 6.0 ltr but can tow anything

2009 Chevrolet Express LS 1500 3dr Van AWD (5.3L 8cyl 4A)
I've been driving several different vans of this model ranging from '06 to '09. The engine has very good power, and the AWD system really helps it grip the road. However, the gas mileage could be better, the best I've ever gotten out of it is 17mpg (on 87 octane gas). I don't like the traction control system, which just shuts off all power for several seconds if you lose traction, this … can be quite unnerving when pulling out on to a busy intersection. I do like some of the features, such as; the on board tire pressure monitors and the oil life %. On the whole, a good van. Only problem I've had was a oil filter gasket leak, which as probably an installation fault by the garage.
I can't get this thing to die!

2007 Chevrolet Express LS 3500 3dr Van (6.0L 8cyl 4A)
I bought this van slightly used for my family of 9. That means that we are tough on a vehicle. Between Hockey practice, Basketball games, park runs and anything else that comes up, we pretty much live in this thing. We now have 413k miles on her. The engine and powertrain have been flawless. The only things that I have had to replace other than tires, oil and windshield wipers are … shocks, brake pads, and a brake booster. The downfall is pretty much everything else. Because we have the classic chevy white, the paint pretty much quit one day and fell off on most of the van. It doesn't seem to rust, but it leaves you looking homeless. We are tough on an interior too. Because we have so much seat time, the seats have not been the best. The good news is that there is plenty of room for 6 car seats with extra space in between. Would I buy this van again? ABSOLUTELY! What would I change if I had the chance? I would get a paint color that doesn't fall off (If you can find one that isn't white. Good luck.)
Love it, but try to find a parking spot.

2006 Chevrolet Express LS 3500 3dr Ext Van (6.0L 8cyl 4A)
I love my 2006 Chevy Express! My only complaint is that I can hardly ever find a parking spot for it. It's very long, and seems much wider than my other cars have ever been. (Suburbans)
