It may have lots of sports-car-like characteristics, but the 2020 8 Series is truly a grand tourer at heart. The base 8 Series Convertible, the 840i, excels at long highway journeys with its well-constructed interior and sublimely comfortable ride. It'll entertain you on a curvy back road and keep up with the competition when you leave a set of stoplights, but this Bimmer simply excels at long-distance comfort.

Cons
- Rear seats aren't of much use
- Styling reduces outward visibility
What's new

Overview
Introduced last year, the BMW 8 Series immediately won us over with its richly detailed cabin, serene ride and spacious accommodations. But its driving dynamics truly floored us. The 8 Series handles better than a vehicle this size ought to, and its twin-turbo V8 pumps out an unyielding amount of thrust. Now, for 2020, BMW has put another engine option under the hood: a turbocharged six-cylinder.

Big luxury sport coupes like the 8 Series just beg for a V8, but there is hope for this new six-cylinder 840i version. We've tested this engine in a bunch of other BMW products, and each time we've come away pleased with its silky smooth power delivery and high fuel economy. The 840i won't offer the pin-you-to-your-seat acceleration of the V8-powered M850i, but BMW says the coupe manages a 4.4-second 0-60 mph time when you opt for all-wheel drive. If these times bear out, the 8 Series would be a bit quicker than some of its V8-powered competition.
With an as-new starting price well under the six-figure mark, the 8 Series now appeals to a wider set of buyers. In its less expensive guise, the 840i provides a more luxurious experience for shoppers who previously would have considered sports cars such as the Porsche 718 Cayman and BMW Z4. The more powerful M850i, meanwhile, offers an ideal grand-touring car experience at a lower price point than rivals such as the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe and Aston Martin Vantage.
Edmunds Expert Rating
edmunds TESTED
by the Edmunds Experts
Good
8.0
out of 10
We drove the 2020 BMW 8 Series on our test track and on real roads. Our Edmunds team conducts rigorous independent vehicle testing, driving 500,000 miles a year.
Performance
8/10
How does the 8 Series drive? With the base six-cylinder engine, the 840i has more than adequate power and the eight-speed automatic transmission delivers smooth, lightning-fast shifts. At our test track, this big, heavy convertible made it from 0 to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds, which is no small feat. Dynamic back-road driving from this big grand tourer is impressive too, with relatively flat cornering and impressive braking performance.
There are a few drawbacks to the base 8 Series Convertible, including heavy but vague steering, poor throttle calibration at slow speeds, and a lack of braking feel. Overall, those are small gripes when you consider the aptitude of this long, weighty convertible.

Comfort
8/10
How comfortable is the 8 Series? The ride quality in the 840i is excellent. The adaptive suspension soaks up almost all road imperfections, and even in Sport mode, it's still smooth sailing. Combine that with one of the quietest cabins in its class, and the 840i begs to be taken on a long road trip. The optional seat comfort package adds front seats that can adjust seat depth, width of bolsters, and lumbar support, all of which make for a very comfortable place to sit for hours on end. The rear seats are a bit less comfortable, but they're adequate for small children — which is expected in this class.
The buttons used for the climate control are a bit confusing at first, but the air conditioning and heated seats work extremely well. The ventilated seats are less impressive, losing effectiveness over a short period of time.

Interior
7.5/10
How’s the interior? The cabin's look and feel are impressive. The primary controls are well placed and require little attention to operate. But with practice, some users might prefer the available gesture controls. Thanks to ample shoulder room, you won't bump your passenger as you swipe to change songs. But there's little room in the back for anyone other than small children. The seats are essentially two nicely upholstered luggage buckets.
The front seats are highly adjustable, so there's no issue finding an ideal position. Visibility is slightly compromised due to the thick pillars, but the standard blind-spot monitoring and surround-view camera system help. Overall, none of these drawbacks are unusual for this class.

Technology
8/10
How’s the tech? The standard audio system is powerful and clear enough that you don't need to bother with the optional (and pricey) Bowers & Wilkins upgrade. Even if you're willing to shell out the extra cash, it doesn't provide excellent sound quality. The infotainment system features a crisp, responsive screen and easy-to-navigate menus. Alternatively, you can use voice controls if you don't want to fiddle with the iDrive controller. The system is quite accurate, but it can be slow to respond because it is cloud-based.
All advanced driving aids work well but some are reasonably priced options. Wireless Apple CarPlay is standard, and BMW says Android Auto capability will — finally — come standard later in the year.

Storage
8/10
How’s the storage? It can be tough to criticize the trunk space in a convertible, but the 840i is neither small nor inexpensive. As such, we expected a bit more efficient use of space. With the top up, the trunk offers a decent capacity of 12.4 cubic feet. That puts it well ahead of a 911 Cabriolet (4.6 cubic feet) and the Lexus LC 500 convertible (3.4 cubic feet).
But all that capacity vanishes if you'd like to put the top down as you need to deploy a trunk divider, which essentially leaves space for two half-full grocery bags. The rear seats do fold for longer items (assuming the top is up), but the opening is quite narrow.
It's much better on the inside, and front passengers will find ample room for their personal effects, especially in the long, padded door pockets. The rear seats do have anchors for car seats, but they're better used for holding bags and jackets.

Fuel Economy
8.5/10
How’s the fuel economy? Fuel economy with the base six-cylinder engine in the 8 Series, at an EPA estimate of 25 mpg combined, is better than average for the class. During our 120-mile evaluation loop, we returned 23.4 mpg. That's a bit disappointing considering our highway-heavy route.
Value
8/10
Is the 8 Series a good value? When you're shopping for a six-figure convertible, you're bound to have high expectations, and the 8 Series delivers. It has premium build quality, along with excellent interior materials. But we would avoid the optional glass controls and a few other price packages, such as the $3,400 sound system and the $5,000 matte paint job on our test car, to bring the cost down.
BMW's four-year/50,000-mile warranty is average for the class, as is its rust warranty for 12 years/unlimited miles. Three years of free maintenance is a bit less common, however, and it helps the 8 Series' score here.

Wildcard
8.5/10
At its heart, the 8 Series Convertible is a road-trip kind of vehicle. It's quiet as a mouse on the highway and comfortable over any surface. And when the roads get twisty, you can still have quite a bit of fun behind the wheel. This convertible also has plenty of get-up-and-go. Looks are subjective, but the 8 Series feels pretty stately whether you're staring at it in a parking spot or cruising down the coast.
2020 BMW 8 Series trim level differences
The 2020 BMW 8 Series is offered in three trims: 840i, 840i xDrive and M850i xDrive. All are available in either a coupe or convertible body style. (There's also a four-door 8 Series Gran Coupe, which is reviewed separately.) Compare the 2020 BMW 8 Series trim levels in-depth.
Which 8 Series trim does Edmunds recommend?
There's nothing wrong with the 840i per se, but the 8 Series really shines with more power. That's why we'd go with the M850i xDrive, even though it costs quite a bit more. The 8 Series is a properly luxurious grand tourer and should have an engine to match. As for options, the Driving Assistance Professional package doesn't cost much money and makes highway cruising easier.

2019 BMW 8 Series M850i xDrive 2dr Coupe AWD (4.4L 8cyl Turbo 8A)
Came from many BMW and other sport/luxury cars, last one was the 650i xdrive. The m850i is a fantastic integration of super powerful sport car and civilized GT touring machine. While expensive, a lot of discounts are available, putting it well below the competition. Totally satisfied!
