The Lexus IS is the automaker's entry-level four-door, and while it might look like a sport sedan, luxury and comfort — the two hallmarks of any Lexus — have been the IS' primary strengths since this generation debuted in 2014. There's always been a lot to like about the IS, but the current generation is in its 11th year of production (an eternity in the automotive space) and is starting to show its age against the far more modern competition. That is why, even in the absence of clear spy photos, rumors are swirling that the 2026 Lexus will be fully redesigned.
Edmunds spotlight: Electrification is inevitable
Currently, the Lexus IS offers the choice of a turbocharged four-cylinder, a naturally aspirated V6, or an old-school V8 engine. We don't foresee a future with the snarling V8, and a return of the V6 is also unlikely. We expect that Lexus will crib some of Toyota's hybrid powertrains for use in the new IS. The path of least resistance would be the 2.5-liter four-cylinder hybrid and the 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder hybrid, both of which are currently used in the Toyota Crown. We believe the IS could be built on a platform that allows for full electrification in the future.
Competitors to consider
Even with drastic changes in store for the Lexus IS, the key competitors will likely remain the BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Audi A5 (previously known as the A4). These competitors offer a bevy of engine and powertrain options, from efficient four-cylinder and six-cylinder engines to fire-breathing performance versions. None of these German sedans shy away from luxury, impressive technology or performance, so the new Lexus IS will have its work cut out.
