With a spacious cabin, expansive cargo capacity and strong Sync 3 infotainment system, the 2022 Edge has a lot to offer people looking for a midsize SUV. Some might find the ride a bit jittery, and the cabin fit and finish on higher trim levels doesn't quite match the near-luxury price. But overall the Edge is a well-executed car that earns its place among the top mainstream SUVs.
2022 Ford Edge Review
Pros
- Plush, well-padded seats
- Plenty of space for passengers and luggage
- Fuel-efficient and performance-oriented engines
- Quiet cabin at highway speeds

- Interior design and control layout are dated
- Visibility hampered by thick roof pillars and blind spots
- Transmission responses are a little slow
- Rides uncomfortably over small bumps and dips
What's new
- Standard all-wheel drive on every model
- Infotainment console now comes with a 12-inch touchscreen
- Minor design changes to exterior and interior
- Off-road-oriented Adventure package for SEL
- Part of the second Edge generation introduced for 2015
Overview

The 2022 Ford Edge is a midsize two-row SUV that slots between the smaller Ford Edge and the three-row Ford Explorer. The Edge has been on sale for a few years now and gets a handful of updates for 2022, including standard all-wheel drive and a new appearance package that brings some of the sporty ST trim's style to other Edge models. It also gets an updated infotainment system with a new 12-inch touchscreen display, bringing it in line with newer Ford models like the F-150 and Mustang Mach-E. We think Ford's latest infotainment system is one of the best around.

The Edge competes in a relatively hot segment. Some of our favorites include the Honda Passport, Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport and Toyota Venza. If you like the Ford's general size but occasionally need a third row, the recently redesigned Kia Sorento is an attractive alternative. The Edge is one of the oldest vehicles in its segment. Despite a handful of worthwhile updates over the years to performance, styling and features, the Edge is feeling its age. That said, it remains viable for its spacious interior and quiet ride, and there are few sporty SUV offerings like the Edge ST at this price.
Edmunds Expert Rating
edmunds TESTED
by the Edmunds Experts
Average
7.6
out of 10
We drove the 2022 Ford Edge on our test track and on real roads. Our Edmunds team conducts rigorous independent vehicle testing, driving 500,000 miles a year.
Performance
7/10
How does the Edge drive? Overall, the turbo four-cylinder engine is up to the task of moving the Edge. At freeway speeds, the acceleration could be better. Its responses are heavily damped, but the thrust it ultimately delivers is generally satisfactory. Our test vehicle did 0-60 mph in 7.5 seconds. Consistently agreeable steering, handling and braking give the Edge good manners even if it won't quicken your pulse.
The transmission shifts smoothly though somewhat excessively at times. This tendency, coupled with a slow-to-respond gas pedal, means the Edge can occasionally take a beat to sort itself out. Engaging the Sport mode can help shorten the delay.

Comfort
8/10
How comfortable is the Edge? The Edge's comfortable front seats offer supportive bolsters and soft leather, but the rear seats are fairly flat and shapeless. The reclining rear seatback is a nice touch, though. The suspension and body dampen out moderate-size bumps in the road pretty well, but smaller bumps and imperfect pavement actually make the Edge feel a little bouncy.
We're more fond of the Edge's quiet cabin, which provides excellent isolation from wind, road and engine noise. The climate control system is capable and quiet with the exception of some odd clicks that you can hear with the radio off.

Interior
7.5/10
How’s the interior? The Edge has a sizable cabin that provides plenty of room for the driver and passengers. The primary controls are pretty intuitive to use, although secondary functions, such as those for the climate system, could be better.
The front doors open wide, making it easy to hop in and out of the front seats, but rear seat access is a little tighter. Ample seat and steering wheel adjustments mean nearly all drivers can find a proper seating position, although forward visibility is hampered somewhat by the broad front roof pillars.

Technology
8.5/10
How’s the tech? The Ford Edge now includes the latest version of Ford's Sync infotainment system. That includes a tall 12-inch touchscreen display. The navigation system is one of the best you'll find in any car today, and the new screen looks crisp and is responsive to use.
Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and a 4G Wi-Fi hotspot come standard. And there are two front USB ports, multiple 12-volt outlets and even an optional 110-volt household-style outlet for keeping devices topped up. Several driver aids — automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning and auto high beams, among them — come standard.

Storage
8/10
How’s the storage? Without the need to package a third row of seats, the Edge offers a cavernous cargo area. There's 39.2 cubic feet behind the second row, among the most generous in the class. You can fold the 60/40-split rear seatbacks quickly, but they don't lie down completely flat.
There are four reasonably accessible car seat points in the back seat that are exposed (no covers to pull back) and three obvious top tethers on the backs of the rear seats. Larger rear-facing and convertible infant seats might be a bit of a squeeze if the front occupants are of above-average height.

Fuel Economy
7.5/10
How’s the fuel economy? The all-wheel-drive Ford Edge with the 2.0-liter engine gets an EPA rating of 23 mpg combined (21 city/28 highway). We matched the EPA's 23 mpg on our 115-mile evaluation route.
Value
7.5/10
Is the Edge a good value? Buyers perceive value in different ways, but the Edge should rank high with people who prioritize comfort, technology and active safety. The base Edge with its 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder stacks up well against most competitors and offers a generous set of standard features.
It's competitive with most midsize SUVs in warranty coverage, and it offers longer roadside assistance than some other vehicles. Perceived build quality, though, could be better. Our Titanium AWD test vehicle was priced like a luxury brand but didn't look like it inside.

Wildcard
7/10
The Edge isn't the sharpest midsize SUV, but the steering is crisp. There's also a confidence in its basic driving dynamics that makes it a whisker more interesting than the average SUV. Given its size, quiet cabin, and sophisticated safety and infotainment tech, the Edge both meets and exceeds expectations for this class. Ultimately, its basic functionality will win people over.
2022 Ford Edge trim level differences
The 2022 Ford Edge is available in five trim levels: SE, SEL, ST-Line, Titanium and the performance-focused ST. All Edge trims save for the ST use a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine (250 horsepower, 280 lb-ft) paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The ST gets a more powerful 2.7-liter turbocharged V6 engine (335 hp, 380 lb-ft) paired with a seven-speed automatic. Both engines feed power to the wheels through a standard all-wheel-drive system.
Which Edge trim does Edmunds recommend?
Standard all-wheel drive makes the base Edge compelling, but we suggest stepping up to the midlevel SEL trim. It adds a few amenities including simulated leather upholstery and heated seats and it opens up the options list to more features.

2022 Ford Edge SEL 4dr SUV AWD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 8A)
My 2015 Edge was stolen. I thought about another used one. Or a different manufacturers SUV /CROSSOVER. I ended up leasing a new 2022 Edge. I have a big smile every time I get in it. From the off white leather interior, the comfortable seating and spaciousness, full ceiling slide sunroof, seat 3 in the backseat, and Cargo space are all wonderful. Heat and air conditioner are the best … foe any vehicle. But the 12in. Screen is amazing. I don't like the auto stop engine and the auto lane, so I turn off . Mileage is 22mpg to work and home over curvy, mountain road. 29mpg on the hiway was amazing. All wheel drive is reassuring on the road too. Can't say enough..Fords are the best. I have mostly had Fords..starting in 1966 my 1st car '57 Ford Fairlane, then a '72 Mustang, a '80 Lincoln Towncar, ' 82 Lincoln Mark 7., '94 Explorer, 2000 Explorer, 2009 Lincoln Towncar. 2015 Edge and now 2022 Edge. Oh not to mention my '05 F150 long bed, and 2 Motorhomes that were both Ford E450. Fords truly make the best vehicles.
A great sleeper

2022 Ford Edge ST 4dr SUV AWD (2.7L 6cyl Turbo 7A)
This is one fun midsized SUV to drive and own. No one realizes it is a 335 HP/ 380lb/ft AWD vehicle.
I have owned mine for 6 months and the fit and finish are superb. It is quick, handles well for it's size and the brakes are magnificent. The upgraded suspension is more for the comfort side but has very little body lean in a corner. I live in an area with speed humps (wider speed … bumps) and am amazed how well the suspension absorbs them.
There is so much room in the Edge and the panoramic roof option feels like having a convertible without having to deal with hot/humid Florida air getting in. If you want that, the sunroof opening is huge.
This isn't a vehicle for those that want a "look at me" status but you will have fun driving it and will surprise many from light to light even in stock form. Do go with 91 or above octane for peak performance although it drives just fine on 87.
I'm averaging 21mpg with mine but it will drop off if you drive fast. Eco or Boost your choice.
I suspect the upgraded suspension, brakes, cooling system and other goodies added for performance will make this a long lasting vehicle simply from an over engineered standpoint plus it is coupled to the 2.7 twin turbo motor that has done quite well in F-150s for many years.

2022 Ford Edge ST-Line 4dr SUV AWD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 8A)
Ford actually did the right thing! They replaced my LEMON 2020 Explorer and gave me a NEW 2022
Edge...this little vehicle is SUPER.
It handles great, much more spacious than I thought, plenty of
Head and leg room, cârgo ârea holds large items. I initially thought the Edge too small, it isn't. Actually Ford hit a home run ..really like this vehicle..No complaints
had one before, lease was up during covid, missed
