The 2022 Hyundai Tucson delivers a lot of value for the money, providing a comfortable ride and helpful technology features. We also like its upscale-feeling cabin and roomy cargo space. Unfortunately it's dogged by a sluggish engine that has trouble keeping pace when the traffic speeds up. Still, the Tucson is a thoughtful small SUV.

Overview

Hyundai has been revamping its lineup of SUVs as of late. Just about everything is a recent addition, including the extra-small Venue and three-row Palisade, or has been redesigned. Now, for 2022, it's the Tucson's turn. This is Hyundai's small SUV that competes against the likes of the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4. It's historically played things safe and stuck to conservative styling conventions, but not the 2022 Tucson. Can an affordable SUV be avant-garde?

Now in its fourth generation, the all-new version is quite different with its distinctive cascading headlight design, squared wheel arches and bold creases on the bodywork. The interior is also more dynamic, with a center stack devoid of hard buttons and a shroudless digital instrument panel. Also new for 2022 is the availability of three powertrain options. There's a conventional gasoline engine as well as two hybrid options: a standard hybrid and a plug-in hybrid with up to 28 miles of electric-only range. But some things, like Hyundai's generous warranty and general good value for money, remain unchanged.
Overall, we think Hyundai's done a nice job with the new Tucson. The hybrid, in particular, stands out as a compelling pick for a small SUV. Read our Expert Rating below to get our in-depth take on the Tucson's hits and misses.

Good
7.9
out of 10
We drove the 2022 Hyundai Tucson on our test track and on real roads. Our Edmunds team conducts rigorous independent vehicle testing, driving 500,000 miles a year.
Performance
7/10
How does the Tucson drive? Unfortunately the Tucson's engine struggles to get the SUV moving with authority. Around town and on the highway, it's OK to drive, but if you're in a hurry the sluggishness is apparent. The Tucson accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in 10.2 seconds during our testing, making it one of the slowest crossovers we've measured in some time.
The rest of the driving experience is unremarkable. We like the easy, direct steering and the way the Tucson remains composed around corners. The transmission upshifts smoothly, but downshifts can feel abrupt and crude when you quickly mash the gas.

Comfort
8/10
How comfortable is the Tucson? The Tucson approaches luxury-level quality when it comes to comfort. It has a supple suspension that provides an excellent ride, and bumps and cracks in the road are absorbed very well. It's among the best rides in the class.
We found the front seats on our Limited trim test vehicle to be excellent. They featured plush and supportive cushions covered in nice material and provided good lateral support and power lumbar adjustments. We also appreciate the level of quiet and insulation provided while the Tucson's in motion. It keeps noise outside of the cabin out better than most rivals, and even when the wind kicks up you won't strain to hold a conversation or enjoy the radio.

Interior
8.5/10
How’s the interior? Excellent ergonomics and an abundance of interior space make the Tucson's cabin a very pleasant place to be. The front seats offer plenty of room, and rear passengers will be able to stretch their legs or recline their seat. For drivers, it's easy to find a comfortable and commanding position, plus a large windscreen and thin pillars allow for great visibility.
We're less enthusiastic about the control arrangement. Nearly every feature is controlled through the touchscreen or flat, featureless buttons alongside it that offer no feedback to the touch. It would be nice to have a dial or controller of some kind for people who don't want to reach all the time. The screen is also prone to greasy smudge marks. There should be a better way.

Technology
8.5/10
How’s the tech? The Tucson offers a sharp set of technology features that work quickly and feel ultra-modern at this price. Firstly, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone connectivity is standard and displays nicely on the available 10.25-inch touchscreen. If you prefer Hyundai's native system, the navigation is easy to follow thanks to clear directions and a vivid map that work well in tandem. Another strong point is the voice activation feature, which recognizes commands well and doesn't force you to follow specific prompts as strictly as some competitors.
We also like the Tucson's set of driver aids. The blind-spot warnings are helpful and the adaptive cruise control works great in bottleneck traffic. The front and rear parking sensors will help keep you out of trouble when parking, but their incessant beeping can become tiring.

Storage
8/10
How’s the storage? You can toss plenty of stuff into the back of a Tucson. Its storage capacity of 38.7 cubic feet behind the rear seats is among the best for small SUVs. Fold down the rear seats and you've got 74.8 cubic feet at your disposal. The low liftover and nice flat floor should make it easy to stack up boxes on moving day or presents during the holidays. The cabin offers decent-sized spaces throughout to hold your small items. The cupholders can hold larger water bottles.
Got small children? Installing a child's seat is as easy as reaching between the rear cushions to locate the latches. The spacious back seat should provide plenty of room for even the most bulky rear-facing seats.

Fuel Economy
6.5/10
How’s the fuel economy? In all-wheel-drive guise, which is what we tested, the 2022 Tucson gets an EPA-estimated 26 mpg combined (24 city/29 highway). This isn't bad, and our time behind the wheel returned similar numbers in mixed city and highway driving, indicating the rating holds up in real-world use. But the number falls short of the Honda CR-V and Nissan Rogue when the Tucson's equipped with AWD. We would also hope for higher figures given the Tucson lacks much in the way of acceleration.
Value
8.5/10
Is the Tucson a good value? The Tucson's pricing is competitive for the class and generally lines up with what you'd pay for a Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4. But Hyundai does one-up the competition by giving you plenty of desirable features and excellent interior quality. The cabin design and materials are comfortable and interesting for the price and certainly a step above other compact crossover interiors. Hyundai's basic warranty of five years/60,000 miles and powertrain coverage of 10 years/100,000 miles also can't be beat. Overall, Tucson delivers excellent value at its price.
Wildcard
7/10
It's clear that Hyundai had fun building the Tucson — the expressive exterior design and lots of innovative tech features such as hidden headlights, interesting touchscreen menus and its remote-controlled parking system make that clear. Ultimately, though, these aspects come off as fancy icing on what is a pretty standard cake.
The Tucson is hamstrung by a sluggish engine that makes it feel like a chore to drive, and the transmission can be clunky unless driven for maximum efficiency. The Tucson stands out in a crowd, and there is a lot to like about its wealth of standard features. But it falls short of reaching fun-to-drive status in our book.

2022 Hyundai Tucson trim level differences
The 2022 Hyundai Tucson is available in eight trim levels with three engines offered. Four trim levels — SE, SEL, N Line, XRT and Limited — feature the conventional gasoline engine. The hybrid and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) are offered in three trims: Blue Hybrid, SEL Convenience Hybrid and Limited Hybrid. While the standard gasoline engine can be had with front- or all-wheel drive and uses an eight-speed automatic, the hybrids come standard with all-wheel drive and a six-speed automatic transmission.
Which Tucson trim does Edmunds recommend?
The best value comes from the SEL trim. It gets you some desirable extras, such as blind-spot monitoring, over the base SE trim and still keeps the cost low. You can also customize it with a couple of extra option packages if you want. For the Tucson Hybrid, the Blue Hybrid is the SEL's equivalent.

Giant leap ahead of the 2021 Tucson

2022 Hyundai Tucson SEL 4dr SUV AWD (2.5L 4cyl 8A)
I recently purchased a 2022 Tucson SEL Premium. This is my household's third Tucson; we had a 2017 SE and currently have a 2021 Value Edition. There are three notable differences (not counting the difference in appearance) compared to previous model years.
First and maybe most important is the 2.5L engine. Finally this SUV has a suitable sized engine. The 2.0L that previously powered … the Tucson underwhelming to say the least. While he 2.5L isn't going to put you back in your seat, it's going to get the job done merging onto the highway or pulling out in fast moving traffic.
Second, the seats are far more comfortable than they've been in the past. Next to the underpowered engine of past model years, this was my biggest complaint. I don't know if Hyundai is doing focus groups but they must have been made aware of the seats because they've addressed them. I couldn't imagine a long road trip in the front seats prior to the 2022 but now I'm looking forward to them.
Third, the backseat passengers got some leg room. If I'm not mistake the wheelbase is slightly longer this year and that extra length was gifted to backseat passengers. We have a few six footers in the family and packed a couple in the back seat this past weekend. There were no complaints, something we heard plenty of in the past. This one upgrade from previous model years really puts the Tucson up against it's larger sibling, the Sante Fe. I can't see spending more money on the Sante Fe at this point.
All in all, I'm very pleased with the new 2022 Tucson. I wasn't sure I'd get a third one but after owning it for a couple of weeks, I can't imagine buying something else at the same price.
Wow! Rav4 Prime vs CR-V Touring Hybrid vs Tucson

2022 Hyundai Tucson Limited Hybrid 4dr SUV AWD (1.6L 4cyl Turbo gas/electric hybrid 6A)
I'm a long time Toyota guy and for the most part, their vehicles have not disappointed over the years. We recently went on the search for a new compact SUV and looked at the Rav4 Prime, CR-V Touring Hybrid, and the new Tucson Limited here in the US (both hybrid and non versions).
2021 Rav4 Prime - In fairness to the Rav4 Prime we tested, it just came off the truck when we drove it and … it was not charged. So, it drove like a gas hybrid and only saw spurts of performance as a result of the regen. The ride was Ok, performance was adequate, road noise was a bit on the high side, and the interior just seemed dated and pieced together.
2021 CR-V Touring Hybrid - was impressive in almost all respects except the road noise during highway driving was significant. The infotainment system was a bit clutsy as well. Otherwise, it seemed quite refined and was our top choice at the time. But, we decided to wait for the 2022 Tucson (glad we did).
2022 Tucson Limited (gas version) - refined and does most things very well, but the performance is average.
2022 Tucson Limited Hybrid - Wow! What a difference between the two new Tucson models. Put this Hybrid into Sport Mode and it is fun to drive, simply leaving the others in the dust in terms of performance (no practical person would need more acceleration than this (it's not Tesla quick, but as quick as most would drive a Tesla). As for all other aspects, the Tucson Hybrid is hard to beat in almost every category. The interior is fantastic in all respects with the exception of the piano black and touchscreen controls that look nice now but likely a dust-collecting annoyance down the road. There are a few downsides to note: 1) no spare tire and that IMO is a significant oversight by Hyundai since it appears there's room for at least a donut spare. 2) for some reason that Hyundai won't publicly address, the 10.25 Infotainment screen on the higher end models does not support "wireless" Apple CarPlay and AndroidAuto (only wired support). However, that wireless feature is available on the lower end trims. So hopefully, there's a firmware update for this deficiency.
We bought the Hybrid Limited in White w/ gray interior and couldn't be happier. I honestly don't know why Hyundai is even bothering making the gas version, given the small price difference. We did consider waiting for the PHEV version, but, liked this hybrid version so much we jumped on it.
A few things to note on the Limited trim: the wipers are rain sensing and the passenger seat is full electric including up & down functions. The safety and tech on this vehicle is nearly insane and will take you some time to digest it all. Impressive.
One other thing to note, all of the electrified versions of the Tucson (hybrid included) are made in Ulsan, South Korea (VIN beginning with "K"). Comparing the fit and finish of the Tucson's from the Alabama plant vs the Korea plant show better refinement on those rolling off the Ulsan assembly line, at least by my eyes as inspecting the reveal tolerances between body panels at my dealership. Given the tech, safety features, comfort, and performance of the new Tucson Hybrid, it's certainly worth the test drive if considering this class of SUV. If reliability proves positive over time, this Tucson is a game-changer in this class and hopefully inspires my friends at Toyota to significantly step up their game.
A solid choice

2022 Hyundai Tucson SEL Convenience Hybrid 4dr SUV AWD (1.6L 4cyl Turbo gas/electric hybrid 6A)
I have purchased 2 of these vehicles, 1 on 13 May 21, the other on 2 July 21. They are both SEL Convenience packages. The first in Amazon Grey with 2-tone Grey and Black interior, beautiful ! The second one in Quartz White Pearl with all black interior. The black interior is nice but the 2 tone is very stunning. I picked the SEL Convenience packages because it gave me everything I … wanted in the vehicle, and had the appearance of the Limited along with the panoramic roof and 19 inch wheels. I am not a fan of leather and I do not need ventilated seats with cloth. The stereo is perfect without being a Bose...This model is loaded with all the right features. I have owned all of the Toyota Hybrid models. I got rid of each model because of noise and rattles and uncomfortable seats. With the break-in period this car smooths out after about 1000 miles. I get excellent mileage I accelerate to five MPH above the limit then let off the pedal and wait for the EV indicator to come on and feather the pedal back on. I constantly watch the EV light. I constantly achieve 43 or more MPG in mixed driving. That is as good as my RAV4, and this is with a real AWD setup, not electric as in the RAV4. The engine is so quiet ,and acceleration is amazing. This vehicle feels effortless driving it. This is my favorite vehicle I have ever had and I have had way over a hundred. I am sure Hyundai will offer a spare tire kit for those who really want one, since there is already one in the gas version I feel this is the best looking vehicle Hyundai has put out, besides Genesis. I feel they have gone up market with the Tuscan. With all of the Warranty and free maintenance and the dealer included a lifetime powertrain warranty for free, you just cannot lose. I have now had the last vehicle for 3 months and a few days the last one I purchased . It has been fantastic. Consumer reports has now listed this as the number one vehicle over Honda and RAV4 hybrids. They loved it for the same reasons I love it. Hyundai in Kia have really upped their game.
UPDATE: I have now had this vehicle 9 months and 9,500 MI,what a perfect vehicle this has been. This is the second best vehicle rated by consumer reports number one was the Kia telluride with 97 points. Next highest was the 22 Hyundai Tucson hybrid with 93 points. This score really represents the car well. I do not have one complaint on the car. It does everything perfectly. I am so happy I purchased this car. It does everything you expect it to do. With the snow we had this winter nothing could stop this car even on streets where all the 4x4s were sitting on the side of the street stuck,my car just kept going I'm sure it has something to do with the Michelin primacy all season tires. The four-wheel drive system works perfectly.
Love this car!!

2022 Hyundai Tucson SEL Convenience Hybrid 4dr SUV AWD (1.6L 4cyl Turbo gas/electric hybrid 6A)
Ride is smooth
Seats are very comfortable
Lots of leg room in the back row (for tall folks)
Lots of trunk space
Get the convenience and premium package. It’s so worth it. So many great features! You will love the heated/cooling seats and steering wheel, as well as the lane assist and cruise control features used together (feels like you are driving a Tesla car that drives itself). This … car is loaded with safety features. Plus the Bose sound system just puts the icing on the cake.
