Overview
The 2022 Mini Hardtop 4 Door kicks off a new look for an aging model. Now eight years removed from its debut, the Hardtop 4 Door still makes sense as a slightly more family-friendly version of the two-door thanks to a bit more legroom and, well, two more doors. "Slightly" is the key word here, though, as the Mini is a tight fit, especially in back.

Updates for 2022 include restyled front and rear ends, with LED headlights now a standard feature. A new body-colored panel also cuts across the black grille area, toning down the visual span of the last model's prodigiously wide mouth. In the back, a single-piece diffuser runs along the lower half of the bumper, replacing the last generation's air ducts and making for a cleaner look overall. A few new hardtop colors also join the list, as does a new Multitone roof, which features a color gradient that blends from blue to black.
The Hardtop's interior also gets a once-over, adding a digital instrument panel, a larger 8.8-inch touchscreen, satellite radio and lane departure warning. Apple CarPlay remains an option but there's still no support for Android Auto, and the Mini's changes are largely cosmetic. There are no power or performance upgrades.
Compounding matters are supply chain shortages that have forced Mini to halt production of standard manual transmissions. For now, the Hardtop 4 Door will only offer an automatic. The base trim level, Classic, is also being suspended, making the Signature trim the new base level. Mini says these changes are temporary but offers no timeline for their return.
Mini missed a chance to put some distance on hatchback rivals such as the Volkswagen Golf GTI and Honda Civic, cars that blend sporty with practical, and include now-common tech as standard features. The Mini's ace card has always been its swagger, largely because it can be personalized in myriad ways, from the color of the roof and side mirrors to dozens of stripe, wheel and color combinations. It's easy to build a Mini that stands out in a crowded parking lot.
2022 MINI Hardtop 4 Door trim level differences
Picking a 2022 Mini Cooper Hardtop 4 Door requires navigating a quirky menu of engine and trim choices. You start with either a Cooper or Cooper S, and the main difference between the two is the engine. The Cooper gets a turbocharged three-cylinder engine, while the Cooper S gets a larger, more powerful four-cylinder. Compare the 2022 MINI Hardtop 4 Door trim levels in-depth.
Which Hardtop 4 Door trim does Edmunds recommend?
We recommend springing for the Cooper S. The larger engine suits the car's personality, making it snappier and more responsive than the base three-cylinder (still a fine choice for a more fuel-efficient Mini). Then we'd go for the midlevel Signature trim since it adds features such as panoramic sunroof, heated front seats and keyless entry and opens up options including Apple CarPlay, upgraded upholstery and a premium audio system.

2020 MINI Hardtop 4 Door Cooper S 4dr Hatchback (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 7AM)
LOVE THIS CAR! The more I drive it, the more I love it!!! It’s a blast to drive, hugs the road, and has some good heft to it, so you don’t feel like you’re in a tin box. You get a lot of bang for your buck with this little gem. A lot of attention to detail was put into this vehicle. Lots of fun little surprises. The ONLY thing I wish it had more of was storage space....the center … console is very small. But that’s just a personal thing for me.
First car my wife still LOVES!

2018 MINI Hardtop 4 Door Cooper S 4dr Hatchback (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 6M)
Just a week after we took delivery of her Cooper S my wife told me, if anything happens to this car I want another one. After 50K miles she still feels the same. It's easy to see why. While outwardly small the feel inside is comfortable and refined, finishes are first class. The driving experience is unlike any other car I have driven. Coming clean, I used to race SCCA. I have had … Austin Healey's, Porsche 911 and 944, Fiat 124 Spider racer and other hotties. This Cooper S is the bomb. It has a sport mode that winds the tranny and gives instant boost. This thing sticks to the road. It's handling compares to the 911, to be fair the 911 had a smoother ride. I cannot think of a better urban attack vehicle. The Cooper S is front wheel drive but understeer is very manageable even when powering into traffic. The 4 door Cooper S is not a long hauler, a trip over 3 hours will become tiring though not impossible. Stopping every couple of hours makes a trip doable. If we need hauling space after a Costco trip simply drop the back seats, plenty of space. Premium gas is required or the engine will not deliver all its capable of, at 30 mpg overall that's no problem.
The 2018 is a third generation Mini built in Germany. Fit and finish are tight. Regular maintenance is the same as any other car. Reliability so far has been perfect. Bottom line, if you want a car for the city this is it. FAST, Nimble and easy to park. You'll love it.
Another 10K miles, everything I said Again.
It's a fiesty little thing! We love it!

2019 MINI Hardtop 4 Door Cooper 4dr Hatchback (1.5L 3cyl Turbo 6M)
All the sporty and fun factors of the original 2-door look, but with 4-door convenience! The base model has plenty of pep and tons of extras like heated seats, backup camera, bluetooth phone and music capabilities, moonroof, and is a head-turner on the road. We're in love!
