The Honda Civic is one of the automaker's most impressive vehicles, offering a wonderful combination of practicality, performance and value. Honda refreshed the Civic last year, adding an impressive hybrid powertrain and updating its exterior styling. As such, there aren't any major changes for 2026. But as it stands, the Civic is one of the best small sedans (or hatchbacks) on the market today.

We drove the 2026 Honda Civic on our test track and on real roads. Our Edmunds team conducts rigorous independent vehicle testing, driving 500,000 miles a year.

Driving experience

How does it drive? Around turns, the Civic Si sedan is responsive but stable and confidence-inspiring. The steering is light at lower speeds and weights up as speed builds for a bit more precision, though we would like a little more feedback.

Less impressive is the Si's engine. Our Civic Si accelerated to 60 mph in 7.2 seconds — not slow but far from quick compared to the VW GTI (5.9 seconds). Numbers aside, power is there when you need it, and we love rowing through the gears and working the clutch on this rare manual-transmission-only car.

The Si's suspension is stiffer than a standard Civic's but does a pretty good job of smoothing out bumps. We think it's an acceptable trade-off given the car's handling.

Outward visibility is aided by narrow front roof pillars and door-mounted side mirrors. The back window is a bit short, but the multi-angle rearview camera helps you spot anything behind.

The Si offers adaptive cruise, which is somewhat of a rarity with a manual. It reduces the burden of driving in slow traffic, though you do, of course, have to shift yourself. Honda's camera-based driving aids work well for the most part. Faded lane markings sometimes tripped up the lane keeping assistance.

Comfort

How comfortable is it? The Si's front sport seats are well cushioned and offer good lateral bolstering but not to the point of being constraining. The sport fabric breathes well to help keep you cool, but the seats lack adjustable lumbar support, which might be an issue for some.

The climate control layout offers great vent coverage for the cabin. Heated seats are standard beginning in 2025, but dual-zone automatic climate control still isn't available. Road noise is noticeable at any speed and can be rather intrusive on coarse surfaces. Wind noise is thankfully more subdued, and the rest of the interior feels solidly constructed and free of vibration.

All controls are within easy reach and intuitive to use. It's also roomy. The front can comfortably seat taller and shorter passengers equally well, and the rear seats will accommodate average-size adults with no problem. Rear legroom is abundant and headroom is adequate.

The Civic offers three top anchor spots for front-facing child safety seats, and the main lower anchor points are easy to access. Larger rear-facing infant carriers will likely compromise front passenger space a little, but this is true for most cars in this segment.

In-cabin tech

How’s the tech? The Civic Si's 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system is thoughtfully positioned high on the dash, allowing you to keep your eyes on the road. Its intuitive on-screen menus and responsive performance make it easy to use. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard across all Civics, and the Si offers the convenience of a wireless version. However, as in the regular Civic, the wireless CarPlay connection occasionally experienced a slight delay and stability issues. For a more reliable and faster experience, using a USB cable is recommended. It's also worth noting that the Si does not include rear USB ports, a wireless charger or a digital key, which may be a drawback for some users.

Storage & cargo

How’s storage and cargo? The Civic Si's trunk can hold up to 14.4 cubic feet of cargo, which is generous compared to other sedans but not as much space as sporty hatchbacks like the Volkswagen GTI offer. The space is usable thanks to minimal intrusion from the Civic's wheelwells and trunk hinges. You can fold down the rear seats to provide more cargo space, though the pass-through opening between the trunk and rear seat isn't very big.

One thing we really liked about the previous Civic: It had lots of clever interior storage. Honda implemented more traditional storage spots for this new Civic, which is a small step back in our opinion. Still, the center armrest bin can hold a good amount and the cupholders are large.

Value

Is it a good value? The Honda Civic Si has long been a solid choice in the sport compact segment, but its value has diminished as its price has climbed to over $31K. Once a bargain, the Si now struggles to compete with rivals that offer more power, luxury and features for only slightly more money. With just 200 horsepower, it's the slowest in its class, lagging behind the VW Jetta GLI and Golf GTI and Hyundai Elantra N. Inside, it's lacking premium touches like dual-zone climate control or an adaptive suspension, which competitors provide.

Honda's warranty is unremarkable with three years/36,000 miles of basic and five years/60,000 miles of powertrain coverage, yet the Civic Si remains a reliable car with strong resale value.

How’s the fuel economy? The EPA estimates the Civic Si will get 31 mpg in combined city/highway driving. The Si bests its most direct performance competitors by at least 3 mpg. We managed to achieve 34.6 mpg on our mixed-driving evaluation route, which indicates the EPA estimates can be pretty accurate if you're not a lead-footed driver.

X factor

The Civic Si is a joy to drive. Sharp handling, responsive steering and a smooth-shifting six-speed manual transmission all help create a sporty driving experience, even if the Si doesn't have as much straight-line speed as its competition. Its styling is unremarkable, but that's largely the point of this latest-generation Civic.

The Toyota Corolla is the Civic's top competitor, and Toyota took great strides to make sure this generation of the popular compact was more competitive than its predecessors. But the Corolla feels old (it was last redesigned in 2020), and its hybrid variant doesn't hold a candle to the Civic hybrid. Not only is the Toyota less efficient, it's also significantly less powerful. Other solid picks include the Hyundai Elantra, which comes standard with a ton of advanced driver aids and also offers a hybrid powertrain, and the Mazda 3, which is plenty sporty in its own right.

Edmunds spotlight: An excellent hybrid powertrain

The Civic's hybrid powertrain churns out 200 horsepower — matching the sporty Civic Si — and bests it when it comes to low-end torque. That means it feels extra-punchy for low-speed driving around town. The hybrid doesn't come with all the performance goodies you'll get on an Si, but it does boast an awesome 49 mpg in combined city/highway driving according to the EPA's estimate. Buy a Civic and you'll love the hybrid power's hard-to-beat blend of performance and efficiency.

I already love this car. Pros: Shifting is so smooth and fun. The car is tight. Tight steering, suspension. You are not wobbling and rocking all over the road. Think go-cart in Pigeon Forge TN.
