2023 Chevrolet Traverse Review
Pros
- Generous passenger room in all three rows
- Quick acceleration
- Feature-rich and easy-to-use infotainment system
Cons
- Rear seats and thick roof pillars significantly block rear visibility
- Quality of some interior panels and controls seems low-rent for this class
What's new
- The Traverse returns unchanged for 2023
- Part of the second Traverse generation introduced for 2018
Overview

These days, vehicles need to exceed expectations to be considered a success. Simply checking off boxes no longer passes the test, no matter how capable a car may be. When the current-generation Chevrolet Traverse debuted in 2018, we used words like "decidedly average" and "awkward" to describe it. It was at a disadvantage from the start, and the major refreshening it received last year did little to significantly improve its standing.

The 2023 Chevrolet Traverse returns unchanged from last year, and while we award points for its responsive acceleration, intuitive infotainment system, and impressive passenger and cargo space, those traits are not enough to draw even with rivals. The Traverse suffers with poor rearward visibility and an interior rife with far too much hard plastic, making it look and feel out of place among competitors that flirt with entry-level luxury. On top of that, class leaders deliver more features and higher-quality interiors for less.
As a result, we suggest checking out the competition before deciding on a Chevy Traverse. The Kia Telluride is the best you can get, and it's also due for a refresh in 2023. Likewise, you'd do well to test drive the Telluride's sibling: the Hyundai Palisade with its more luxurious personality. We even recommend the Honda Pilot, despite the current-generation Pilot predating the Traverse by a few years. The Traverse isn't a bad car — we'd call it about average overall, but there are several superior options to consider.

2023 Chevrolet Traverse trim level differences
The 2023 Chevrolet Traverse is available in six trim levels: LS, LT Cloth, LT Leather, RS, Premier and High Country. All Traverse models use a 3.6-liter V6 (310 horsepower, 266 lb-ft of torque) and a nine-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive is standard, but all-wheel drive is optional across the board.
Which Traverse trim does Edmunds recommend?
We recommend stepping up to the LT Leather trim for its many comfort and convenience items that you won't get on the base LS model. In particular, the larger touchscreen and power liftgate are great additions. This trim strikes the right balance of price and features in the lineup.

Not disappointed

2023 Chevrolet Traverse RS 4dr SUV AWD (3.6L 6cyl 9A)
For starters, I'm a Chevy girl. This is my 3rd chevy vehicle. (04 Trailblazer, 2016 Equinox and now 2023 Traverse).
I opted for the RS trim as I originally was looking for a Tahoe but they are selling fast in my area.
I am not disappointed and honestly this is the highest trim I have ever had in a car, so to me it is luxurious.
I have a blended family of 6 total, 4 kids ages 4 months … to 21 years old.
This SUV fits all of us comfortably with the captain seats in the 2nd row.
A few things I've had to get use to are, the V6. The Equinox in comparison is much slower at gaining speed. The braking takes a bit longer as it's a bit bigger and the steering feels much looser than the Equinox.
The infotainment center connects directly to my phone and I can display my maps instead of using OnStar.
The trim upgrade, interior and exterior, is worth the few extra $$$.
The trunk space is what I was most concerned about, but there is an additional compartment under the back floor between the spare tire.
Overall, it's been very easy to get use to and discover all the features that are offered.
Solid Midsize SUV

2023 Chevrolet Traverse LS 4dr SUV AWD (3.6L 6cyl 9A)
Don't care about YouTube (mostly paid) bloggers reviews. This is a solid car. I have owned several vehicles and spent 1 month comparing the 2023 Traverse (even approaching its end of life, same generation since 2018) versus Nissan Pathfinder, Honda Pilot and Ford Explorer. Hyped Koreans, KIA and Hyundai, were just not options for me. Traverse won in terms of space, engine (310 hp) and a … great cost / benefit for base trims. Media could be bigger, but Japanese new models also have only 7 or 8" LED displays. Worth mentioning Honda and Nissan have drastically reduced the quality of components, especially for base trims (eg: tires are cheaper Kumhos on Nissan's S Pathfinder). Bought it for my wife and kids as a family hauler. Low depreciation, affordable maintenance. Overall, very satisfied with the car.
We’re back!

2023 Chevrolet Traverse LS 4dr SUV (3.6L 6cyl 9A)
We had an 2018 Traverse and really enjoyed it. After life happened and we got rid of it we always had our hearts on getting another one. Thanks be to GOD that we were able to come to where we are.
We weighed our options and returned to the Traverse. I’m so happy we did.
They did a few modifications and improved it greatly (giving me the option to shut off AUTOMATIC SHUTOFF).
Our side … hustle is delivering so this really gives a greater opportunity.
Another plus is when the grandchildren visit we aren’t cramped. Upper midsize SUVs like the Traverse are affordable and functional for all your needs.
Great for a family of 5

2023 Chevrolet Traverse RS 4dr SUV (3.6L 6cyl 9A)
Unless you are willing and capable of purchasing an Expedition , or Suburban / Yukon there is no comparison. You can comfortably fit 6 adults in a traverse and still have room for groceries behind the third row. Try doing that with a highlander, explorer or Pilot. The engine / transmission pairing could not be any better. The transmission shifts like butter and the engine has plenty of … power. It’s down right fast. I thought for sure I was going to purchase an explorer. But after driving the two there is no way I would even consider an explorer. The turbo engines potential maintenance issues scare me and the 10 speed transmission is horrible. Yes the traverses interior quality could be better. But that true with all GM products…. Including their $100,000 Cadillacs.
