Overview
Sit with this idea: Not only has the new 2025 Bentley Flying Spur abandoned its long-serving 12-cylinder engine, but it's also become a full hybrid. The last part isn't new, as the Flying Spur has offered an optional plug-in powertrain since 2022, although in smaller V6 form. But the headline W12 engine has been part of the Flying Spur story for two decades. The new powertrain is a fitting replacement, though, built around a big turbo V8 offering better fuel economy and fewer emissions. (Bentley claims up to 90% less than the outgoing Spur.) What hasn't changed are the Flying Spur's world-class pampering and performance.
Edmunds spotlight: Out with the old, in with the new
The Flying Spur's outgoing W12 engine — essentially two V6s welded together — impressed with staggering power (626 hp) and effortless delivery. That's a tough act to follow, but the new plug-in powertrain that combines a turbocharged V8 with its hybrid componentry is up to the task. It belts out a total of 771 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque. In our testing, it took just 3.3 seconds to reach 60 mph. That's about a half-second quicker than the old 12-cylinder. The new Flying Spur proved it can drive more than 40 miles on all-electric power in our testing.
Competitors to consider
The 2025 Flying Spur's beguiling style, bespoke craftsmanship and blistering performance put it in a rarefied class. The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class is a fine alternative, though. It rides like a magic carpet, has Maybach badge credibility, and is even available with a 12-cylinder engine. It doesn't cost exceptionally less than the Bentley, but probably enough to cover the insurance. The top-trim Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid is another more affordable option. It's also a plug-in hybrid with tremendous handling performance but a stiffer ride than the Bentley. If cost is truly no object, the Rolls-Royce Ghost offers all the comfort, luxury and performance as the Flying Spur and decidedly more cachet.

Our Verdict
The Edmunds Vehicle Testing Team evaluates a fresh batch of vehicles every week, pairing objective assessments at our test track with real-world driving on city streets, freeways and winding roads. The data we gather results in our Expert Ratings. They’re based on 30-plus scores that cover every aspect of the automotive experience.Performance
Numbers aside, this car has a beautiful ability to be easy to drive in slow traffic and then fun to drive in more open road situations. That's mostly due to the powertrain, which switches seamlessly between gas and electric modes. It truly feels like the best of both worlds, which can't be said of all performance hybrids. The Speed lacks the grip or handling balance needed to be a bona fide sport sedan, but then again that's not really the point of a Flying Spur.
Comfort
Inside the car things are super quiet. The Bentley does a remarkable job of keeping wind and road noise outside of the vehicle, as it should for this kind of money. It's serene, relaxing transportation, interrupted only by the occasional splash of V8 when you're really on the gas.
Interior
Bentley has placed all major controls within easy reach. We like that Bentley uses physical buttons for many controls instead of routing them through the touchscreen like a lot of other automakers do.
On the downside, the Flying Spur's shiny piano black and chrome trim in the center console reflect lots of sunlight back into your eyes. It can really get distracting on sunny days. Outward visibility isn't so great either. The high beltline means the windows are relatively short, and seeing over the long hood is a pain. A surround-view camera, parking sensors and blind-spot warning help a lot.
Technology
All of the driver aids help make piloting this giant vehicle a bit less hectic, especially on the highway. The adaptive cruise control is well mannered, keeping the car placed in the center of the lane and slowing down with plenty of warning when traffic shows up all of a sudden. But the Flying Spur's tech isn't exactly groundbreaking. It doesn't have a hands-free driving assist feature, for example, which is something you can get on luxury sedans costing half a much.

Which Flying Spur does Edmunds recommend?
Of the two trims available now, we'd opt for the Flying Spur Speed. It offers the same power as the pricier Mulliner, and many of the Mulliner's standard features are optional for the Speed, allowing you to tailor your preferences. The Mulliner adds a measure of bling unavailable on the more subdued Speed trim, so if you like more chrome and flash, the Mulliner might be worth the upgrade.
