The BMW M5 is supposed to do a little bit of everything. The redesigned 2025 M5 offers some striking numbers and a great interior, but it has gained half a ton in weight and lost some of its dynamic talents in the process. If you want one, don't let us stop you — just know this M5 isn't as sharp as the M5s of old.Read full review

Overview

The BMW M5 returns for 2025 with a new plug-in hybrid twin-turbocharged V8 drivetrain and an M5 Touring wagon variant — the first ever to grace U.S. shores. The 2025 BMW M5 uses the familiar 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 with assistance from an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery pack. Total system output is an eye-popping 717 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque, which drives all four wheels via an M-tuned xDrive all-wheel-drive system. As in previous generations, the M5 is a comfortable highway cruiser that has the capability to quickly and effortlessly reach triple-digit speeds suitable for unrestricted sections of Germany's autobahn. It's also a competent handler in spite of its increased weight, and cornering ability is boosted by the addition of rear steering. Like the standard 5 Series on which it's based, the M5 features a sleek interior design with an impressive complement of tech.

Edmunds spotlight: At last, a wagon
Though previous M5 generations offered a wagon model for Europe, 2025 marks the first time the body style is available in the States. The 2025 BMW M5 Touring uses the same plug-in hybrid drivetrain, but it features an elongated roofline and rear hatch that arguably looks more cohesive than the sedan's boxy hind quarters. The addition of a rear roof pillar affords the M5 Touring a respectable 17.7 cubic feet of cargo volume behind the rear seats and an expansive 57.6 cubic feet with those seats folded down. BMW estimates the M5 Touring can reach 60 mph from a standstill in 3.5 seconds, which is only a tenth of a second slower than the M5 sedan. The Bavarian automaker is routinely conservative with its acceleration estimates, so you can likely expect that number to be even lower once our test team gets its hands on an M5 Touring.
Competitors to consider
The BMW M5 competes with other superlative performance variants in the midsize luxury sedan category, including the Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing and Audi RS 7 and RS 6 Avant. The M5's closest rival, the Mercedes-AMG E 63 S, is expected to return by 2026, possibly sporting a turbocharged four-cylinder plug-in hybrid powerplant. Other options worth your consideration are the Porsche Panamera, the four-door Mercedes-AMG GT and the Maserati Quattroporte.

We drove the 2025 BMW M5 on our test track and on real roads. Our Edmunds team conducts rigorous independent vehicle testing, driving 500,000 miles a year.
Driving experience
7.5/10
How does the BMW M5 drive? Bad news: This M5 is slower and stops worse than the last M5 we tested. It needed 3.4 seconds to hit 60 mph in our testing. The last one? Just 3.2 seconds. It also needed 118 feet to stop from 60 mph. Though we suspect our test car's tires were past their prime, the 2018 M5 we tested did it in 99 feet. In pure performance terms, this M5 is a step backward due to its massive 1,000-pound weight gain.
Things don't get better when you get off the test track and head to a curvy road. The moment you turn a wheel, it's clear the M5 isn't as talented as before. The steering lacks connection, and all that mass muddies your faith in the car's performance. The ride has also been firmed up significantly to deal with the extra weight, and even in its softest setting, the suspension is too firm for everyday driving.
What BMW gets right on all 5 Series models, the M5 gets right too. The driver assistance systems, such as lane keeping assistance, adaptive cruise and blind-spot warning, all work well. Visibility is good thanks to a good view out of the front, sides and back. Plus, the multiple camera views and the sharp screen resolution are helpful aids too.

Comfort
7.9/10

The screens are super clear and make important information (like tire temperature and oil pressure) easy to access and read. The M5's firm ride creates some vibrations that make their way into the cabin, but the materials never squeak or rattle against each other. Quirks from the firm ride aside, the M5 strikes a nice balance between sport and comfort.
The M5's climate controls are all touchscreen-based. Using them can be cumbersome, but we have no complaints about the climate system's ability to quickly heat or cool the cabin. The vents, however, can be a burden to adjust because of the atypical knobs BMW used. Should you need to fit car seats in your super hi-po sedan, the M5 has a decently roomy back seat with easy-to-access Isofix points.
In-cabin tech
8.5/10
How’s the tech? Even though the learning curve is steep, the software and hardware that make up BMW's infotainment are excellent. The screen reacts quickly and looks great thanks to deep blacks and great bright colors. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto both connect wirelessly and work faultlessly. We'd like more USB-C ports and a cooled charging pad, however.
BMW's voice control system is one of the best around, and while it might feel weird to talk to your car, the system works well enough that you'll want to use it. It can process commands like changing the temperature, turning on and off the head-up display, and more. Given how many of these functions are buried in a screen menu, this is a welcome feature.

Storage & cargo
8/10
How’s storage and cargo? The M5 features one of the larger trunks you'll find in a midsize luxury sedan. There's significantly more space in the rear than the also hybridized Mercedes-AMG E 53 sedan. There is a small concession in cargo space compared to the regular 5 Series due to the hybrid battery, but it's only something you'd notice if you compared the cars back to back.
Storage inside the cabin is good, too, with several spots to stash sunglasses, small bags and more. There's a small bin in front of the cupholders large enough to stash two phones too. The door pockets aren't massive, but we'd say that's common for this class.

Value
7.7/10
Is the BMW M5 a good value? Value isn't always a question when you want an M5. You want one because you want something that offers blistering performance and everyday usability. The cost is simply a byproduct of how much you expect of a car like this. That said, the M5 is built extremely well, and even though that can be said about all of the modern 5 Series range, the build quality holds up even at the M5's much loftier price tag.
The problem is that, value-wise, it makes the previous M5 (which was quicker in our testing) look like more of a bargain than ever. Unless the added flexibility of a PHEV powertrain is important to you, the M5's performance doesn't suit its price. BMW's four-year/50,000-mile basic and powertrain warranties are below average for the class.

Electric range/MPG
5.5/10
How’s the fuel economy? The EPA says that the M5 will do 27 miles on EV power alone, and after that, the gas engine will get up to 14 mpg combined. M5 buyers have always known they weren't getting a fuel-sipper, but on a long road trip, with the gas engine and electric motor efficiently trading off propulsion duties, we averaged 24 mpg. However, that's only if you're being extremely careful and road-tripping with mpg in mind. In city driving, you can expect to see numbers closer to what the EPA has estimated, and by performance plug-in hybrid standards, that's not very good.
X factor
8/10
You don't see many M5s on the road, and it has gravitas — even when sitting still. But its performance potential, plus the numbers we got in our day of testing, means it's lost a bit of the supercar-slaying menace of the last M5. It's a more usable and efficient car than before, but that has come at the expense of less charm and focus.
2025 BMW M5 trim level differences
The 2025 BMW M5 is a high-performance midsize luxury car offered in just one trim level but two different body styles: the M5 sedan and M5 Touring, a wagon variant. Both are powered by a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 plug-in hybrid setup, which makes a combined 717 horsepower and 738 lb-ft. That power is distributed to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel-drive system, which have been tuned for performance by BMW's M division. With its transmission-mounted electric motor, the M5 is capable of driving on battery power alone and is estimated to be capable of traveling 25 miles before the gas engine kicks on. Feature highlights include:
Which M5 trim does Edmunds recommend?
There's only one model in the lineup, so your job is made easy for you. However, your M5 can be made a little bit more special by adding a few packages. We think the Driving Assistance Professional package is worthwhile since it gives you hands-free driving capability under 40 mph and it's only about $1,000 more than the standard adaptive cruise control option. For a bit more luxury, check the box for the Executive package to gain access to ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, side window shades and the M5's slick-looking illuminated kidney grille.
