The X3 is BMW's entrant in the small luxury SUV class, filling the space between the subcompact X1 and the larger X5. It's fully redesigned for 2025, ushering in a fourth generation of one of BMW's most popular models. The new X3 is about the same size as before and has a fresh look highlighted by angular body creases and a prominent grille. Other changes include revised engines and new technology features. How does the BMW X3 drive? If you want to savor the experience of driving your SUV rather than it being just a means of transportation, the BMW X3 M50 certainly delivers. At the Edmunds test track, our M50 sprinted from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds — that's sports-car quick. Despite its speed, the M50 maintains a refined driving experience, effortlessly transitioning to a relaxed pace for city cruising.

The X3 M50 feels sharp and remarkably agile for an SUV. The steering is well weighted and easy to wield through tight urban streets or on open highways, and it stops with confidence. Its higher SUV-like center of gravity only becomes more apparent under aggressive driving. The X3 M50 generally has a comfortable ride over bumps, but passengers in the back might find the suspension a bit firm even in the softest Comfort setting.

Visibility is generally good, but opting for the surround-view camera system adds valuable peace of mind in tight parking situations. The X3 M50 also comes with a suite of driver aids, though systems like adaptive cruise control and automated parking feel a step behind the tech from market leaders like Tesla.

How comfortable is the BMW X3? The BMW X3's front seats have firm cushioning and many available adjustments. The second row provides ample headroom and decent legroom, although it lacks the reclining function found in competitors like the Genesis GV70. Getting in and out is straightforward thanks to wide door openings, though the flush door handles can be difficult to grip, particularly for children.

The climate controls are integrated into the touchscreen, requiring additional steps to make adjustments, which may feel less intuitive. The air vents feature a unique manual knob offset from the vent vanes, making them slightly harder to direct compared to traditional designs. Rear passengers benefit from air vents but lack independent fan and temperature controls. Cabin noise levels are moderate, with some engine and road noise becoming noticeable during harder acceleration. While it's not overly disruptive, there are quieter options available in this class.

How’s the tech? The X3 offers modern and practical tech features. The main app menu may seem overwhelming at first, but it becomes more intuitive to use over time. The dual-screen setup includes a responsive, high-res touchscreen and built-in apps for music and navigation. For those who prefer their own devices, wireless connectivity for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration comes standard.

Connectivity is a strong point too. There are two USB-C ports in each row and a wireless charging pad with a vertical design to keep things organized. A digital key (allows your smartphone to double as a key) and remote app functionality help support the needs of modern life.

How’s storage and cargo? The BMW X3 impresses with its cargo space and practicality. It offers 31.5 cubic feet of storage, beating competitors like the Mercedes-Benz GLC (21.9 cubic feet) and Genesis GV70 (28.9 cubic feet). The 40/20/40-split rear seats fold nearly flat, providing flexibility for you to haul larger items. Cabin storage for small items is decent; the door pockets are big enough for water bottles, but the center armrest bin and glovebox are small. There are also two cupholders and a wireless charging slot, though you might end up using them to store miscellaneous items.

When properly equipped, the X3 stands out with a max towing capacity of 4,000 pounds for the 30 xDrive and 4,850 pounds for the M50. That's one of the highest towing capacities in its class.

Is the BMW X3 a good value? The BMW X3 offers a well-rounded package with some minor drawbacks. The interior feels solid overall, but some materials, like the door plastics, feel cheap. Thanks to mild hybrid technology, this engine has been refined across the board, delivering both efficiency and enhanced capability. The less powerful 30 xDrive is only a little better with its EPA-estimated 29 mpg combined.

In the M50 trim, the X3 offers a fun, practical package that's hard to resist. While the design isn't exactly groundbreaking, it's far from unattractive. It may not be the most stylish SUV in its class, but it arrives at a welcome time when BMW's oversized grille trend is fading. Its low stance gives it the appearance of a hatchback or wagon, which feels fitting since it handles more like a souped-up hot hatch than an SUV on the road.

The ride is way better than previous X3. It’s quick and on Sport setting, dangerously fast. The M50 is a quiet and comfortable daily driver in Comfort or Sport settings. However, there are areas we do not like. Every control is touch screen and saving settings for two drivers has been a nightmare. We miss traditional buttons and easy memory settings. Not sure we will keep this one …

This my 16th BMW, and this model is exceed only by my 2012 335is. Comfortable ride, beautiful dashboard controls, modern and sleek; yet has power off the line and responds as a BMW should. Options galore to suit driving style and personal comfort. This is truly a winner, Been driving it for 6 months. Kind distance rides of over 5 hrs getting micro higher 30’s mpg. Unbelievable.
