While other sport sedan manufacturers ask if you want fast or comfortable, Audi simply asks, "Why not both?" The 2024 Audi RS 7 combines massive speed and performance potential with a compliant ride and a modern, tech-forward interior. And thanks to its hatchback design, it's also tremendously practical. Some buyers might not like Audi's newest infotainment system, but there's very little else to fault in this automotive tour de force.Read full review

Overview

With coupe-like styling, SUV-like utility and blazing speed, the 2024 Audi RS 7 offers a unique combination of fun and functionality. Four doors and five seats mask its family-sedan roots, while a 621-hp turbocharged V8 signals supercar ability, propelling the RS 7 from 0 to 60 mph in about 3 seconds. A rear liftgate and 24 cubic feet of cargo space do the work of a modern crossover, and the RS 7 is also loaded with advanced safety and connected tech and Audi's typically lush interior quality and comfort. It's a distinct, if not conventional, checklist for an ultra-performance car.

Edmunds spotlight: More power and lighter for 2024
Where the A7 comes with a robust but mild-mannered V6, the RS 7 comes with a V8 that generates nearly double the power. For 2024, the RS 7 gets a boost in horsepower and torque — about a 5% increase on both counts — and software refinements for snappier gear changes. Audi also lightened the RS 7's load by removing 17 pounds of sound insulation. A limited Bronze Edition comes loaded with nearly every high-performance option, but good luck finding one — Audi is only making 50 of them. No matter.
Competitors to consider
Utility is the RS 7's secret weapon, thanks to its hatch-style trunk and ample cargo space. The Porsche Panamera has a similar layout with less room, but it's lighter, more agile and more visceral. The BMW M5 costs less and rivals the RS 7's power and luxury, but it's a traditional sedan with a trunk. Inside the family, the RS 6 Avant is essentially an RS 7 with a wagon body and about 20% more cargo space.

Great
8.5
out of 10
We drove the Audi RS 7 on our test track and on real roads. Our Edmunds team conducts rigorous independent vehicle testing, driving 500,000 miles a year.
Performance
9/10
How does the RS 7 drive? Getting to 60 mph in just 3.3 seconds is fast no matter what kind of car you're driving. But doing it in the 4,900-pound RS 7 makes it that much more incredible. Thanks to its all-wheel-drive system, the RS 7 can fully deploy its 621 horsepower from a stop, which only adds to the practicality of its massive performance. And thanks to its broad powerband, the RS 7 is also remarkably relaxing to drive in everyday traffic. Ample passing power is readily available.
Just as incredible as the acceleration is the RS 7's handling. It pulled 1.0 g on our skidpad and out on real roads will likely leave most sports cars in the dust. Our test car had the optional carbon-ceramic brakes, and they hauled it down from 60 mph in just 107 feet and exhibited no fade during a fair bit of enthusiastic driving. The capability of the RS 7 is nothing short of stunning.

Comfort
9/10
How comfortable is the RS 7? You'd be right to assume the RS 7 has driven comfort into the ditch in the name of mondo performance, but you'd be dead wrong. In spite of its available 22-inch wheels, the RS 7's adaptive air suspension delivers a ride that borders on supple. And as aggressive as the RS seats look, they afford long-haul comfort with supple leather and padding that can almost be described as plush.
Adding to the impressive levels of comfort in the RS 7 is the near utter lack of road or wind noise. Even those aforementioned 22-inch wheels and aggressive summer tires don't make enough noise to disturb the occupants. Our test car was fitted with the optional sport exhaust. But instead of emitting obnoxious pops and bangs, it offered a muffled bassy roar even in its most aggressive setting.

Interior
8/10

Curiously, the RS 7's steering wheel is simply too large and either blocks part of the instrument panel or is simply too high when adjusted to clear the display. The RS 7's Virtual Cockpit, Audi's fully digital and reconfigurable instrument panel, can get cluttered with too much, even seemingly unimportant, information. Keeping it simple worked best for us. The climate control screen takes extra glances and extra time to get what you want out of it.

Technology
8/10
How’s the tech? At 10.1 inches, the main screen takes up a sizable chunk of the dashboard. Stylish and crisp graphics make it attractive and fit right in with the RS 7's aesthetic. The system does have a steep learning curve, but it's fairly customizable and reacts quickly to commands. Our only real complaint is when off, the screens look smudged and full of fingerprints.
The standard audio system is more than adequate but falls a bit short of audio systems in other German luxury cars. There is an optional upgraded Bang & Olufsen system that might compare better against its rivals. Surround-view cameras with highly accurate parking sensors are standard and much appreciated. We had no issues with the adaptive cruise and lane keeping systems — except that the adaptive cruise is optional at this price point.

Storage
8/10
How’s the storage? Remind us again why more people don't buy hatchbacks? The RS 7's max 24.6 cubic feet of cargo space makes it eminently practical. And when combined with its low load floor and 40/20/40-split folding rear seats, the RS 7 could easily swallow a bicycle or two. For comparison, the similar hatchback-style Porsche Panamera only manages to offer a maximum of 17.4 cubic feet of capacity, while the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT four-door tops out at 12.7 cubic feet.
Unfortunately, interior storage isn't nearly as impressive. There's no cubby ahead of the shifter, and the center console bin is shallow. For everyday items, the cupholder will have to do most of the heavy lifting. Got kids? Thanks to wide-opening rear doors and plenty of rear legroom, installing a child safety seat in the RS 7 should be a breeze.

Fuel Economy
7/10
How’s the fuel economy? The EPA estimates the RS 7 gets 17 mpg combined. You can expect even less than that if you drive it with some gusto. Over our 115-mile mixed-driving evaluation route, the RS 7 returned a credible 19.6 mpg. Traffic was particularly light on the day of our test, but it's still a good indication the RS 7 can match its economy estimates if driven with some restraint.
Value
8/10
Is the RS 7 a good value? In a word, yes. Starting just under $130,000, the Audi RS 7 undercuts rivals like the BMW M8 Gran Coupe by about $10K and the Porsche Panamera GTS by about $25K — and the latter is a lot less powerful. The price difference between our well-appointed test car and a similarly equipped example of one of these rivals cost was well into five-figure territory, and we'd be hard-pressed to explain why its competitors are so much more expensive. The RS 7's build quality is unassailable, and every seam, surface and detail are worthy of the price.
Audi's limited and powertrain warranties are average in terms of length. Roadside assistance is offered for four years with unlimited mileage, but BMW has the edge on the Audi, providing three years of free scheduled maintenance.

Wildcard
9.5/10
To the casual motorist, the Audi RS 7 will look like nothing more than a really long hatchback. But to the discerning enthusiast, the RS 7's flared fenders, big wheels and menacing styling make it look like a wolf in ill-fitting sheep's clothing. The owner, however, will know the RS 7 to be one of the most refined, well-rounded and devastatingly fast performance sedans on the market. And as a bonus, that hatchback body style adds a big dose of practicality.
2024 Audi RS 7 trim level differences
The 2024 Audi RS 7 is a midsize high-performance sedan with a hatchback-style trunk. It's powered by a turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 (621 horsepower, 627 lb-ft) mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission with standard all-wheel drive. It's offered in only a single trim — Performance — and, beyond a choice of colors, only a few options and packages are available. Standard features include:
Which RS 7 trim does Edmunds recommend?
The RS 7 comes in just a single trim, but several options allow for a personal touch. The Driver Assistance package is almost a must-have, adding full-speed adaptive cruise control, rear crash mitigation, traffic sign recognition, and blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic warning. Hardcore drivers might opt for stand-alone options such as the sport exhaust, stiffer sport suspension and lightweight wheels, while sound aficionados might consider the upgraded Bang & Olufsen audio system.

Underwhelming?!?!?!
5 out of 5 starsDrRon, 03/26/2023
2023 Audi RS 7 4dr Sedan AWD (4.0L 8cyl Turbo gas/electric mild hybrid 8A)
I wish I could give this car 7 stars to negate the previous 3 star review. I agree with every point in the Edmunds review. This beast is ferocious and yet refined. Launch control on dry pavement will give you vertigo while the on-board G meter touches 1.1! I also own a GR Supra which can't touch the RS7. The Supra is its own kind of tail happy fun, but the 4wd, 4 wheel steering RS7 is … supremely fast and confident in all conditions. It's perfomane reminds me of a new R8 I recently drove on the track, incredibly fast without the drama of a Hurican. In comfort mode it is a teutonic GT around town and on the interstate a relaxing but not numb cocoon. At the same time it converts back to beast with the touch of one button to embarrass
the Covette or 911. As for its cmpetion the M5 is boring to look at, the AMG sedate and the Blackwing plasticky. What's not to love?!

Audi RS 7 vs. Audi RS 6
The RS 6 Avant is the same car as the RS 7, except in a slightly more practical wagon body style. It costs a bit less than the RS 7 and offers more cargo space and headroom. It also comes with roof rails. If you like the idea of the RS 7 but need something that serves a more active lifestyle, the RS 6 fits the bill. And while it may not look as lithe as the coupe-ish RS 7, the RS 6 stills draws admiring looks from car enthusiasts everywhere.
Audi RS 7 vs. Porsche Panamera
The Porsche Panamera's 911-inspired look up front combines with practical hatchback style and versatility in the back. If it sounds like the automotive equivalent of a mullet, don't be put off. The Panamera delivers exceptional performance, high levels of refinement and driver engagement, and utility. It's substantially more expensive than the RS 7 and doesn't make the same kind of power, nor is it as roomy. But unique style and impeccable pedigree make the Panamera seriously lust-worthy.
Audi RS 7 vs. BMW M5
Gobs of power from its own turbocharged V8 and similar levels of luxury refinement make the M5 a natural competitor with the RS 7, and at a far lower price. The M5 is slightly quicker than last year's RS 7 (0-60 mph in 3.2 seconds compared to 3.3 seconds, respectively, in our testing), but that could change with the 2024 RS 7's increased power output. The Audi has a practical advantage with its liftgate and cargo capacity, but the BMW is a little roomier for passengers.
