2024 Mercedes-Benz eSprinter

Whether you're a business looking to make your van fleet green or a camper who wants to conquer the wilderness in a more eco-friendly ride, the 2024 Mercedes-Benz eSprinter can satisfy the task. At its core, the eSprinter is just like a regular Sprinter cargo van, with two exceptions. It has an enormous 113-kWh battery slung under the bowling-alley-like floor, and there's an electric motor powering the rear wheels. Towing and payload capacities are less than with the Mercedes' diesel-powered sibling, but the eSprinter is just as maneuverable, spacious and well equipped.

At present, there is only one other all-electric cargo van: the Ford E-Transit. Depending on body style, it offers between 143 and 159 miles on a charge according to Ford. But the eSprinter's larger battery provides a little over 200 miles of range. There are two other main differences, though. First, the Transit offers multiple roof heights, whereas the 2024 eSprinter provides only a long-wheelbase, high-roof option. That changes next model year, but it is what it is for 2024. Second, the price. The 2024 eSprinter starts about $20,000 higher than the E-Transit — you're paying a premium for the bigger pack, spiffy interior and three-pointed star on the front.

Most new cars have selectable drive modes that make the driving experience zestier, but the eSprinter's are intended to help increase driving range. Assuming you go for the high-output electric motor, the standard Comfort mode offers all 201 horsepower. Economic mode cuts drive power to 67% or about 134 hp and limits the potency of the climate control system. Maximum Range really drops the anchor, reducing power to 53% or about 107 hp. It will be very slow, but it'll also offer, as the name suggests, maximum range. Ultimately, if your typical working day or outdoor adventure looks like it's going to constantly require Maximum Range mode, the eSprinter may not be for you — especially if you're also going to press up against the 2,624-pound payload limit. Making matters worse, it can only fast-charge at a max of 50 kW, with an optional upgrade available to a still subpar 115 kW. But for most owners using an eSprinter for work around town and charging at night, the 200-plus miles of range it offers should be enough to get you through normal business hours.
