The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE is Mercedes' midsize luxury SUV. Mercedes redesigned it last year, and ever since it's maintained a top spot in our rankings because of its high levels of luxury, refinement and technology. This year, Mercedes is expanding the GLE's lineup with the performance-focused AMG GLE 53 and 63 S variants. Edmunds Expert Rating

Great
8.4
out of 10
We drove the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class on our test track and on real roads. Our Edmunds team conducts rigorous independent vehicle testing, driving 500,000 miles a year.
Performance
8/10
How does the GLE-Class drive? Even the base four-cylinder provides sufficient thrust. The GLE 350 we tested accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in 7.1 seconds, which is an average time for this class of SUV. Braking performance is likewise strong, and the brakes are easy to control in everyday driving.
Steering effort is light, but steering is precise, and the GLE stays stable and flat while cornering. The transmission definitely favors economical driving, but shifts are a little harsh for a luxury vehicle, even when you're only light on the throttle. Overall, the GLE is capable and confident, even if it's not meant to be a sporty option.

Comfort
7.5/10
How comfortable is the GLE-Class? The GLE's interior is serene and quiet, and the front seats with available massage provide terrific comfort. The rear seats don't slide or recline but remain pleasant for the long haul. Our test vehicle had the optional Acoustic package, and we found it kept exterior sounds well muted. The climate control system is likewise strong. You can just set it and forget it, and the heated and cooled cupholders and the heated armrests are bonuses.
The biggest issue we have is the optional air suspension. There's a floatiness at highway speeds that's a little disconcerting plus a lot of extraneous minor body motions. Bumps are impactful too. We encourage shoppers to drive vehicles with the air and standard suspension back to back.

Interior
9/10
How’s the interior? The GLE's cabin is close to perfect, exhibiting excellent usability and build quality that is second to none. It's also quite roomy, with plenty of leg- and headroom for second-row passengers. The driving position offers a commanding view of the road and plenty of adjustability, and the controls are within easy reach. Visibility is excellent, with clear sight lines all around.
We like the GLE's intuitive touchpad controller. Functions such as track/preset skipping, home and back are right on the pad, and it has useful haptic feedback. But the steering wheel touchpads are too easy to brush inadvertently.

Technology
9.5/10
How’s the tech? Mercedes' MBUX infotainment system sets a new bar for functionality. It's easy to use and robust to the point you can alter just about every car setting through it. The optional Burmester audio system has a surround-sound option that fully envelops the driver in hi-fi lusciousness. You'll want to crank up every song for an immersive experience — too bad max volume isn't higher.
Another neat feature is the nav system's (optional) augmented reality feature that overlays street names and arrows atop a live front-view video when making turns. For safety, a number of driving aids are standard. Semi-automated driving features are available through the Driver Assistance package. We found the features easy to use, and they helped reduce fatigue in stop-and-go traffic.

Storage
8.5/10
How’s the storage? The GLE's sizable cabin is well designed. Cubbies and compartments abound for stashing drinks and items. The cargo area is large and flat with no wheelwell intrusion. Max cargo room is among the best in the midsize luxury SUV class. And the GLE's max towing capacity, even with the four-cylinder engine, is similarly strong. The back seat has four easy-to-access car seat anchors, and there's plenty of room for even the bulkiest child safety seats.
Fuel Economy
6.5/10
How’s the fuel economy? The EPA rates the GLE 350 4Matic at 22 mpg combined (19 city/26 highway), which is average for a base-level midsize luxury SUV. Notably, the GLE 450 gives up only 1 mpg combined and for an extra 100 hp.
Value
8/10
Is the GLE-Class a good value? You get what you pay for in the GLE, but you will pay quite a lot, with well-optioned models coming in around $70,000. Still, the overall impression of quality is exceptional. The four-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty is average, but the same coverage for the powertrain is less than what most competitors offer.
Wildcard
8.5/10
While the GLE has decent performance chops, it's really the feeling of luxurious quality, in everything from the design to materials to technology features, that sells this SUV. It's far and away the best in class, with several features you won't find in rivals. Pair those with rich, sumptuous materials and you have a cabin second to none. Sure, it's not as sporty to drive as some top competitors, but in most other areas the GLE is setting new benchmarks.
2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class trim level differences
The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class is a midsize luxury SUV with five available trim levels: GLE 350, GLE 450, GLE 580, AMG GLE 53 and AMG GLE 63 S. All trim levels come standard with all-wheel drive (4Matic in Mercedes-Benz speak) with the exception of the GLE 350, which comes in your choice of rear- or all-wheel drive. All GLE models come standard with five-passenger seating but can be optioned with three rows to seat seven people, with the exception of the AMG GLE 63 S, which is five-passenger only.
Which GLE-Class trim does Edmunds recommend?
For not a whole lot of extra money than the entry-level four-cylinder GLE, we'd strongly recommend the GLE 450. The 450 upgrades you to a strong and smooth six-cylinder engine that's also respectably fuel-efficient. To that we'd add the Premium package (premium audio system, surround-view camera) and the Driver Assistance Package Plus (an array of extra safety features).

2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class GLE 350 4MATIC 4dr SUV AWD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 9A)
The vehicle is amazing. Almost everything is great, so I will only mention a few points. I have a GLC and a GLE. The engine noise in the GLE is much louder, even though they have identical engines. As such, if you can, I would recommend opting for the 6 cylinder over the 4 cylinder, for a quieter ride. Also the factory missed a part (a door sill) during assembly, which was a little … concerning. I also think Mercedes makes things more complicated than they have to be. Specifically, they make the cars technology so you can do the same thing from 3 different sources. This might seem cool, but it makes for too many options. Other than that, I would highly recommend.

2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class GLE 350 4MATIC 4dr SUV AWD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 9A)
Was hesitant regarding purchasing the GLE 350 because of it’s 4 banger engine. Decided to go with it after an extensive test drive. This engine is not quick from a dead stop, however in more than 95% of all real world driving situations it will surpass your expectations. The interior is by far best in class, making the BMW X5 , and the Lexus RX seem a generation behind. Ride quality is … exceptionally comfortable, and initial quality was excellent. I’ve only had the GLE for a month and a half. As with all German luxury brands, resale value is poor, however this doesn’t seem to matter as much on a lease. I just feel good when driving my GLE, and isn’t that what its really all about.
UPDATE: This is an update after now owning the GLE for nearly 20 months. The GLE remains a vehicle that I would definitely recommend. It has provided me with reliable service and a surprisingly high fun factor. No issues to report except there is a whistling sound at highway speeds coming from the driver’s side mirror. Others have reported the same issue. Fuel filler door was not perfectly flush with the exterior, this seems to have perhaps remedied itself or I just don’t notice it as much. I keep transmission in ECONOMY mode, it provides for smoother downshifting.
If given the choice at this moment, I would definitely buy this vehicle again.

2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class GLE 450 4MATIC 4dr SUV AWD (3.0L 6cyl Turbo gas/electric mild hybrid 9A)
The SUV has plenty of power, beauty but the down shifting of the 9 speed is not smooth. Our 2021 BMW x5 8 speed transmission is very smooth. The GLE has a softer ride than our BMW. I have only 900 miles on my new 2021 GLE and dash has squeaks and minor vibrations over an uneven road surface. The dealer had no luck in correcting them. I am looking for another opinion/solution . The … heads up display is large but the reflection from the unit at peak sun periods provides bright spots/small light streaks on the windshield from the CRT corners. If you have the Acoustic Comfort Package, the windshield Infrared reflecting Film creates a dash board reflection in the windshield even when the dash color is black. I would not recommend the Acoustic Package due to the UV film reflection of the dash board. The service manager at my dealership was surprised to see that affect as well. The light streaks appear to be coming from the dust cover for the heads up display unit onto the windshield. No solution other than removing the dust cover in my opinion. The BMW heads up display on my wife's 2021 X3 appears to have a much cleaner install and the display is a less busy graphic/s display. You can not reduce the size of the graphics on the GLE. No light streaks on the BMW version of the heads up display. The factory installed Dash Cam works great, however you must enable it every time you start the car first then open the Mercedes Apps in the MBUX system. I was also surprised the GLE 450 now comes with Cooper Tires (Discoverer) The jury is still out on their performance, comfort, tread wear. As I continue to drive this SUV I found another item that is frustrating, the windshield wipers. There are very noisy during operation and change direction very hard. The jury maybe coming in with a verdict very soon. Currently the Cooper Tires are wearing fast and some rubber is peeling off. The tires have 13000 miles on them. These tires are no conducive for a luxury SUV. The vibration at the dash cover still exist depending on road conditions. In lieu of all of this the GLE 450 is the best SUV I have driven.

2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class GLE 580 4MATIC 4dr SUV AWD (4.0L 8cyl Turbo gas/electric mild hybrid 9A)
Paid 90K for a top of the line GLE 580, performance and comfort the car was amazing, super fast and pretty fun to drive. Electronically it’s a nightmare, the car would randomly not start, in the year I owned it it was at the dealership 4 times for this issue with no resolution, sometimes taking over a week of just sitting at the dealership. Other fun features included the speedometer … screen going completely blank repeatedly, the windshield wipers going on randomly, the audio not working at all, the car not shutting off, engine light (dealer claims no codes came up)
My 11 year old Cadillac with 130K miles was more reliable then this hunk of junk. Bought new, owned it for a year, good riddance.
