2024 GMC HUMMER EV SUV

The Hummer name is an icon, so there was a lot of anticipation when General Motors announced the brand would be revived under the GMC umbrella as an all-electric off-roader. The new 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV follows the related Hummer EV pickup and shares everything that makes the truck interesting, from the available tri-motor powertrain to the removable roof panels to the larger-than-life road presence. The SUV also shares the pickup's eye-watering price tag, and it's far from efficient for an electric vehicle, but there's nothing quite like the Hummer EV on the road today.

The Hummer EV SUV really has only one direct competitor: the Rivian R1S. It's smaller and less expensive than the Hummer EV while offering more electric range and very similar off-road capabilities. We think the interior is nicer, too, especially for the money. But if you don't need something with all that off-road capability, electric SUVs like the BMW iX, Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV and Tesla Model X offer better comfort, more luxurious interiors, and more impressive tech for less money than the Hummer.

Plenty of SUVs look tough but can't quite deliver when it comes to off-roading. The new Hummer EV isn't one of those vehicles, delivering on its looks with some real off-road prowess. The Hummer EV SUV features 10.2 inches of ground clearance in its Normal mode, but that can be increased to a full 16 inches when using the available Extract mode. That mode also increases approach, departure and breakover angles, and the SUV's shorter wheelbase means it's a bit more nimble than its pickup truck sibling. The Hummer can automatically air down its tires to a preset pressure for better traction, and a trick CrabWalk mode uses the four-wheel steering system to drive at an angle for improved maneuverability. Additionally, the SUV gets a full-size spare tire, something that's not available on the Hummer EV pickup.
