Overview

The luxury compact SUV segment is packed with excellent competitors from various premium brands, but the one Scandinavian model on the list doesn't blend in with its rivals. Since its 2018 redesign, the Volvo XC60 has set itself apart with its unique headlights and taillights, tasteful body lines, and an uncluttered, upscale interior made of high-quality materials. The Swede, though, doesn't have the handling chops of some of its rivals or the softest ride.

As with most premium SUVs, the XC60 hauls the family around in comfort, provides a useful amount of cargo space, and comes standard with a long list of advanced driver aids such as automatic emergency braking and evasive steering assist. Sizewise, the XC60 slots in between the smaller XC40 and larger XC90 SUVs. The XC60 also has a performance variant like its German rivals (BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC, Audi Q5) do. It's the Polestar Engineered model that's based on the plug-in hybrid Recharge T8 version.
For the 2022 model year, Volvo refreshed the XC60 with reworked front and rear fascias and updated engines. There's also a new Google-based infotainment system that features Google Assistant, Google Maps and Google Play. Under the hood, Volvo has added a new mild hybrid system to the XC60's engines. It helps to slightly improve fuel economy — by about 1-2 mpg compared to last year — and smooth out the engine automatic stop-start feature when you're at stoplights.
The XC60's plug-in hybrid model, the Recharge, also gets a midyear update that includes a higher-capacity battery and a more powerful rear electric motor. The combination provides more power — a heady 455 horsepower — plus the ability to drive around 36 miles on a full charge, which is quite good for a plug-in hybrid. Recharging frequently can really help reduce your use of gasoline.
Overall, we recommend the XC60 and find it a competitive choice among other small luxury SUVs including the Acura RDX, BMW X3, Genesis GV70 and Mercedes-Benz GLC.
2022 Volvo XC60 trim level differences
The Volvo XC60 is a compact luxury SUV. The base B5 engine is offered in Momentum, R-Design and Inscription trims. The upgraded B6 engine can be paired with the R-Design or Inscription trim. The base trim for the plug-in hybrid Recharge model is the Inscription Expression trim, and the R-Design and Inscription trims are also available. The top Polestar Engineered trim gets some performance enhancements to complement the Recharge T8 powertrain. Here's what you need to know:
Which XC60 trim does Edmunds recommend?
Many people will be happy with the base but well-equipped Momentum trim because it has a lot to offer for the price. The R-Design is a decent choice as well considering its extra features and sportier look. Either way, make sure to get one with the optional Advance package if you want traffic-adaptive cruise control. As for the engines, the B5 has enough power for the average driver.

2022 Volvo XC60 B6 Inscription 4dr SUV AWD (2.0L 4cyl Twincharger gas/electric mild hybrid 8A)
First, the pros: Extremely comfortable & luxurious seating. Love the heated/ventilated seats & heated steering wheel for my painful hands. It is very quiet. The arrangement of the AC vents prevents you from having frozen hands as a driver and the vent in the rear door column provides extra vents to back seat passengers. It is the most comfortable car I've ever driven on a roadtrip. The … interior is lovely, if minimalistic. It offers Apple Car Play, which I like, although it is a wired connection. When the Google map app works, it is decent. Having owned Acura, Infinit & BMW(2016 - newest of these) vehicles, all of their navigation and infotainment systems were far superior. Now for the cons: the rotors had to be replaced before I even took the car home because braking was jittery. I was informed that this is extremely common due to shipping from overseas. Hmmmm. I've had cars that were made overseas and didn't need new rotors til around 70K miles. Constant problems with the Google Assistant/infotainment system, which when it malfunctions, can shut off your AC/heat. Then, the GPS signal is randomly lost. You have to keep rebooting the system, which may temporarily fix the problems, but they always return. One could also argue it is unreasonable for a driver to have to reboot the system that controls the whole car frequently while driving. I'm certainly discussing this with Volvo. Mine has been back to the dealer twice in the first 2 months of ownership and will be going again next week (11 weeks from purchase) - all for problems related to Google Assistant (an Android system). To adjust the temperature, you have to use the touch screen for it to actually adjust, and it only adjusts by 2 degrees, not single digits. Voice control doesn't work. Too many controls realistically must go through the touch screen because the voice control is unreliable. Having a few buttons would solve that issue & be safer.
Volvo's strength is not tech. Their Google Assistant system is enough to ruin what would otherwise be a wonderful car. I do not recommend any Volvo that contains Google Assistant.
UPDATE: I pursued the Lemon Law because the Google/Android system was constantly malfunctioning to the point I didn’t feel safe driving the car. It would require multiple reboots, during which you lose all controls, so it is necessary to pull off the road. Sometimes I had to reboot multiple times plus restart the car. The backup camera would freeze. It auto-braked inappropriately, which could have caused a crash. When the system functions as it should, it is exceptional. I am an early-adopter of new tech and love it in cars. If Volvo ever gets the system to function properly and consistently, it will be fantastic. The dealership had my car almost 2 of the 5 months I had it. I believe they really tried to fix it. Volvo bought the car back from me, for which I am grateful. We settled before arbitration. I had planned to get a BMW X3 to replace the Volvo, but walked away as soon as I learned they are also incorporating a Google/Android system & eliminating manual controls. When a screen alone controls everything, you end up with a brick when it malfunctions. Voice control stops working when the Google system fails. I won’t buy another car that doesn’t have at least some key controls as buttons/knobs.
So many problems with the software....

2022 Volvo XC60 B5 R-Design 4dr SUV (2.0L 4cyl Turbo gas/electric mild hybrid 8A)
I am very disappointed with my new 2022 Volvo XC60. I was not told about these "problems" until after I wrote a check for the vehicle and was ready to drive off the lot. Most disappointing is the 360 camera. I only wanted a car with the 360 view like my previous Audi. When you are backing up the only camera that comes on is the rear camera. It's a split screen so I should have the … rear camera on the bottom portion and the 360 on the top portion of the screen but it is blank. You must manually turn on the 360 when you need it the most. This does not make the vehicle safer! I have to take my eyes off of the road and figure out how to get the 360 every time I want to back into a parking space etc. There is still no AppleCarPlay. I was told when I purchased in September that it would be about 2 months before the software upgrade would support AppleCarPlay. Still not there as of today. I just got a software upgrade around the holidays that finally gave me satellite radio. There is a software bug that requires me to reboot the entire info system almost every time I use the satellite radio. The problem is that the banner or title for which music is being played gets stuck on the last song I listened to and when you change stations, you get the same song displayed. You must reboot to fix. That takes several minutes and the air conditioning stops working as well. Quite frankly, they should start paying me for the services they offer but do not have. I am very frustrated as I paid a lot of money for this "luxury" car. Will probably never buy another Volvo. So very disappointed. All these problems makes it unsafe to drive because I am constantly trying to fix or figure out a fix for one problem or another. Most all of these problems should be a simple software fix but Volvo is not on top of it.
Infotainment System Improved, but Still Needs Work
4 out of 5 starsDisappointed and Dismayed, 10/03/2021
2022 Volvo XC60 B6 Inscription 4dr SUV AWD (2.0L 4cyl Twincharger gas/electric mild hybrid 8A)
Volvo has clearly made an effort to work with Google to improve the content available through its new infotainment system, which has provided more capabilities than initially delivered and led to an improvement in our overall rating. A 5-star car otherwise, the infotainment system still is somewhat quirky and frequently counter-intuitive. Google Navigation works very well, but the … satellite radio / app functions still require much more attention than safe-driving protocols should warrant. For an automobile company as safety-conscious as Volvo, these deficiencies are especially troublesome and disturbing.
Thus, even though we can upgrade our overall rating of this car to a 4 (from a 2 previously), there is still a good bit of room for improvement.
Though we love Volvo’s subscription program and loved our 2021 XC60, the 2022 model substitutes a Google-developed infotainment system for the proprietary Volvo system in its earlier models … and it is a disaster! No SiriusXM, no Apple CarPlay, and extremely limited selections to add Apps from the Google Play Store (no Amazon Music, no Overcast podcasting app, and who knows what else). One has to wonder how such obvious shortcomings were allowed to proceed into production. Hasn’t Volvo ever heard of “back-testing” its changes?
And what’s worse is that when I queried BOTH the dealership and Volvo Customer Service on when these shortcomings would be addressed, their answers were the same: “we don’t know”.
Now, to be sure, I should have done better research before we started a new subscription, but that’s MY problem … but if I can help others avoid my same mistake, that will be some consolation.
Don’t buy

2022 Volvo XC60 B5 Inscription 4dr SUV (2.0L 4cyl Turbo gas/electric mild hybrid 8A)
Constant electronic issues. Google infotainment is junk. Cars dash is lit up like a Christmas tree with only 3k miles on it. Dealer promised excellent customer support before purchasing. We never received a return phone call for a service appointment. Today the wipers failed. Another light added to take in for service. I didn’t buy a new car for the purpose of running back and forth to … the dealer for repairs.
