Overview
The 2024 Volvo S90 may lack the pizzazz of better-known rivals, but it has no shortage of comfort and elegance that make it one of today's top luxury sedans. Volvo is among the few automakers still committed to sedans (and, nobly, sport wagons) and the flagship S90 makes a compelling alternative to SUVs — even to Volvo's very good XC series — with its seating for five, acres of legroom, advanced driver aids and cool, modern take on luxury. The S90 also stands out as one of the only big sedans with a rechargeable plug-in model. If you prefer pleasantries to outright performance, the S90 deserves a close look.

EPA Estimated Electric Range
The S90 will automatically switch to gas when the electric battery is low.Electric cars typically experience 1-2% of range loss per year with slightly faster degradation over the first 50,000 miles as the car settles into its long term state, according to Recurrent's study of 15,000 EVs.
Estimated range mapThis map is a visual representation of the possible one-way and round-trips by this vehicle (on a full charge) from the geometric center of Ashburn, Virginia. The depicted ranges are based on the estimated new vehicle range value provided by the EPA, rounded down to miles for one-way and miles for round-trip. Actual range will vary depending on the condition of this vehicle’s battery pack, how you drive, driving conditions and other factors.
240V Home ChargingEstimated total charging time when using a 240V outlet. This is either a 3-prong or 4-prong outlet used for appliances, for example a clothes dryer.
EV batteries should be kept at 30-80% charged to extend battery life.
8 yrs or 100,000 milesHybrid batteries are federally mandated to carry at least 8 years or 100,000 miles of warranty coverage from the manufacturer. Batteries that lose capacity more rapidly than expected should be eligible for replacement under warranty. Coverage of additional hybrid components beyond the battery itself will vary by automaker.
According to GeoTab’s data, if the observed degradation rates are maintained, the vast majority of batteries will outlast the usable life of the vehicle.

In the world of European luxury, Volvo sets its own pace. The S90 sedan isn't particularly athletic or visceral like its Audi or BMW competitors, and its soft suspension and steering feel won't inspire imaginary racetrack heroics. Instead, the S90 is all about interior quality and refinement, its cabin trimmed in soft leather, wood and textured metal and with some of the most comfortable seats you'll find in any car. And with the S90's extra length — 4 to 6 inches longer than most rivals, but about a foot shorter than luxury full-sizers like the BMW 7 Series — there's ample room to stretch out. The S90's most distinguishing feature, however, might be its plug-in hybrid Recharge version. With 38 miles of electric range, more than 450 horsepower and a 0-60 mph sprint in 4.6 seconds, the Recharge infuses the lineup with some much-needed vigor. So far, only BMW offers a plug-in answer to the Volvo, with the forthcoming 550e set to replace the outgoing 530e.
Competitors to consider
Buyers looking for midsize luxury have options. The Mercedes-Benz E-Class is our top-rated pick for its smooth ride and refined interior, qualities also shared with the Volvo. But the Benz's more responsive handling and seamless power give it an edge on the S90. The BMW 5 Series and Audi A6 and A7 sedans also offer more vibrant dynamic ability. Other rivals such as the Cadillac CT5, Genesis G80 and Lexus ES deliver similar features and polish and similarly sedate performance. The S90 Recharge stands almost alone, however. The forthcoming BMW 550e is the only other luxury midsize plug-in hybrid. It will replace the current 530e model with performance that more closely matches the S90: 483 hp and around 40 miles of electric range.

edmunds TESTED
The Volvo S90 is cooly understated. It's powerful and fuel-efficient, but its clean design doesn't advertise its performance or eco credentials. It's also spacious and comfortable, with a handsome interior and a smooth ride.
How does the S90 drive? We tested the Volvo S90 with the plug-in hybrid powertrain, which Volvo calls the Recharge. That means there's both a gasoline engine and a battery pack that allows for an estimated 38 miles of all-electric range. Acceleration is quick and relatively smooth, and there's plenty of power for passing on the highway, though it sometimes takes the transmission a second to kick down a gear. It's easy to come to a smooth stop, and the brakes are strong enough to give you confidence in panic situations.
This isn't a sport sedan, but the S90 Recharge feels composed on winding roads. The steering lacks road feel but is light and direct, which helps make parking a breeze too.
Comfort
8.5/10
How comfortable is the S90? Volvo's seats remain some of the best around. Soft but supportive padding is wrapped in great-feeling leather. There's a good bit of adjustment, and the S90 Recharge is available with heated and ventilated seats both front and rear. The S90's ride isn't quite as insulating as some other luxury cars, but bumps in the road are muted rather than amplified. The climate control system works quickly and quietly.

2024 Volvo S90 Plug-in Hybrid pricing in Ashburn, VA
How’s the interior? The S90 splits the difference in size between midsize and full-size luxury cars. There's acres of rear seat room, with plenty of space for passengers well over 6 feet tall to stretch out. Headroom is equally ample, helped by the bucket-style seats. The low seats make getting in and out a bit of a climb, but the large doors mean it's easy to swing your legs in. It's not difficult to find a relaxed, comfortable driving position that places most controls within reach. Visibility is generally good too, though the rear window is a bit narrow.
Technology
8.0/10
How’s the tech? The S90 Recharge is loaded with just about all of the tech and driver aids we expect from a modern luxury car.
The vertically oriented touchscreen greatly simplifies the control layout since there are hardly any physical buttons. But some commonly used features are buried multiple screens deep. Interface quibbles aside, the XC60's Google integration is generally pleasing, including Google Assistant voice controls and an impressive Google Maps display. One high note is the excellent audio system. It's clear and loud, but it doesn't get buzzy or mushy when pushed.
Volvo has always focused on safety, and the S90 comes with a good suite of driver aids such as blind-spot warning and automatic emergency braking as standard equipment. The suite is not as refined as some we've experienced, but it wasn't throwing up any red flags either.
Storage
7.5/10
How’s the storage? The S90 Recharge might have more passenger space than its rivals, but it falls short when it comes to cargo space. The 13.5-cubic-foot trunk is one of the smallest in the class, but the space itself is wide and low, so you can utilize what's available. The rear seats do fold down in a 60/40 split, which helps open up the rear at the cost of a seat or two. Storage up front isn't great either. The center console is shallow and can't even fit a pair of sunglasses. The door pockets are fine but don't fully make up for the lack of storage elsewhere.
Getting a car seat in and out is a much easier task. You'll have plenty of space to move around while installing or removing a seat. Anchors are easily accessible, and the copious legroom is a boon for rear-facing seats.
Fuel Economy
8.5/10
How’s the fuel economy? The S90 Recharge is a plug-in hybrid. The EPA estimates that it can drive about 38 miles on on all-electric power before switching over to regular hybrid operation. We've also found that Volvo's Recharge plug-in hybrid powertrain is capable of meeting or exceeding the EPA's estimates for fuel economy in real-world driving.
Value
8.5/10
Is the S90 a good value? The S90 Recharge really shines here. It offers more passenger room, more standard features and far more power than any rival at its price. The gap increases when you stack it up against some plug-in hybrid SUVs. And it's not like Volvo was cutting corners elsewhere. The interior is handsome and clean, with excellent wood and leather trim and interesting touches.
Volvo offers a four-year/50,000-mile basic and powertrain warranty. Additionally, Volvo includes four years/unlimited miles of roadside assistance and three years/36,000 miles of free maintenance. That's as good as or better than coverage offered on just about every other plug-in hybrid around.
Wildcard
8.5/10
This Swede oozes cool charm. Plus, the Recharge version has an appealing combo of up to 455 hp and 38 miles of all-electric range. The fact that it's wrapped is such a clean and conservative design makes it a bit of a sleeper. It's not the most engaging or athletic luxury car on the road, but it's far from boring. It stands out without standing out.
Which S90 does Edmunds recommend?
Although the base model S90 Plus offers plenty of standard equipment, we think the relatively small jump to the S90 Ultimate is worth it. A hands-free power trunklid, ventilated front seats with memory settings, and an upgraded audio system are worthy upgrades to the daily drive, while premium leather and nicer interior materials (crystal glass shifter, wrapped soft-touch panels) are indulgences that also make the Ultimate a good value. We'd also try to stretch for the S90 Recharge model for its extra power, electric range and impressive fuel efficiency: 74 mpge and 31 mpg during regular gas-engine operation.

66 MPGeMPGe is the official metric that the EPA uses to measure the efficiency of alternative-fuel (including electric) vehicles. Just like regular MPG shows how far a car will travel on one gallon of gas, MPGe shows how far a vehicle will drive on 33.7kWh of electricity - the energy equivalent of one gallon of gasoline. Combined MPGe is the combined total of 45% city MPGe + 55% highway MPGe.
