If you're looking for a comfortable, well-appointed all-electric luxury car with lots of in-car tech and a full suite of driver aids, the 2024 Electrified G80 is well worth consideration. The handsome interior is spacious and more comfortable than the cabins of some far more expensive rivals, though the battery's placement limits trunk space and overall utility. That battery does provide plenty of power on the street and helped the G80 exceed its EPA estimates in Edmunds' real-world range testing. It's not the sportiest EV out there, but overall we like Genesis' comfortable electrified sedan.Read full review

Pros
- Excellent EPA-estimated and real-world electric range
- Lots of standard features and a comprehensive warranty
- Comfortable and spacious interior
- Electric powertrain provides plenty of power
Cons
- Cargo space is extremely limited
- Not as much fun to drive as other electric cars
What's new
- The Genesis Electrified G80 returns unchanged for 2024
- Part of the second G80 generation introduced for 2021
Overview
The G80 is Genesis' midsize luxury sedan, filling the gap between the smaller G70 and larger G90 sedans. It was last redesigned in 2021, but last year the lineup expanded to include an all-electric variant. The Electrified G80 showcases just how well an electric powertrain pairs with luxury sedans, allowing for nearly silent cruising and plentiful power for quick acceleration. As with other Genesis vehicles, the Electrified G80 holds an advantage over its European rivals by offering many more features at a lower price while maintaining high levels of comfort and refinement.

Edmunds Tested RangeEdmunds begins with a full battery charge and drives the vehicle on a mix of city and highway roads (approximately 60% city, 40% highway) until the battery is almost entirely empty. (We target 10 miles of remaining range for safety.) The miles traveled and the indicated remaining range are added together for the Edmunds Tested Range figure.
EV batteries lose 1-2% of range per year. Est. range for this car is 263 miles after 8 years.Electric cars typically experience 1-2% of range loss per year with slightly faster degradation over the first 50,000 miles as the car settles into its long term state, according to Recurrent's study of 15,000 EVs.
Estimated range mapThis map is a visual representation of the possible one-way and round-trips by this vehicle (on a full charge) from the geometric center of Ashburn, Virginia. The depicted ranges are based on the estimated new vehicle range value provided by the EPA, rounded down to miles for one-way and miles for round-trip. Actual range will vary depending on the condition of this vehicle’s battery pack, how you drive, driving conditions and other factors.

Edmunds spotlight: Plenty of range and quick charging
Range is one of the most significant hurdles for new EV shoppers to come to terms with, but the 2024 Genesis Electrified G80 puts some of that anxiety to rest with a solid EPA estimate of 282 miles on a single charge. Even better, we easily exceeded that figure in Edmunds' testing with a 309-mile result, which should be more than enough for most drivers. In the event you need to charge on a road trip, the G80 is capable of accepting some of the fastest DC fast-charging speeds to get you back on the road in as little as 22 minutes. To sweeten the deal, Genesis also includes free 30-minute charging sessions on the Electrify America network for three years.
Competitors to consider
Among the current crop of midsize luxury electric sedans, the new BMW i5 is our favorite. It's the strongest performer in the bunch yet still delivers an abundance of comfort. The Mercedes-Benz EQE favors comfort more than performance. Much like the Electrified G80, both of these alternatives easily exceeded their estimated range, returning more than 300 miles. You'll save quite a lot of money on a Genesis Electrified G80 over the German entries when equipped comparably, though some comfort and convenience drawbacks we point out in our Expert Rating below keep it from surpassing those rivals.

8/10
How does the Electrified G80 drive? The Electrified G80 isn't a sport sedan, and doesn't claim to be, but that doesn't mean it's disappointing to drive. On the contrary, the dual-motor setup helps the Electrified G80 hit 60 mph in 4.5 seconds. Some dual-motor rivals are quicker (the Tesla Model S, for instance) but you're not going to be left wanting. There's ample power to get you up to speed quickly and with no fuss.
While handling and steering aren't as sporty as what you get with the Porsche Taycan, the Electrified G80 feels composed on the road. The soft suspension and all-season tires keep cornering speeds relatively low, but you don't have to worry about the car rolling or wallowing in turns. The steering feels heavy in Sport but lightens up in other drive modes and at low speeds, making the Electrified G80 pretty easy to park given its dimensions. Unfortunately, the steering doesn't provide much in the way of feedback or road feel.
The brake pedal can feel a bit soft, but if you enjoy one-pedal driving, you don't have to use it all that often, as the Electrified G80 will bring you to a complete stop. If you do need to use the brake pedal, we found the Electrified G80 performed consistently well in our testing.

Comfort
8.5/10
How comfortable is the Electrified G80? Like its gas-powered twin, we found the Electrified G80's cabin comfortable. In fact, we think the electric version exceeds its twin in a few areas. The interior as a whole doesn't look all that different from the standard G80's, and we consider that a good thing. The standard heated and ventilated front seats offer great support in all directions. There's plenty of adjustment for the driver's seat too. The cushions are soft but not overly so. The rear seat is also comfortable, with effective support and an agreeable seatback angle.
The ride quality isn't quite as stellar as the seats. While it's compliant and comfortable most of the time, we felt more bumps and road imperfections than we expected given the Electrified G80's adaptive suspension that can scan the road ahead and adjust for things like potholes.
The standard three-zone climate control system is one of the better systems you'll find in a luxury car these days. Genesis uses dedicated controls for the climate control system rather than forcing every adjustment through the touchscreen. We appreciate that you can adjust the vents manually, too, rather than having to take your eyes off the road to interact with the touchscreen. While we complained about road and wind noise in the gas-powered G80, the electric model was much quieter on the road, with only a mild amount of wind noise at highway speeds.

Interior
8/10
How’s the interior? The Electrified G80's interior looks nearly identical to the gas-powered model's, and that's far from a bad thing in most respects. The G80 is spacious and the doors open wide, so getting in and out of either row is a nonissue for all but the tallest drivers. Space in both rows is excellent, too. The rear floor, though, sits higher than in the gas-powered model because of how the battery is mounted, meaning your knees sit a bit higher than you might expect. The driver's seat offers tons of adjustment, which makes finding a comfortable position pretty easy. That said, some editors felt like the seat didn't sit as low as they'd prefer.
Outward visibility is sufficient but not outstanding. The front and side windows are fairly large, but the rear glass is narrow and the rear pillars are thick. We appreciate the G80's blind-spot cameras and surround-view monitor, which help offset the visibility issues.
All of the controls, from those mounted on the steering wheel to those in the touchscreen, are basically identical to those in the gas-powered model. That's both a good and bad thing. The buttons are easy to see and reach without feeling cluttered. On the other hand, the touchscreen menus can feel somewhat busy, and the interface is not as intuitive as some rival systems. The reach to the touchscreen is a bit far to use it comfortably, so we appreciate that you can navigate using the console-mounted knob too. The steering wheel controls also aren't very clear, though we got used to them after a few days. There's a small learning curve but nothing insurmountable.

Technology
8/10
How’s the tech? The Electrified G80 comes loaded with just about every in-car tech feature and driver aid Genesis has to offer. For the most part, it all works well. The navigation system is clear and easy to read, with less clutter on the map than you'll see in some of its rivals. You can input directions using the touchscreen, knob or voice commands, though we don't really recommend using the voice controls. While there were no major issues, we had some challenges with the car understanding our inputs. It's simply not as easy or robust a system as the voice controls in, say, a Mercedes-Benz. The driver aids, too, are expansive but not the most refined. The adaptive cruise maintains appropriate gaps but is slow to speed back up. And we felt a bit of ping-ponging between the lane markers on tigher highway curves.
Genesis includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard equipment, though neither one is wireless. That's odd as there are cars half the price of the Electrified G80 (including some from Genesis' corporate siblings from Hyundai and Kia) that offer wireless smartphone connections. Also odd is the lack of USB-C, though there are two USB-A ports for each row of seats, plus a wireless charging pad.

Storage
7/10
How’s the storage? Storage and cargo space is the Electrified G80's weakest area. Cargo space on the regular G80 was already limited relative to some of the competition, and the electrified powertrain only worsens things. The battery takes up a significant amount of space in the trunk, dropping overall cargo space to just 10.8 cubic feet. There's a big hump in the back that reduces the trunk depth, and the rear seats don't fold flat. And because this isn't a dedicated EV platform, it lacks the front trunk you'll find on plenty of other EVs. The available space is wide and tall, so you won't have any issues fitting grocery bags in the back. Just don't expect sufficient trunk space for luggage for more than a couple of people.
Storage inside the cabin is much, much better. In fact, we think it's among the best you'll find in any luxury car, electric or not. The center console is long and deep, and there's a second bin in front of the cupholders. There are decent door pockets, too, so you don't have to use the cupholders for your phone or sunglasses.
Installing a car seat is a mixed bag. While we like how wide the door opens, the car seat anchors are buried and not the easiest to access or clip to. You have to futz with the headrests to get to the upper anchors. There's plenty of space once the seat is installed, though.

Range and Efficiency
8/10
How are the range and efficiency? The Electrified G80 uses an 87.2-kWh battery pack and offers an EPA-estimated 282 miles of range. You can get EVs with more range for less money, but they won't be as spacious inside or as well appointed as the Electrified G80.
We managed to beat the EPA figure in Edmunds' real-world EV range testing, traveling 309 miles on a single charge. While this wasn't the best distance we've seen, we were still impressed with the G80's showing. We measured consumption at 30.6 kWh/100 miles, better than we've seen from cars like the Porsche Taycan and Tesla Model S.

Value
8.5/10
Is the Electrified G80 a good value? The Electrified G80 starts at a little over $80,000 and comes fully loaded from the get-go, with everything from heated seats to all-wheel drive included as standard equipment. $80,000 might sound steep compared to some smaller luxury EVs, but it undercuts cars like the Porsche Taycan, Mercedes-Benz EQS and Tesla Model S. Expect to pay well over six figures if you want one of those models to match the G80 when it comes to an equivalent level of luxury features.
As with all Genesis cars, the Electrified G80 carries an excellent five-year/60,000-mile basic warranty and a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain and battery warranty. Genesis also throws in five years of roadside assistance, three years/36,000 miles of maintenance, and three years of free 30-minute charging at Electrify America stations.

Wildcard
8/10
For better or worse, the Electrified G80 looks basically identical to the gas-powered G80. It's a handsome design both inside and out. It looks premium without copying what you might see from other luxury automakers. But the fact that there's no real visual distinction between the electric and gas G80s might disappoint some. There's a lot to like with the Electrified G80, and we wish Genesis had done more to make it stand out in its lineup.
It's also not quite as fun to drive as some other electric cars. It's quick, and the car's copious low-end torque means you never lack power, but the G80 feels a bit soft and heavy when driven enthusiastically around corners. We wouldn't call it sloppy, but there are better options if you want something sporty with an electric drivetrain.

Which Electrified G80 does Edmunds recommend?
Since the 2024 Genesis G80 Electrified is only available in a single trim level, the only choice you need to make is color and if you want the optional Prestige package. Considering how many luxury and tech feature upgrades you get, we think it's well worth the extra expense.

2023 Genesis Electrified G80 4dr Sedan AWD (electric DD)
This is my third EV and I have only owned Electric Vehicles for the last 5 years starting with a Tesla Model S and this one is the BEST so far. A real looker inside and out, QUIET, Very Luxurious, unbelievably loaded with so many features, extras and safety technology, a 21 speaker Lexicon audio and lastly it's really economical to operate. Close to 300 miles of range (it actually … exceeds EPA rating in warmer weather) if you don't "hot dog" drive it! Plenty of power to get out of its way- in fact it can beat most common gas vehicles of the line :) This is everything a Tesla Model S should be; a true LUXURY Electric Vehicle. The Genesis Electrified G80 comes with an unparalleled FIVE (5) year bumper to bumper warranty and a TEN (10) year EV powertrain and battery warranty AND 3 years of FREE charging from Electrify America stations. Genesis has a really great EV luxury SEDAN in the Electrified G80 (not everyone wants to drive an SUV) that should be considered as a first choice when shopping the European EV brands that could cost you some $10, 20, 30 THOUSAND Dollars or more and not get the same level of luxury, features or technology as the Genesis G80 EV.
