  • One VERY happy customer...

5 out of 5 starsby cliffe on 10/07/2010

After doing my do diligence researching dealership reviews and seeing the few previous posters reviews, I was a little leary, but I never make a purchase of this kind...or amount..without thoroughly researching both price and product quality. After talking with someone at a dealership in Wellesley, and another at Minute Man, we were pleasantly suprised to find a straightforward, highly knowledgeable, non "Salesmany" salesman here by the name of Bob Strickland. We had already decided on a 2010 TDI sportwagen for the expecting missus (GREAT safety/reliability/durability AND resale values), and were trolling the various dealerships for a dealership we felt was as "honest" as one of these places can be...Out of the four we went to, this one was the winner. There was no real haggling involved, unlike the previous posters obvious bad experience some time ago, nothing was pushed on us as for closing the deal quickly or even extended warranty coverage. However, make no mistake, Bob nows these cars...has been with the VW family close to a dozen years apparently, and walked us through what makes these TDI's as great as they are...AND the kinds of things long term that said warranty coverage will take care of just in case. Not pushy ....just looking to make sure we know the details. He gave us actual Kelley Blue Book for our trade without one of those whole "lemme go talk to my manager" back and forth, leave you waiting sessions that most salespeople are trained to do...was a late evening and my wife is 8 months pregnant...she was tired and he knew it. Well, He called back after we worked out a deal for the 2010 and told us if we were interested, he could put us into a 2011, same color and options...for a little LESS! Needless to say we were appreciative...so much so that after spending the last week getting 43.5 MPG...BEFORE the engine even brakes in, I'll be trading in my Jeep Rubicon this weekend to Bob, Tony the sales manager and the Colonial dealership family for a TDI sportwagen of my own! They even agreed to fix an "acorn" type ding in the hood I hadn't noticed on the previous day pickup of the vehicle. The cars are obviously great...have owned a GTI, Jetta and a sibling, an Audi A4 in the past...unfortunately for me, purchased years ago at a different Boston area dealership...Very different experience. My wife loves this car, and we were and ARE both treated exceptionally well here...Have not experienced the service department yet, but Bob was sure to introduce the entire staff so we'd feel comfortable leaving our new VW babies with them....again...for the record, could not have had a better buying experience.

  • worst car buying experience- rude people

    1 out of 5 starsby rm_poed on 10/20/2009

The sales manager and the person selling extended warranty were extremely rude. The sales manager, Bill, was bullying us and threatening to return the car to their other location because we were not moving fast enough to his liking. The car had been sitting at another location for 10 months. He was ready to send it to auction and lose money, instead of giving us the car at the price we asked for. He was just a [violative content deleted] person. The extended warranty person did not like us asking valid questions about the warranty, told us we were hostile and walked out without answering questions. Nothing like not knowing what you are selling or more like scamming! We were purchasing a used car which was listed way above blue book. They supposed researched it and gave us another price but when we started the dealing, somehow they quoted us wrong and should have been a higher price but they were "willing" to let it go at the quoted price. We were given a quote on the extended warranty but when we decided to purchase, they somehow quoted us the wrong price but they were "willing" to let it go at the quote price. Then they assured us that the ECU was covered under the warranty, even though it was in the list of covered items. They supposedly called their claims person and confirmed the ECU was covered. We called the extended warranty provided and sure enough it was not covered. But, for an additonal $200 we could get the VW Gold warranty. It was painful to ask question of the salesperson. For every question he would disappear for about 15 minutes, come bak with an answer (a lie from the sales manager), go back when more questions.... aand on like that for hours. We decided after having dealt with their rude attitute and "making mistakes" on every step of the deal, to give it up. I hate to see what service would have been like. I will never puchase anything from them. If you do, double check and question everything they tell you and give you to sign. They are [violative content deleted].

  • very poor sales experience

2.6 out of 5 starsby josefk on 02/22/2008

I recently purchased a 2007 Hyundai Tucson from Colonial Volkswagon. The car was practically brand new, only 1,853 miles and was a good deal. We found the listing for our car through the internet, and drove up from Norwich CT to purchase it. We purchased the car on a Monday, and I was assured by the sales rep. that it would be ready by Thursday. However, when I called early Thursday afternoon to make sure the car was ready, it hadn't even been registered yet. If I hadn't called to remind them, I don't think it would have been done that day. Either way, I had to wait to pick up the car until 6:30 at night because it took them 3 whole business days to register it. On top of that, between the time I had bought the car on Monday and when I picked it up, 147 miles had been added onto my car. When I asked why, the sales rep told me they had to drive the car to CT to get the emissions tested. Upon further inquiries, I found out that was a lie- the emissions doesn't need to be tested until the car is over 4 years old according to CT state law. Then they said they had to drive the car to Putnam CT to register the car and do a vin verification. As far as I know, whenever I buy a car you don't need the actual car at the DMV to register it. My aunt has worked at the Norwich DMV for 19 years, and she says you can verify the vin over the phone or in person, but you don't need to see the actual vehicle. She has never visually verified a vehicle. Even if they drove my car to the Putnam DMV and back just to hand in paperwork and put plates on it, Putnam is only 43 miles from the dealership, so that would have taken 86 miles. How does that account for the other 60 or so miles put on my car after I purchased it? After speaking to the manager and asking why so many miles were put on my car needlessly after I had purchased it, the sales rep. called me back and told me to relax, that there were bigger things to worry about, like the soldiers dying in Iraq. I myself am an army veteran of 8 years, and served with friends who have died in Iraq. The sales associate's comments were rude and infammatory, and personally, Iraq has nothing to do with me inquiring as to why my car was driven around for 147 miles without a good reason. And when I picked it up, the car had dirt on it and only had half a tank of gas. I feel like Cameron on Ferris Bueler's Day Off. I will never go to this dealership again, nor would I recommend it to anyone.

  • Nice building, unfriendly managers

I just purchased a 2013 Golf from Colonial in Westford. I test drove in Wellesley and then called around to find the best price (offered by Atamian, and then matched by Colonial in Westford). My sales person, Chris, was friendly. Since there was only one vehicle in the area with the specifications that I wanted, the process was quick enough. The only drag was the business manager who processed my paperwork and took my check. I'd swear, for someone taking so much cash, she should be a little--MUCH-- nicer. When offering me an extended warranty, she did so verbally, with no paperwork-- I'd swear to purposely confuse me and pressure me into making a quick decision. She didn't volunteer any information, such as that I had until 3 years or 36k to add it later. When I said I wanted to call and check with a family member, she pressured me still further. I stood my ground, despite her threat that she had many other buyers waiting. Ultimately I declined. I believe she purposely misled me regarding the coverage offered by the standard warranty, suggesting it didn't cover major issues with the drive train (it does). When I returned the next day to drop off a cashier's check, I was kept waiting over 45 minutes with nobody checking in after some friendly banter from another salesperson. The customer attention could be better, but it's similar to what I experienced at other VW dealerships. The best thing about this dealership is the beautiful building. It's huge and clean. It could only be improved with free coffee and munchies.

In all of my years in buying cars, I have never had a transaction occur this smoothly or quickly. Working with Tim B. was a delight, and Colonial VW deserves a tremendous amount of credit for putting its customer first. I have owned a Passat before, and that is why I came back to VW.
  • Great sales team; subpar finance group

Peter E. is a top-rate individual which results in him being a top-rate sales person. He is knowledgeable, courteous, responsive and polite. He understood our needs and did not try to sell us something we did not want. He went out of his way to make sure we were comfortable, and he exudes honesty. I would recommend him without any hesitation, and you should seek him out individually. Having bought over 20 cars in my life, this is the first time I have taken the time to write a review, and it is because of the professionalism of Peter that I put pen to paper. You will note that I only assigned a four-star rating to this dealership. The reason for that relates to the person they have in the finance department, who for purposes of this review, I will refer to as "Mr. Finance Man." Even though I was not financing the purchase, he made me sit through financing questions for over an hour. I made it abundantly clear that I was not interested in purchasing the so-called "dealer extras", and despite that, he proceeded, aggressively and with looks of dismay, to go through each one and then tried to make me feel as I was compromising on quality and safety by declining these extras. I told him I appreciated him trying to do his job, but I assured him I was not interested in any of these extras. When Mr. Finance Man realized my word was the reality, he became less accommodating, had no regard for my time constraints, and appeared to intentionally slow down. Then, when he presented the purchase and sale agreement, it was not close to being correct, as it had me trading in a car. I was not trading in a car. Mr. Finance Man, seemingly having encountered this many time before, said I should "just sign it anyway." When I told him that I was not in the practice of signing things that were inaccurate, he still tried to get me to sign it and when I refused for the fourth time, his irritation was palpable, commenting, "so are you going to make me print a correct one?' Becoming impatient with this incompetence, I told him he was on the verge of blowing the whole deal, which then prompted him to tear up the incorrect one and print an accurate one. Had this person been my first encounter at the dealership, I can assure you the door would not have opened fast enough to get me out of there. I would recommend that when a dealer expects employees to work with prospective customers, those employees should be required to have a minimum of people skills. Rudeness, impatience, not listening and overall arrogance should have no place in a service industry, and I feel truly sorry for anyone who actually has to deal with this person in a financing setting. I can only imagine the pain attendant to that exercise. I write this account because it also serves to highlight how highly I think of Peter E. Had I not been treated the way I was by Peter, I would not have had any hesitation of canceling the entire deal because of Mr. Finance Man. It was because I wanted to be able to recount my experience with Peter, and because of Peter's knowledge and skill, that I swallowed hard, bit my lip and refrained from dressing Mr. Finance Man down in person. It is not my intent or desire to get Mr. Finance Man in trouble, but as an owner of a business myself, I greatly appreciate knowing how my employees are doing, and if they are not serving my customers, I at least have an opportunity to improve their performance. Mr. Finance Man needs instruction on interpersonal skills and training on how to listen. Rough these edges and smooth these corners and a five star rating will be the norm.
  • Unethical practices

My husband and I drove several hours to this dealership because they had a vehicle we wanted to purchase. I put a credit card down on the car and we were working with the salesman on negotiations. After finally coming to an agreement between sale associate and sales manager a deal was agreed upon. That very same evening we were contacted to say that the car had been sold very well knowing we were buying the car! The "sales manager" laughed at my husband and said "I can do what I want, it's my business!" Never have we dealt with such an unethical and rude dealership!

I have purchased three vehicles from Wellesley Volkswagen over the years and have had them routinely serviced there as well. I have had nothing but very good, positive experiences in dealing with Sales and Service. Sales rep. Andreas, Sales Manager Mike, and Finance Mgr. Anthony have all been a pleasure to deal with. The Service department is excellent. Their treatment of me has proven that they truly value their customers and want to retain them for the longterm. They have earned my repeat business, and have not given me any reason to even consider going elsewhere.

This is my second Jetta from Colonial. I tried to find another vehicle that I liked better by visiting the 2013 New England Car Show in Boston, but the Jetta won again. I returned to Colonial Volkswagon because they have always been fair and taken good care of both me and my car. I feel part of the family.

I am now to the country and approached Colonial Volkswagen to buy a car. Right from the time I walked into the office till the time I came out buying a car, the experience was amazing. I was taken very good care, shown the right car that I needed based on my budged and the best part of since I was having a tough time getting a good loan and also going through the process of getting a drivers license, they held on to my car for a long time and during this process they helped in every way possible. I would especially like to say that Chris (my Sales Agent) and Amar (the business manager) went out of their way to make this a great experience for me and I would like to go back to them in future whenever I plan to buy a car or a friend of mine wants to... Overall, they are the best people...

We had a rather rough start, but Mark Schelfhaudt, General Manager of Colonial Volkswagen turned it around. Michael Lodowsky our Sales Consultant was very pleasant and helpful. Overall, we had a very positive experience at Colonial VW. The dealership (and the management) stands out. I will report more later with some more details.
    • Thank you for your feedback, we truly appreciate hearing from both potential clients and existing clients through the various review sites, whether it be positive or negative feedback. At Colonial Volkswagen of Westborough we are committed to providing our customers with good customer service and a quality experience. It appears this time, we may have fallen short of our commitment. As General Manager of Colonial Volkswagen, it is dissapointing to read that you have had a less than satisfactory experience with our dealership. It is through this type of forum and feedback that we can identify where we have fallen short on our commitment and do our best to correct and avoid any of issues in the future.

after dealing with many scam artist dealers i was extremely pleased after working with colonial vw on the purchase of my 2008 Mazda3. i was helped by Mike L., who was very friendly & helpful. he knew as a single mom that i was on a budget & helped me stay within that & then staid in daily contact with me as we were shipping papers back & forth to my co-signer in new york, keeping me updated on the status of everything. When I came in a couple days later to pick up the car, the process was very quick & painless. Mike even called me a couple days after I took the car off the lot to make sure everything was still going smooth. & I have already said to them that in several years when the Mazda is ready to retire, I will certainly be back :)
