by Aamir on 03/22/2024The initial cause for concern arose when I inquired about the out-the-door (OTD) price, only to be informed by the internet sales agent that I needed to physically visit the dealership to obtain this information. Upon my arrival, I was… further instructed that I must first engage in a test drive and express interest in purchasing before being provided with the OTD price, a practice that contradicts FTC regulations. During the test drive, I noted that the vehicle was a fleet vehicle and displayed a check engine light. Despite reassurances from the staff that it may have been due to a minor issue such as a fuse or chip, this raised additional concerns. While the staff remained courteous, their ability to assist me was constrained by the dealership's policies. conclusion is not visiting this dealership again.We appreciate your honest feedback about your recent visit. Hi Disa, I trust you're informed about the latest regulations from the FTC regarding CARS ( Combating Auto Retail Scams). While I understand your dealership operates under specific policies, it's imperative to note that these policies must align with FTC regulations; any deviation would constitute illegality. Referencing the FTC page: ftc.gov/carsrule Pricing and payments: A dealer must tell you the offering price, which is the full price of the vehicle. The offering price must include all costs and fees EXCEPT for required government fees, like taxes and license and registration costs. If a dealer is quoting monthly payments, they must tell you the total amount you’ll pay for the vehicle. And if they offer you a lower monthly payment, they must tell you if it will raise the total cost of the vehicle. For those who may not be acquainted with the CARS Rules, here's a summary: 1. The CARS Rule prohibits misrepresentations about material information. 2. The CARS Rule requires dealers to clearly disclose the offering price – the actual price anyone can pay to get the car, excluding only required government charges. Before they visit the dealership and throughout the transaction, consumers have the right to know the drive-off-the-lot price. If a dealer mentions optional add-ons, the dealer has to tell the consumer they can say no. And if discussing a monthly payment, the dealer has to tell the consumer the total payment. 3. The CARS Rule makes it illegal for dealers to charge consumers for add-ons that don’t provide a benefit. 4.
