Added fees to buy...no benefit to customer
by juanpablo on 07/17/2011updated 06/04/2025We were treated very courteously by the salesperson in our search for a used Hyundai, but encountered a fee of $599 as we discussed the final sale. When we asked what it was for, the salesperson laughed and said it was just pure profit for… the dealership. He also said it was non-negotiable, and against the law for them to delete. We walked away, bought a similar car elsewhere without the fee, and will never shop this dealer again.Great Experience

I was fortunate to meet Paul through an internet inquiry I made about a replacement car as I "loaned" my car to a neighbor who told me she needed to "pick up a friend and would be back… in 30 minutes" whereupon she managed to total my car before all was said and done. My former car was going to be my last car purchase as it was a 2009 Hyundai Sonata which I loved. Fortunately no one was injured in the accident but my car was a total loss. So, not only had I lost my car but I was dealing with the shock of an accident. I am a single,independent lady looking towards retirement and this was a unique situation as the purpose of having insurance is to make oneself whole again - not to necessarily "profit" from accidents. I knew I had to be cognizant of the amount of debt or investment I was willing to take on at this stage in my life. So, I began my due diligence pouring through the internet looking at vehicles that would be comparable to what I had before. Hyundai of St. Augustine has a very good, informative web site that is easy to maneuver. I began my search via the internet to find the right car to fit my needs. I met a number of salespeople through these searches. I found Paul Smathers early on. I called him about one of the cars on his company's web site and we began a dialogue. I spoke with him probably 4 times before I went to the dealership and actually met him. I had heard like many of us have, that women in the car buying market are targets for unscrupulous salesmen, and, had indeed had a very similar experience at a dealership the day before I met Paul. The day after the bad experience I found a car I was interested in on Hyundai of St. Augustine's web site. So, again, I contacted Paul and we discussed the car. Paul was very forthcoming about the specifics of the vehicle and quoted me a fair price. I live in Jacksonville and decided it would be worth the drive to take a look at this option. Once I arrived at the dealership I was greeted by several of the employees in a very friendly yet respectful manner who escorted me to Paul's desk and got me a cold drink. Paul was finishing up with a new car buyer and even brought the customer over to meet me as well. The car I was interested in was still being detailed but Paul had it brought around and, after a thorough "walk around inspection" we proceeded with a test drive. I found Paul to be attentive, informative (he knows his products), respectful, trustworthy, kind and compassionate. He is so easy to be around. He even shared some pictures with me of his wife (who is quite beautiful)and proudly told me about his daughters. The test drive went well and I decided to have him work the numbers. He did so in a very efficient way and explained very well each line item. We proceeded with the process. I then met with Eddie Brooks, who is the Finance Director with the company. I found Eddie to be so personable, knowledgeable and efficient as well. Folks, this company has a great team that they have put together and at no time was I ever pressured in the least and there was no "game playing" that you will find at other dealerships. I can honestly say this car purchase was a wonderful experience. I would highly recommend this company and its' people, and, more specifically Paul Smathers for a solid, enjoyable good value in a car new or used.2 Thumbs UP

I worked with Joey Cassata on purchasing the vehicle, and I would recommend everyone ask for him when buying a new… vehicle for themselves. He is an excellent salesman and makes accommodations to meet all of your needs. I will no doubt return to this dealership and Mr. Cassata again in the future when I purchase my next vehicle.New Car Purchase

We not only fell in love with our new Santa Fe, but learned more about my wife's Elantra than we did after owning it for four months. Shawn was great, he knew… his stuff and was fair and easy to work with. We had looked at other cars. To be honest, I wanted something else, but when other dealers were putting roadblocks in the way (if you can believe it! I am sure that they didn't think that they were but . . .) Shawn made everything happen on time and as expected right down to my name in the window of the new car when we came back for delivery.Met all our expectations, including price

by hank124 on 06/17/2012updated 06/04/2025We went on Edmunds to request a quote from the dealers in our area on a 2013 Sonata. One answered a day later with a generic greeting and no quote. The other one didn't answer. We went to the dealer in Vero Beach and saw that they had… added on an extra $4,500 to the sticker price for "availability" and "dealer prep". We went back to Edmunds and expanded our dealer search area, hit enter and within five minutes received a call from Randy Selph at St. Augustine Hyundai. I told him exactly what I wanted, agreed on a price for my trade in and proceeded from there. He had the car trucked in to his dealership from the dealer just up the way from me that didn't answer my first quote request. Randy found $1,400 in dealer discounts that were available at the time. The car that he found had some extras on it that I didn't need and he included them in the original price. The price that I was quoted by Randy originally was "out the door", tax, tags, title, everything and it never changed as the process continued. When we picked up the car, everything went smoothly. In two hours we were on our way. Trade in accepted, finance set up completed, instructional demonstration of the car's systems given (even setting up my phone and my wife's phone for the cars bluetooth), and a full tank of gas. A follow up call the next day to see if there was anything additional that we needed. Everyone at the St. Augustine dealership that we came in contact with were pleasant and helpful. It was well worth the 300 mile round trip to purchase this car and would not hesitate to recommend the St. Augustine Hyundai dealersip to anyone in Florida who is in the market for a new Hyundai.2013 Hyundai Sonota Turbo

Once we got there Terry was there to greet us and answer any questions we had. We told him which car we wanted to see and he showed it to us immediately.… Everyone we had talked to was very friendly and knowledgeable and made the whole experience entertaining and enjoyable. The buying process was nice and easy and straight to the point. The price was amazing and the car was in perfect condition. From the moment Joey Cassata professionally greeted me I felt very comfortable and wasn't pressured at all. As a matter of fact every employee I came in contact with was… friendly and enthusiastic which has not been the case in my past experiences with car dealerships. Joey was incredibly knowledgeable and thorough from the test drive to the time I took delivery of my new 2013 Sonata!! When it came time to negotiate the numbers (the part I do not look forward to!) Joey and Jimmy made it so easy and simple. The price was cut and dry, they were more than fair with my trade and when it came time to sign the paperwork with the Finance Manager Dave my payment was right where I wanted it! To top everything off the owner Andrew DiFeo came out and congratulated me on my purchase and thanked me for my business. Seriously.... I've purchased many vehicles in my life and have never been greeted by or even seen the owner! My whole experience at Hyundai of St Augustine was fantastic and I will definitely recommend them to everyone I know, not to mention how pleased I am with my new Sonata! My salesman asked me about my problem, my technician worked tirelessly until he had everything right and when further… refinement was needed he would not let me take the vehicle I got a car from the dealership and came back when everything was perfect. My car looked better than (OK as good as) the day I bought it. My wife bought her Hyundai from a different dealer (mistakes happen) but when service is needed Hyundai of St Augustine may be a little further, but they go the extra to make the customer happy. It was the 31st of July and had seen a competitors add. The dealing with OP was terrible, all the stereo typical salesman stuff, way… too pushy. I spoke to Randy at Saint Augustine and explained to him what I wanted (i picked the car online from their inventory). I gave him my trade in information. There were good incentives that expired on the same day. I told him if he cam back with a good deal I would take the car today. He called back/emailed me his offer in 30 minutes. I took the offer, and I was surprised at the dealership that NOTHING had changed. I had come in at 7pm and was out the door with a new car at 8:15. Randy was really helpful and was bending over backwards to make sure he explained all about the car and the dealership. He told me bout the car not coming with a spare and the other pros and cons. I appreciate the fact the he did not try to hide anything and everything waiting for me when I got to the dealership. The finance guy (Joey) had the typical ad on speech. I told him i have not had a car longer then 3 years and have never needed warranty work or extended services. He was good at accepting that and did not do the hard sell. He said He had to offer it and understood I was not interested. All in all a very good experience. BTW before I got to the dealer OP had their sales manager call me. I told him the deal i was offered by Saint Augustine and said they would beat it by $100. I told him even if he beat it by $500 i was not interested in dealing with them!Knowledgable Sales Consultants

I went up to Hyundai of St. Augustine to test drive a Genesis and the new 2013 Santa Fe Sport. I was… working through USAA car buying service and Kyle S.. However, Kyle was out sick the day I wanted to visit the dealership. SHAWN H. stepped in and had the vehicles prepped and ready to go on my arrival. I do a lot of research before visiting a dealership. Usually, I know more about a product than the typical salesman. And, after a week of looking at all the local lots I assumed the worst before my visit. Boy, was I pleasantly surprised. Shawn knew it all. He was waiting for me when I arrived with both models ready to test drive. He was very helpful in zeroing in on a car that my wife would want to seriously consider. And, after learning I was using USAA buying service, informed me of an additional discount on the Genesis. He sorted through my myriad "requirements" and found two vehicles my wife will love. Now, just to get her to pick one :)
