The latest 2022 Nissan Rogue is the best version of itself yet. It's practical, fuel-efficient and big on standard features and driver aids. It's a solid all-rounder. But compared to other small SUVs, the Rogue has more cabin noise, a less refined ride and an increasingly dated infotainment system.

The 2022 Nissan Rogue is a small SUV that is the company's top-selling vehicle. It was redesigned last year, and we liked the added comfort, storage space and available technology so much that we moved near the top of our small SUV rankings. Now for its sophomore year, this latest-generation Rogue receives a new engine that's more powerful and promises improved fuel economy.

This new 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine packs 201 horsepower and 225 lb-ft of torque — a boost of 20 hp and 44 lb-ft over the previous non-turbo 2.5-liter four-cylinder. It also comes with Nissan's variable compression ratio design feature. As seen on the Altima sedan, it can change its compression ratio in real time, enabling it to enhance fuel efficiency or engine power, depending on conditions and driver demand.
The 2022 Rogue definitely delivers on the fuel economy front, with the base front-wheel-drive model getting EPA-estimated 33 mpg combined, a 3 mpg leap over the 2021 model. The engine is also paired to a new continuously variable automatic transmission, with wider gear ratio coverage and other updates that Nissan says contribute to better mpg and responsiveness.
We're glad Nissan has introduced a new engine for the Rogue because the old one felt underpowered. In our brief drive of the 2022 Rogue, the added power and torque — Nissan says it has the most of any standard gas engine in its class — imparted confidence. You'll have no problem passing when you're out running errands or merging on the highway or essentially doing the type of driving that you're expecting to do if you’re on the hunt for a spacious, comfortable small SUV.
The Rogue's fresh style and generous amount of features help it stand out from its rivals, and the new engine's extra oomph only strengthens the offering for 2022. On the feature front, every Rogue has an impressive number of standard driver assist features, such as forward collision mitigation and blind-spot monitoring, as well as entertainment technology including Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration. On the top Platinum trim you'll find quilted leather seats and a head-up display. Still, the Rogue faces top-tier contenders including the Honda CR-V and the Mazda CX-5. Once we're able to do a full test and evaluation, we'll see if it moves up further in our rankings.

We drove the 2022 Nissan Rogue on our test track and on real roads. Our Edmunds team conducts rigorous independent vehicle testing, driving 500,000 miles a year.
Performance
7/10
How does the Rogue drive? The turbocharged three-cylinder engine is surprisingly punchy. It makes plenty of power for passing and merging. It also delivers a respectably quick sprint from 0 to 60 mph in a little more than 8 seconds. Unfortunately, in routine driving the engine and transmission don't always respond smoothly when you press on the accelerator. The powertrain can feel slow to respond at first, and then lurchy and surging soon after.
Around corners, the Rogue is capable and composed but not particularly fun. The steering doesn't give you much feel for the road. There's also a noticeable dead spot in the steering when you're driving straight, especially at city speeds, so it's easy to drift if you're not going fast enough to use the Rogue's lane centering system.

Comfort
7.5/10
How comfortable is the Rogue? The Rogue is a comfortable SUV in most ways. The seats are soft and feel like they mold to your body, which is great on long drives. The front seats' only notable weakness is the slightly forward placement of headrests that some taller drivers might find uncomfortable. The Rogue also has available triple-zone climate control, which is a rare feature among small SUVs.
Compared to top competitors, the Rogue's ride feels busier and less refined on less than smooth roads. We felt a lot of the rough edges of road imperfections, and the Rogue had more side-to-side motions over uneven pavement than we'd expect.

Interior
8/10
How’s the interior? Getting into the Rogue is easy thanks to lightweight doors and big openings. The cabin is airy, making the Rogue seem like a larger vehicle than it actually is. The tall, wide windows provide an expansive view out and contribute to the sense of space. The thick rear roof pillars block your rearward view slightly, but several driver aids are present to help eliminate blind spots.
The interior layout is pleasant and cleanly designed overall, but taller drivers may push the limits of the driving position's adjustability, and it has less rear legroom than some rivals.
The interior layout is pleasant and cleanly designed overall, but taller drivers may push the limits of the driving position's adjustability, and it has less rear legroom than some rivals.
Technology
8/10
How’s the tech? The Rogue offers a great set of standard infotainment features and driver aids. In higher trims you get a big touchscreen, a digital gauge cluster and a head-up display, along with wireless connectivity for Apple CarPlay phone integration. The technology is mostly easy to use, but the menus and commands for the digital gauge cluster have a bit of a learning curve. Also, the voice controls are rigid and occasionally get confused.
The driver aids work well in most situations, although they have some trouble in stop-and-go traffic, and the Rogue offers both lane centering and rear automatic braking on top of the usual suite of features.

Storage
9/10
How’s the storage? The Rogue is a standout small SUV for cargo. Its overall cargo volume is only marginally smaller than class leaders, and in-cabin storage options are top-notch. Higher trims offer a set of easily reconfigurable floor panels — they can create a flat load bed or partitions or be lowered to open up a bit of extra space. Inside the cabin you'll find several accommodating trays up front and spots for front and rear passengers to stash drinks and small items.
Parents should appreciate the easy-to-access LATCH points, and the wide-opening rear doors that make installing car seats — and lifting kids in and out — much less of a hassle.

Fuel Economy
8.5/10
How’s the fuel economy? The front-wheel-drive Rogue gets an EPA-estimated 33 mpg combined for city/highway driving, and models with all-wheel drive should get 31 mpg. That's better than average for a non-hybrid small SUV. We also ran our test Rogue with AWD on our standardized real-world evaluation route. It posted a slightly disappointing 28.5 mpg, but overall it is still a small SUV that can help you save on gas.
Value
7.5/10
Is the Rogue a good value? The Nissan Rogue presents a good value in its lower trim levels. Its extensive list of standard tech features and driver aids, along with an economical gasoline engine, make for a compelling proposition against similarly priced models. But higher-level trims of the Rogue lack the substance to compete. Other rival SUVs feel more luxurious, have more features and flashier technology, are more enjoyable to drive, or offer hybrid variants with better economy.
Nissan's warranty coverage is typical for this class. The standard bumper-to-bumper warranty is good for three years/36,000 miles, as is roadside coverage. The powertrain is warrantied for five years/60,000 miles.

Wildcard
7.5/10
The Rogue makes a great first impression, with sharper exterior design and a more modern and upscale-looking interior. Unfortunately, the Rogue's overall refinement, build quality and road manners don't live up to that first impression, especially in the high-cost Platinum trim that we tested.
2022 Nissan Rogue trim level differences
The 2022 Nissan Rogue is a five-passenger small SUV sold in four trim levels: S, SV, SL and Platinum. All are powered by a 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine (201 horsepower, 225 lb-ft of torque) mated to a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). Front-wheel drive is standard across the board, and all-wheel drive is available on all trims.
Which Rogue trim does Edmunds recommend?
The SV is the standout of the Rogue lineup. It doesn't cost much more than the base Rogue and adds some desirable extras such as adaptive cruise control, dual-zone climate control, and USB ports for rear passengers.

2022 Nissan Rogue SV 4dr SUV (1.5L 3cyl Turbo CVT)
This vehicle is better than I expected based on the review I read here at Edmunds. I was looking for a vehicle that had comfortable seating, was quiet at freeway speeds, gets good gas mileage and had a cargo area with useful dimensions - tall enough and long enough to enable me to carry bikes standing up (with the bike's front wheel removed).Over about a year, I either rented or test … drove a Mazda CX-5, Toyota RAV4, Toyota Venza, Hyundai Santa Fe, Kia Sportage, Kia Sorento, Ford Escape, Ford Edge, Volkswagen Tiguan, Subaru Forester and BMW X-3.
Edmunds' review says "Elevated wind and road noise at highway speeds" so I skipped looking at this vehicle until the end and was surprised to find it to be among the quietest I'd driven. It's much quieter than the highly praised CX-5 and equally quiet to the Venza. The seats are very comfortable. Much better than the highly praised Kia / Hyundai products. Edmunds review says, "Smaller back seat". This is wrong. Maybe they mistakenly reviewed the smaller Nissan Rogue Sport instead?
The Rogue is the only vehicle I found with a cargo area tall enough for me to carry bikes inside. All of the other vehicles have cargo area heights that are too short (less than 2.5 ft.). This is also the only vehicle that has a flat cargo area once the rear seats are folded. You could throw a mattress in there and sleep in there.
The Rogue has the best gas mileage of any non-hybrid SUV I looked at and its gas mileage is near that of the more expensive hybrid SUVs (I'm looking at you RAV4 hybrid). Nissan achieves this with a three cylinder engine that varies its compression ratio based on throttle inputs. Despite its efficiency, this engine feels very powerful and the vehicle accelerates rapidly when asked. This engine is coupled to a CVT that is tuned to have the feel of a conventional automatic.
Better Than Expected

2022 Nissan Rogue SL 4dr SUV AWD (1.5L 3cyl Turbo CVT)
So… the Rogue was a step down from my Murano which was bigger and plusher. I just didn’t care for the Rav4 or CRV so I stuck with Nissan by default.
I have to say I am pleasantly surprised by the Rogue. It is comfortable, useful and pretty fun to drive. It provides a solid 95% of the utility I was getting out of my much larger Murano, Outback or Ford Edge in a much smaller, more fuel … efficient package. The tech features are solidly competitive if not a little easier to use than the other cars I’ve owned.
The only negatives are: a little turbo lag (but totally bearable so far) and oddly the AC could be a little stronger.
I’ll update if anything major changes but so far, I’m impressed!

2022 Nissan Rogue SV 4dr SUV AWD (1.5L 3cyl Turbo CVT)
I have been driving Nissan’s for the last 15 years. 2007 Murano, 2014 Rogue, and now a 2022 Rogue. All of them AWD as the Cleveland winters and my outside sales job requiring 20k miles per year will always have me needing AWD. I have only had my ‘22 Rogue for 4 weeks/1200 miles so far and I already LOVE it. The “turbo lag” takes a little getting used to but I enjoy how this car makes … power. Gas mileage is impressive and the acceleration from a 3 cylinder for such a large vehicle is a technology marvel. All the new technology is amazing! Like anything new it takes some getting used to, but it’s all great. I really like the Apple car play. The adaptive cruise control and Pro Pilot assist are great on the freeway. I have always used my cruise control as a speed control and ALWAYS have it on except when I’m backing out of my driveway. I shut the Pro Pilot off except when on the freeway as it’s a little much for 35-45 mph roads, but it’s one easy button and the car remembers your setting even after shutting off and re-starting. The adaptive cruise control is a little aggressive when breaking if someone pulls out in front of you or traffic is stopped, like previous cruise controls simply pressing the cancel button and then resume is super easy. The lane keep assist takes some adjustment time as you don’t realize how often you are cheating your lane in situations where no other cars are around (passing a semi on the freeway I tend to hug the white line on the left, or hugging the double yellow lines to straighten out a curve on a 2-way road). Speaking of curves, the paddle shifters are way fun and the car has a great sound when revs are in the power-band. I have tried not to use the paddle shifters too much for the first 1000 miles, but I can already see how much fun this feature and the 8 gears will be on back country roads after fully broken in. Reminds me of my motorcycle days. As usual Nissan does not disappoint and I hope to enjoy the same reliability Nissan has always provided me with.

After 9 months of ownership my 22Rogue SV has been trouble free. I've adjusted to the sudden surge on initial acceleration and overall I made a wise decision with my purchase and would definitely buy another 🇺🇸💯🙏🏽
