As a luxury hatchback, the 2023 Audi A7 is unusual. Yet it's a terrifically impressive machine, with a supple interior, strong engine and surprisingly sporty handling. There aren't many faults. However, its touchscreen can be distracting to use, so be sure to check it out before buying.

Overview

The 2023 Audi A7 is a sleek and stylish luxury sedan that offers more practicality than the average luxury car. It's one of Edmunds' favorite luxury cars on sale today, four-door or otherwise. It's comfortable, well appointed and more practical than most four-doors, including some in Audi's own stable. While the A7 is fundamentally an A6 sedan with a more eye-catching profile, that sloping roofline hides a massive hatch.

Feature changes for 2023 are minor. Adaptive cruise control is now available on the base Premium model, and Audi has combined two separate packages — the Black Optic and S Line packages — into one. Unfortunately, Audi has discontinued the plug-in hybrid model from the A7 lineup. We're disappointed because the plug-in offered higher fuel economy than the regular A7 and was a differentiating feature in this class.
Overall we recommend the A7 if you're looking for a luxury sedan with lots of cargo space, a luxurious interior and pleasing performance. Other alternatives include the Mercedes-Benz CLS and BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe, as both have a similar, stylish ethos. Other midsize luxury sedans include the Mercedes E-Class, BMW 5 Series, Volvo S90 and Genesis G80. Check out our Expert Rating below for everything you need to know about the A7.

Great
8.1
out of 10
We drove the 2023 Audi A7 on our test track and on real roads. Our Edmunds team conducts rigorous independent vehicle testing, driving 500,000 miles a year.
Performance
8.5/10
How does the A7 drive? Acceleration is strong. Our test A7 logged the 0-60 sprint in just 4.7 seconds. It also posted short emergency-stopping distances, though much of the credit went to our test car's optional summer performance tires. Fitted with the optional S Line sport package, the A7 handles surprisingly well. But there's quite a difference in steering feel across the driving modes — Comfort is almost too light, while Dynamic tends to feel needlessly heavy in some situations.
The power delivery when leaving a stop can be a little jerky, which is somewhat unrefined for a car of this class. Sport mode helps smooth out the delivery a bit and doesn't hang onto gears unnecessarily long. Upshifts are nearly imperceptible no matter which gear you're in or how much throttle you're giving it.

Comfort
8/10
How comfortable is the A7? The A7 is a comfortable cruiser offering a smooth ride over a variety of surfaces. The base seats feel great but don't have as many adjustments as those in rivals. Massaging seats with more customization are available, but they are expensive. The climate control system works great.
While the engine is barely audible at highway speeds, there's more wind and road noise than we'd expect for this class. Ambient noises from outside the car seep in readily too. None of it is terribly distracting, however, and keeping the radio at even a low level will drown it all out. You'll always feel the aforementioned driveline shocks in first gear.

Interior
7.5/10
How’s the interior? The swoopy roofline suggests rear visibility will suffer, but the A7 actually has excellent sight lines all around. Alas, the slinky profile hampers rear headroom and can make it tricky to get in and out. It's not the most spacious midsize car, so if you sit in the rear behind a tall person, you'll need to scrunch and rotate your body 90 degrees before exiting.
Audi's latest dual-panel touchscreen is attractive but difficult to use. Navigating the menus requires far too much driver attention and presents a steep learning curve. There are many menus and selecting items requires a firm, deliberate press when in haptic mode. A few functions can be accessed by drawing on the lower screen, but you have to navigate to those input screens first.

Technology
9/10
How’s the tech? The A7 cabin is an oasis for tech lovers. The instrument panel and touchscreen displays are crisp, while the sound system is so good you might swear off talk radio forever. The voice command system works great, which is fortunate due to how confounding the touchscreen interface is.
Our test A7 was equipped with four USB ports — two under the front armrest and two behind the center console for rear passengers. There was also a wireless charging pad under the front armrest. Wireless Apple CarPlay is a great feature, and the system reacts quickly to user inputs.
The A7's driver aids are generally very good. The adaptive cruise control operates smoothly. Lane keeping is subtle and deals with gentle corners well, but it's disconcertingly flummoxed by tighter corners. Rear cross-traffic braking assist is too sensitive.

Storage
7.5/10
How’s the storage? The hatchback design gives the A7 more cargo room and space flexibility than the A6 sedan and other competing four-doors. Since the A7 is a hatchback, the cargo area has a flat, wide space with side pockets, tie-down rings and LED strips. There's nowhere to stow the cargo cover if you don't want it, but at least it's short. The 40/20/40-split rear seat folds almost flat and doesn't require the front seats be moved forward.
Like the Audi A6, there aren't many places to store things inside, so drivers should probably declutter before settling in. Easily accessible car seat anchors aid in fitting a safety seat.

Fuel Economy
9/10
How’s the fuel economy? The EPA estimates the A7 earns 24 mpg in combined driving (21 city/30 highway). These numbers are slightly higher than the class average — and great for an engine with this much power. Our test car averaged 27.5 mpg over our 115-mile mixed-driving evaluation route, indicating that the EPA's estimates are achievable.
Value
7.5/10
Is the A7 a good value? The quality of materials and construction is excellent, though the blinding chrome trim and a rattling speaker in our test car diminished the primo luxury vibe. Still, the A7 can be expensive, and you can get more cargo room from the Q8 SUV for less money. Warranty coverage for a luxury automaker is average.
Wildcard
9/10
There aren't many midsize luxury hatchbacks, and Audi went out of its way to make this car feel special. The S Line package and sticky tires endow this tech-heavy people mover with performance chops, and the turbo V6 is more powerful than you might think.
For better or worse, the A7 greatly differentiates itself from the A6 it's based on. Its rear hatch allows for more cargo room at the expense of rear headroom. The styling makes it look a bit sleeker too. Otherwise, it has the same high-tech interior and spirited dynamics we love in the A6.

2023 Audi A7 trim level differences
The 2023 Audi A7 is a four-door sedan with seating for up to five. The A7 is available in three trims: Premium, Premium Plus and Prestige. The standard engine is a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 (335 horsepower, 369 lb-ft of torque) called the 55 TFSI. Last year's plug-in hybrid model was dropped from the lineup for 2023. All models come with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. The sportier Audi S7 and RS 7 are reviewed separately on Edmunds. Keep reading for our full breakdown of the A7's standard features and option packages.
Which A7 trim does Edmunds recommend?
As with last year's A7, we suggest going with the midlevel Premium Plus trim. It builds off the base Premium trim with a few extra niceties, including the optional Convenience package as standard equipment.

2019 Audi A7 3.0 TFSI Premium Plus quattro 4dr Sedan AWD (3.0L 6cyl Turbo gas/electric hybrid 7AM)
I purchased the 2019 A7 premium plus. In the four months since ownership, the vehicle had a few issues. Upon entering the highway from a stop, the vehicle rolled backwards and the rear view camera turned on. On another occasion, the vehicle braked unexpectedly. There were also warning lights and error messages that would come on, but when you restart the vehicle, the messages would … go away. The A7 is a beautiful vehicle, but needs some updates to correct the technical problems.

2021 Audi A7 Prestige 4dr Sedan AWD w/55 TFSI e (2.0L 4cyl Turbo gas/electric plug-in hybrid 7AM)
BRAND NEW 2021 A7e became COMPLETELY NON-OPERATIONAL after 2+ weeks of ownership and just over 800 miles on it. It had to be towed to a dealership and wait weeks for a part to come in from Germany. Imagine the excitement and joy of owning a new car like this to the wondering about Audi's build quality and reliability on this car for the rest of my ownership period….big time downer, … time suck, frustration and inconvenience coupled with Audi Customer "Care" that was ANYTHING BUT CARING. Where is the empathy for the people that pay $ 87k for a vehicle that completely fails right after you buy it and that you dreamed of owning. Instead a sincere apology they use a lot of hollow words, but don't back them up by standing by their cars and doing the right thing. They felt repairing it under it's standard warranty a reasonable remedy. That would be acceptable if something happened a year or two into my ownership, not 2 weeks!?!?!? Thankfully, I had a dealer that was sympathetic and bought back the vehicle. You probably won't be so lucky and Audi will not help you whatsoever. Yes, I'm angry, but that is not the purpose of this posting. I am just hoping to spare others of what I went through with Audi, first with the horrible build quality and then with no one at Audi caring or thinking this was horrible and taking responsibility. Please, before buying an Audi, do yourself a favor and research them (and all of the VW brands, since that is who they are owned by). Audi of America has an F grade from the Better Business Bureau and don't forget VW had to pay millions of dollars in settlements for cheating on emissions standards results. Yes, their cars look beautiful and can be fun to drive (when they work), but unless you are a glutton for punishment, don't think it won't happen to you. I NEVER thought in my wildest dreams something like this would happen and if it did I was confident a reputable company would assist me. Nothing could be further from the truth! IF only this was a bad dream. Also, you should be aware the issue was with a major hybrid component….this from a coming who is marketing about how great their electric cars are….please don't be a victim of their smoke and mirrors marketing. I don't wish what they put me through on my worst enemy.

2020 Audi A7 Premium Plus 4dr Sedan AWD w/55 TFSI (3.0L 6cyl Turbo gas/electric mild hybrid 7AM)
I have driven SUVs for 15 years and decided to give a sedan a try. Once I drove the A7 there was no way I was buying anything else. This is the smoothest driving car I have ever driven . The tech is state of the art. The only problem I had was finding one since they are in such demand.
The A7 is the BEST CAR ON THE ROAD

2021 Audi A7 Prestige 4dr Sedan AWD w/55 TFSI (3.0L 6cyl Turbo gas/electric mild hybrid 7AM)
Nothing on the road compares to the A7. It is unique. Drives like a GT, rides on rails, beautifully crafted sedan, and tremendous hatchback storage options. The gas mileage is amazing at 30 true mpg highway. This is my 3RD A7 and i will never own another car or suv. The Bang & Olufsen sound is without competition. The A7 is marvelous to drive, practical with the hatchback, and a head … turner all in one. AT IT'S HEART IT IS A MULTI-DIMENSIONAL GT. After 6 months the only thing i would change are the tires. The low profile Bridgestone Turanza's look great and ride great the downside is like all low profile tires they are more prone to damage at the slightest touch of a curb and more likely to need replacement for the smallest nail incursion. Not a big deal but if you acquire and A7 sport line - see if you can order or pick it up with a tire swap to something that is not low profile. (it's a nit because the car is LIKE NO OTHER ON THE ROAD - STRIKING LOOKS, INCREDIBLE INTERIOR and is MUCH EASIER TO ORDER THAN IT'S PRICIER SISTER THE PANAMERA. it is simply the best car and alone in it's class without competition.
We have a limited number of reviews for the 2023 Audi A7, so we've included reviews for other years of the A7 since its last redesign.
