I got my 2002 Toyota Avalon XL in 2014. It had one previous owner and 87,500 miles. Due to being a college student and being my first car, I only did reactive maintenance and oil changes as needed for the first 3 years. Once I got a job, I was able to invest more money into the car to give it the suggested scheduled maintenance. I have not had any major issues arise. The most expense repairs were replacing the timing belt (which I did at 149,800 miles) and misfiring cylinders. I was looking for reviews on timing belt replacement and didn't see to many that talked about when they got theirs replaced. The Scheduled Maintenance Guide says to get the timing belt replaced at 90,000 so I was just under 60,000 miles overdue. The shop said that my timing belt did have some minor cracking but nothing major. After reading the reviews on here and seeing that this car can make it to 200,000 miles and even 250,000 miles easily if the scheduled maintenance is followed, I had decided to keep mine and invest to make it last that long. It's honestly a great car if you don't mind the look and old tech. Edit: 7-14-2019 Still running great. Just hit 160,000 miles. Replaced the audio console with a touchscreen and it is great! Edit 1-26-2021 Still doing good! At about 189,000 miles. Routine and suggested maintenance from the repair shop I take it to keeps it running well. No failures or major replacements. Only the normal wear and tear. Edit 2022-1-29: Still going strong. 210k miles Edit 2023-2-4: 232k miles and still kicking Edit 2023-8-9: 241k miles, still rolling Edit 2024-3-12: 252k miles, spent about $3,000 in maintenance items that happened to line up but still going strong.

Wonderful car to drive and transport passengers. Door handle quality is poor with pealing chrome. When rear left window is down about 4 inches I get a noise of flapping. I will buy another one but test drive with windows slightly down in back as the noise of flapping is very irritating. The only other problem I have had is the rear bumper paint is very fragile. It scrapes off with minor friction.

doesn't break often, costly when it does.

This vehicle gets very good gas mileage. It has very good, get up and go power. With 80,000 miles, we have had no major mechanical incidents. We love the roomy trunk space, as well as the full size spare tire. The one negative: the trunk lid sounds like a piece of tin when one shuts it giving a sense of cheapness. Otherwise, an excellent purchase. Resale value is not yet known but we will know soon.

Overpriced XLS

comfortable ride, good acceleration, good amenities. However, transaxle has whine between 30 and 40 mph; wind noise around outside mirrors. Shouldn't have these problems with top of line Toyota and for the price.
